MAMA Pickups - My Woeful Experience

I bought two pickups for my PRS Slimline hollowbody from an Italian pickup company, MAMA. A little over two years after I purchased them, the lead pickup simply died. I contacted the company, and they had me go through a variety of tests, which my guitar tech performed (I made a video of it and sent it to them.). The pickup had not been tampered with, the guitar had not been abused in any way—it simply failed. In my 50 years of playing and teaching, I've never had a pickup die on me.

They told me to send the pickup back to Italy, which I did. The pickup was not covered under warranty, and I ended up paying €60 in import taxes, plus shipping back to the United States. What surprised me most was that they would not stand behind the pickup.

Then, within about 7 months, the other pickup died. I contacted them numerous times, both by email and through Facebook Messenger, which was how I had communicated with them previously. I received absolutely no response. I could even see that my messages had been marked as "read." After waiting and waiting, I finally decided, "F\*ck it. I'm done with these clowns." If you know anything about pickups, you know that the winding process is a delicate one. I can't say with certainty what caused these failures, but having both pickups fail within a relatively short period certainly made me question the consistency of their manufacturing process.

The bigger issue for me, however, was the customer service. Having to pay to deal with the first failure was bad enough. Being completely ignored when the second pickup failed was bullshit.Btw, something that I'm remembering now was that when the first pick up failed the guy (so I can only presume as the owner) ask me to send him a picture of the pick up itself. He asked me if I had gone into the pick up because those solder joints didn't look familiar. Like I'm gonna go into the fkn PU!? Those were indeed the exact solder joints that they put on the pick up.

I know a large number of professional players at the highest levels, as well as countless amateur musicians, and I've taught thousands of students throughout my career, and I've literally never encountered, nor heard of one PU failure much less 2 from the same company.

Looking back, choosing a pickup company outside the country where I live was a mistake—and an even bigger mistake was continuing to deal with a company that treated a customer this way.

There are so many excellent pickup companies in the United States that make fantastic products with decades-long track record, that put customer service at the top of their priorities. I'll be giving one of them my business shortly.

I hope this helps anyone considering these pickups make a more informed decision.

John Scofield LIVE in 1992 [Live Audio Recording]

Before released… Basically because I'm the one who recorded it! I recorded this in Boston in 1992. Every time I hear this, even with the roughness of the recording, it is beyond smoking!

Michael Brecker & Mike Stern - The Michael Brecker Band Live 1988

This is a audio boot like recording I made in 1988 on the patio of the University of Miami! I had no idea what to expect from the "Michael Brecker band." The band contained Michael Brecker, Mike, Stern, Joey Calderazzo, Jeff Andrews, and Michael Brecker's "John Bonham"… Adam Nussbaum.

Everyone here is at the height of their powers playing with absolute ferocity. I hope you guys enjoy this as much as I enjoy looking back and just trying to grasp the impact that this made upon my young ears.

Just Diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer - Meeting with Surgeon on Wed. (Aug 5th)

I was diagnosed with Papillary cancer. My endocrinologist said, "if you were going to ask God for a cancer this is the one you'd want." That sounds fine and everything but I'm very nervous about the surgery. I have absolutely zero symptoms, and zero indications on my blood work that anything is wrong. I just saw a picture of what somebody's surgery looked like and that looked fierce gross. I'm in great physical condition and the thought of having to stop exercise for (what I read) four weeks is tough to get over. I don't know. I'm probably not thinking correctly, but any help you can add would be much appreciated!

Magic Mind Experience. Cancelled Sub

I have been a consumer of magic mind for probably a year and a half now. What had been happening to me in the recent past is I would get really sick (diarrhea cramping) after I took it in the morning, but I never put two and two together. I would take it after I ate a bowl of oats and had my Matcha tea. That was the routine. 99% of the time I never got sick and quite enjoyed the taste and the gentle pick me up.

After today's experience, I immediately canceled my subscription. I had the most intense diarrhea, the worst cramps, and even thought I was gonna start vomiting. The experience totally fucked up my plans for today. This happened probably a half an hour after I drank the shot. I have read that this has happened to other people. There's nothing in my diet that would cause us. I'm a very clean eater and this has only happened after drinking magic mind.

Anyone else experience the same thing?

Eric Johnson - Live at Berklee (Late 1980s)

Eric Johnson in the late 1980s (or v. early 90s???) was beyond imagination. Fire, soul, virtuosity, and sound combined in a way that is often copied, but never replicated. This is audio bootleg was captured on a cassette recorder at Boston Berklee in the late 80s. Enjoy!

The Seacaster

I decided to create a guitar (and case) that looked like they'd been salvaged from a shipwreck. I started with a pine body and a Chinese roasted maple/stainless-frets neck. The rest involved a great deal of experimenting with acrylics, rust/patina textures, and leather dyes. The result is the Seacaster. I'm working on a strap that's equally distressed.

Sounds and plays as good as as bad as it looks.
