Counterpoint: What if this is the birth, not death knell, for tribal SWU?
I've been thinking a lot about yet another thoughtful post u/Dashakh made a few weeks ago, where he and other lamented that once again we've got close-but-not-quite tribal play patterns.
While I obviously have no idea what's to come, I'm actually incredibly hopeful that, based on a comment (I think it was) Jack Danny made in the State of the SWUnion video, that the devs are well aware of the need to continue to support certain archetypes, and will continue to do so more over time now, there may be hope for those of us who loved playing goblin and elven decks as kids and now want our own kiddos dreams of Kylo commanding a fiercesome First Order, or Poggle at the head of a pack of beasts, to come true!
It was one comment in particular that got me thinking we may have just entered this nirvanna:
>I’m super baffled by there being 10 Force legendaries but not a single legendary of one of the four species. Makes absolutely no sense. It makes me wonder if they realized halfway through making the set that the theme wasn’t marketable or something and hard pivoted to include other things.
But... what if you've been waiting four sets for your Qui Gon to finally be viable, or you want one last hurrah with Talzin, and Mae and the MT unit are just the tools you were looking for?
Or take pilots. I know a lot of folks are tired of Vader menacing the skies, and did he really need Victor Squadron?
Well, my Wedge, who I've loved since he was the very first leader I opened last fall, is certainly happy to finally be viable, too, thanks to the support he got from Yellow Aces Bomber and one or two pieces of spice that just came out this set. I even take most of my Vader matches.
So yes, maybe Homeworlds wasn't the set for ewoks or wookies to totally dominate — yet. And I know with FFG's past track record of totally ignoring First Order, or having only three new bounty hunters since Baby Boba was released, might give us pause. But you know what made that Baby Boba deck better? Cards like Trask Walker, or ramping into a Victor Squadron on turn four.
So maybe Homeworlds was the set for kicking off the fuzzy tribal era — AND the set for letting Force and Pilot decks have one last hurrah. Maybe we can get some credit boosts and hate in Icons to keep that corner of the meta viable and interesting for the year ahead.
We've seen plenty of wookies across sets, and we got two ewoks in Ashes. Maybe I'm a fool, maybe I'm a sucker, but I've got my fingers crossed we'll see one or two really fun Twileks for the next few sets, maybe not every one, but enough that by this time next year, we're seeing a few Kalikori-themed decks top 8'ing sectors. And I hope you're hopeful, too.
Edit to add links to OG post, for the curious, and the SotSWUnion video.
