HDR Wallpaper Creation Questions

  • Aiming for 1-2min seamless loop that I'll kick out of Premiere Pro, HDR, Rec 2100 PQ, 4K.
  • Recording video game footage ambience. e.g. a sunset in Red Dead 2, a morning in GTAV, nighttime in LA Noire, etc. Static camera shots, no movement. Using OBS, locked 60fps recording.
  • Should I publish 60fps or 30fps?
  • I'm on the beta so I can use HDR. Will these look bad/weird on the default public version?
  • Should I push it as close to the 2GB limit so quality is maintained, or I can make the loop longer? OR should I aim for 1-2min, make it seamless, and then try and get it as small as I can without too much quality loss?

Thank you for any information, I really appreciate it.

Green artifacts when recording Kingdom Come Deliverance II

Image here. Not seeing this while recording, only appears baked into the HEVC mp4 after recording. HDR has to be on, as I'm recording for YouTube and SDR compresses things too much. Not seeing this in any other game.

  • 14900K + 5090. DLSS4 Transformer (also tried this off/native/noupscaling, same problem).
  • Happens exclusively when really dark.
  • ChatGPT was suggesting something about things getting true black causing issues?
  • Limited color, Rec 2100 PQ, been doing an HDR pipeline for awhile.

Thank you for any info.

Do HDR videos on YouTube EVENTUALLY convert? Or have you had videos not convert to HDR after months?

Trying to figure out the balance of waiting vs. reupload.

Youtube → Wallpaper?

Of course there is via Wallpaper Engine. But, asking a theoretical question, specifically here, because I figure this community is the most tapped in to animated desktops more than any other.

So: would YouTube ever natively implement a "Use This Video as Desktop" feature? Of course they would want it online, probably for premium members only, you pay for all the bandwidth, yada yada.....

I guess why I'm asking: 4K60HDR became important to me for 1hr videos due to compression and artifacting. Wallpaper Engine limits to 2gb per upload, and a 1hr 4K60 compressed SDR video via ffmpeg left a lot to be desired.

Which, the other elephant in the room: the second my computer chugs whatsoever, I quit Wallpaper Engine. Now, I imagine a 4K60 youtube video being streamed as my desktop.......yeah, okay, I'm in fantasy land.

Further context for asking: I like to record 24 hour day night cycles in video games, which are typically 48-60min realtime. This.....hasn't been great for a desktop wallpaper, but I want it to be so badly. And, selfishly: I want to share them, but the 2gb limit on Wallpaper Engine, or Wallper.app's lack of community is just kinda.....I don't know, I stick to Youtube.

Thanks for any info, I really appreciate it.

3min 4K60HDR achieved HDR on YouTube in 2 days. 1hr 4K60 still not HDR by day 4

ffprobe confirmed HDR. How long do I wait for HDR? Do others experience this? It seems video duration impacts conversion time. i.e. I thought it was just like an HDR queue time waiting to be converted and video length was negligible on how fast it would convert.

Will Loop Ever Be Seamless?

Looping any seamlessly looped video always has a gap/skip/hiccup. Is this a YouTube issue, or a browser issue?

4K60 or 4K30? Seamless 1hr Red Dead

  1. Record 4K60 near uncompressed mp4 of Red Dead Redemption PC max settings footage with OBS. Focus capturing a 24hr day/night cycle.
  2. In Premiere, make exactly 1hr with a 4 second crossfade so as to make seamless. Export 4K60 80mbps for youtube
  3. For WallpaperEngine, take said seamless video:
    • I chatgpt, "static shot, must be as close to 2GB but under as possible, 4k60, 320kbps audio. plz give me the ffmpeg that's appropriate." Bitrate ends up being around 4mbps, which sucks for 4K, I know. Biggest thing that suffers: little dust and dirt particles around the ground. You can just really see the compression.
  • I think I need to bail on sound. No one will care about the sound, and it buys me a few MB back.
  • Am I being too precious about publishing for WallpaperEngine? I couldn't find cheap hosting, but WallpaperEngine has 2gb video limit.
  • 4K30? Hesitant on 1440p. I've started back on this endeavor mainly for 4K.
  • Do I bail on 24hr day night cycle and focus instead on daytime/nighttime/morning loops? Then I can have a shorter duration with higher bitrate each.

Thank you for any feedback. Learning and gauging what people look for in desirable wallpapers as of 2026.

Cook and Becker added Marathon artwork prints

I've ordered from them before, love their stuff. Please let me know if feels too much like advertising a product - if so, I'll remove post. I just wanted to share as there's limited quantities and the things I've ordered from them have been very high quality/some of my favorite things I own. (Search Cook and Becker, you'll find it, I don't want to post the link, I imagine that's a no-no.)
