I need a job

I hope I don’t bum people out with this. And it’s very embarrassing to admit.

Please bear with me. It’s a giant plea for help and a bit of a vent.

I’m a New Yorker. I’m now 62, and have a family of four. I’ve been out of work for 1.5 years, after a 45 year career in creative development and climbing the ladder to chief creative officer the company closed down. I’ve only had 3 interviews since then, look young, and each said I’m too old, or my salary would be to high-I’m looking at jobs for $16 and up-I don’t think that’s too high. I looked in education and becoming a paraprofessional in public and private schools but they’re done hiring for this year. I’ve read teachers in public schools need a teachers degree or certificate. I’m willing to take anything at any salary. Unfortunately I hurt my back last year so no stocking shelves or lifting, and I’m not a techie, but anything else I’m good to go.

If I start my social security I’ll get almost $1700/mo, which they say is too much for certain benefits . I’ve contacted temp agencies, seniors programs for help.

I live with my family-wife 62 (disabled since birth), adult son-severely disabled since birth(28), and daughter (25 with mental health issues). My daughter graduated with merit in law(LLM) last year but can’t find a job and like so many businesses, it’s not what you know but who you know. Anyone know any high ups at law firms? And I nor my wife know anyone in law. Like me, my daughter’s looking for any job. We looked into pet sitting but the shelter won’t allow anyone out over night.

The (SSA BENEFITS?) calculate by a system called “in-kind” meaning each adult in the family pays their share so eg-SSI is split 4 ways. 994+supplement for ny of 87 =1081/mo ($270.25/ person). Not enough for a 2/3 bedroom plus utilities. Fewer landlords are not including utilities so that’s an added expense. I’ve looked at sublet’s, lease takeover but no money no job, no apartment.

I even reached out to a colleague in Buffalo who’s retired from the post office. His kids-ages with mine- aren’t able to secure jobs either. And people in Ontario (can work there) and it’s the same thing. No extended family left so it’s just us.

My wife is on a lot of medication (1=$3600/mo with insurance) but she’s going off them slowly because we don’t have insurance or Medicaid-I’m against her doing that because some of them are life saving. My wife and son have applied for Medicaid, SSI and been denied (when we ask why we get no answer), and we applied for Dependent Adult Child (DAC) for my son, but I was told for DAC either I have to be on SSDI or dead.

I’ve contacted all of my network but most are retired or don’t know any companies hiring.

All our worldly possessions are gone. No home no car no savings and no investments.

We’ve been in a family shelter for a month-all of us having to sleep in one small room with two beds. My son doesn’t understand what’s going on and why, and he’s is having major meltdowns multiple times a day, and they refused to allow his emotional support animal in (who help calm him), even though we had a drs letter. He’s very loud and we’re exceedingly afraid the shelters either going to ask us to leave or call the police.
I’ve been looking into training programs, help from the aging programs with no luck. Part of the problem is they won’t accept our adult.
If you read my whole vent thanks, and if you know anyone.

Jet repair

My son’s 30+ year old jet collection has moved countries 28 times and this year a lot of the fins and tiny bombs and missiles have come off.
Is there a specific glue I can use to glue diecast (steel?) to diecast, and diecast to plastic?
I’ve tried “modelling glue” from Amazon and craft stores, crazy glue gorilla glue, but they don’t work very well.
\*I cannot solder. \*
I’m currently living in the UK so some products from the US I can’t get here (or the shipping is more expensive than the product).
I’d greatly appreciate your expert advice.

I just read it and now I forget the name of cc best?

I literally just read (on here) a post that included helpful information about what a fee harvester credit card company is. There was a suggestion about a credit card when you’re rebuilding your credit is, and I can’t remember the name 😭😭
I know it’s not capital one because that’s what I have 🤪.

Needing a job desperately to feed my family.

