To the union haters…

Without the unions, you’d have no free healthcare.

Without the unions, you’d have no retro pay coming.

Without the unions, you’d be making less than you already are.

Without the unions, you’d be working as many hours as your principal wants you to.

Without the unions, the district would spend the money that you deserve on more outside contracts.

Are they perfect? No.

Are they always right? No.

Are they valuable and essential for public employees like us? Yes.

Don’t forget it.

Anyone else think Hurt’s chorus sounds suspiciously similar to Hurt by 1-800-PAIN?

Is this on purpose or?

I really like the song but then realized the chorus is identical to a smaller hyperpop group.

Expose for the highlights or the shadows?

Hey all, I come from the digital cinematography world as well as 35mm with rangefinders, and I wanted your input on what you prioritize for exposures.

In digital I usually expose for the highlights, unless the scene calls for something else, and let my shadows fall off. Usually.

I read for film it’s better to expose for the shadows, as there’s more latitude on the highlight recovery with film.

Is this a good rule of thumb or does it not matter/depend on the shot?

Car Battery Diagnosis (Toyota Corolla Hatchback 2020)

Hey all - have a Corolla Hatchback 2020 with some weird battery issues. Wondering how you’d assess. Taking to shop tomorrow but insight is appreciated.

First 4 years of ownership, weird battery drain due to electronics not being updated - official TSB was sent out and this fixed it.

This past week, I was out of town for 9 days and my car sat in the sun in a heatwave (90+ daily) and was in the sun for 10 hours a day. In my parking lot at home. Battery is 23 months old, been driving minimally this summer.

Started once, but heard machine gun sound on start. Noted - but I did a dumbass thing and drove to the gas station and back, 2 minutes, starting twice. No time for alternator to recharge.

Next day, car won’t start at all. Lights come on but just get the little machine gun stutter and nothing. Call AAA and they jump it no problem - then drive for an hour to let alternator charge.

So, thankfully the jump helped the battery and I drove for an hour no problem, but now today the car won’t start again. Is it likely a dead battery from sitting for so long in the sun? I have a warranty on it from Toyota and hope that’s the case so they can just swap it.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Never any issues before this that led me to believe alternator wasn’t charging normally.

Can the unions block furlough days?

Anyone who has experienced these, how’s it work? Seems kinda silly we’d fight for a raise just to go unpaid for a week…can UTLA or SEIU say no?

When did you hit certain maintenance milestones?

Finally paid my Corolla off and looking at long term care for her.

I’ve done oil changes regularly but am coming up on long term maintenance like brakes and fluids around 72k miles.

How much mileage did you get from your factory brakes? When did you notice them going?

How about fluids and any other issues?

Math on ESY hours doesn’t add up…

So, I saw folks saying ESY pay for teachers is 3.5 hours a day. Ok, they don’t want to pay for lunch, whatever.

But - the math isn’t mathing. My hours are 8:20 - 12:30. That’s 4 hours 10 minutes. Subtract the 20 minute lunch, it’s 3 hours 50 minutes. That’s basically 20 minutes a day that you’re not being paid for. Which adds up to roughly 1.5 hours a week.

How is this allowed? Is this a UTLA thing? If you’re paid hourly you can’t just be unpaid without reason. Am I missing something?

Low speed grinding noise mostly gone after hard stops, anything else I should do? (2020 Corolla Hatchback, 75k)

Some context: I’m in SoCal, the car sits parked outside on the street for a day or two at a time, I’m a pretty light braker, and the noise started right after a car wash. Dealer serviced every 10k and they’ve never flagged the brakes.

Someone suggested it might just be surface rust from the car sitting wet, so I did a hard stop from about 30 in an empty lot and the noise basically disappeared after that. But prior to the hard stop, it’s been there lingering when I do a slow brake around 10 miles per hour or less only. There’s still a tiny bit on the passenger side but it keeps fading the more I drive.

I pulled up photos through the wheel spokes and the rotor face looks smooth and shiny, no grooves. There’s a rust ridge on the outer edge but I know that part never touches the pads.

My questions: does this sound like anything other than rust? Is there anything else I should be doing besides driving it more? And at 75k on original pads should I just get them measured at my next oil change or is this worth a dedicated inspection?

Trying to not spend too much on repairs right now and want to know how to treat this!

Breaking question

Hey all. So I took my 2020 Corolla through a car wash recently and ever since I’ve noticed this weird grinding noise when braking at low speeds. It’s not super loud or anything, and honestly it seems like it’s been slightly fading the more I drive, but it’s still there sometimes.

Car has been totally fine otherwise, no change in braking performance that I can tell. Is this just surface rust on the rotors from the water or should I actually be worried? Anyone dealt with this before?

Been a couple weeks now. Can’t hear it unless car is dead quiet. 73,000 miles.

LAUSD teachers questions

Hello from the 2nd largest school district in the country…

Considering a move to NYC. How’s the hiring situation for SPED teachers right now? And anyone know the process for transferring a CA license to NY?

Thanks!

Anyone only ever get symptoms after illness?

I know we aren’t doctors and I should direct medical advice to them. But, I’ve been dealing with asthma symptoms post illness for the past few years and working with doctors and just want a second opinion from the community.

After an illness passes without fail I always have lung irritation such as wheezing, burning, persistent cough, & difficulty breathing. I’ve been prescribed inhalers to help, and it does, but not entirely. I’m wondering if this is something others have experienced and what has worked for them. I’ve been given prednisone to control a flare up but I hate the side effects and this happens 2-3 times a year at least and I don’t want to take it that much.

So, I started last summer when game launched, put in about 10 hours and built a bike and moved on with my life. Well, I want to come back after all the updates! But my bike and base are gone and I feel like I forgot how to do all that. Any help?