Like so many out there I need a job desperately! Please read. My situation might be a bit different. I’m over 45, which apparently a lot of companies no longer want to hire older than that: I’m actually over 60, and a CCO in product development. I’ve been out of work for two years. I started out looking for jobs at my level in the industry I’m part of. I was looking globally. Along with the ghosting, and in interviews I’ve literally been told “you’re too old” and “the owner won’t hire anyone older than her-she’s was 32. Recruiter say “i thought you were younger”. A year ago I started applying for everything-stocking shelves, working for sanitation companies, maid, restaurants, cooks, tutoring, customer service, landscaping, construction (my wife and I completely renovated 3 houses, no contractors, totally gutted including electrical, plumbing and structural-all up to code and passed inspection), all after my dayjob. I’ve read today paraprofessionals are needed so I’m applying for that. I’m applying for anything I can think of, I’m not opposed to hands-on. People say I look 50 so that’s a bonus-but we all know people lie. Since then we’ve been living off savings. Our car has been repossessed. We’ve got no investments, 401k, stocks, nothing. So when our savings are gone, we’re homeless. Just to clarify I’m not one of those unrealistic executives who thinks they’re broke having 50-100k savings. I’m talking 15k left for four people. We’ve never lived the executive life, we’ve never even gone on vacation, we don’t drink smoke or other drugs, we don’t go out for meals, nor do we grab a coffee, our money goes to essentials. I’d really appreciate any advice.

I’ve got 2 severely disabled kids one who isn’t capable of working in his life. One’s thirty at the level of a toddler. The other has a genetic neurological disease, they can’t leave the house and freezes when having to talk to people, but they’re trying to get something from home. My wife has been disabled since she was in her 20’s, one of her meds costs 4k a month, and she’s on a total of 17 meds, but it’s never stopped her until now. She had to have spinal surgery, but complications occurred, resulting in more problems than she had prior to surgery, she can barely walk or sit and can’t do stairs. We’ve now lost our insurance and she’s going off her meds. Lawyers are only interested in class action or cases where they’ll win billions, which I’ve been told won’t happen in an individual case. Legal aid says suing a dr or hospital will take too long, and they can’t dedicate that long to one person. I’ve just applied for SSI for them but found out it can take a long time to get. (Didn’t ever have it before bc we could afford living, and felt there was so many people in difficult positions they should get the help).

My federal pension will only be $1750 a month taking it early, which in New York won’t even pay for a two bedroom apartment(we’d sleep in the living room). It’ll definitely pay for food (but we’ll have no place to put it). We don’t have any family or friends to stay with. I’ve got no choice but to apply for public housing but have been told it takes years too. I’m scared for my one child in a shelter because if there’s kids, babies, yelling, or talking loud, he has a meltdown and bites himself and breaks his glasses. So until now we’ve just avoided children screeching babies and people yelling and he’s happy. Everyone loves him and finds it hard to believe if we tell them about his meltdowns.

*no we won’t put our child in a home!

Back story: the company I worked for closed down without warning, they contacted us Christmas Eve and we’ve been told “somehow” the accounting department mistakenly closed everyones pensions🤨-most of the other employees were in their thirties and fourties so they’ve still got time to build another pension.

All advice is welcome. Thanks for listening.

***My wife and I would like to thank everyone for their caring and very helpful input. It’s nice to know there’s so many wonderful people out there.

I’ve been hearing a lot of people say contact “your recruiter”

I’ve been hearing a lot of people say contact “your recruiter” as though they have a personal recruiter which I think is great.
How do you get a personal recruiter?

I’m in England returning to US. Is there an Expat sub for selling/donating/offering furniture & household goods for free

The title says it all. I’m located in Cambridge England (1.5 hrs from London) returning to US mid-end of June.
Is there an Expat sub for selling/donating/offering furniture & household goods for free.
I’ve got stuff on Facebook Marketplace and in local area groups. It’s getting to that ”time crunch” point
As expats we all know those astronomical moving costs, and the task of having to refurnish, so I’d love to help another expat new to the UK.

What areas are good that aren’t too expensive. We’re seniors in our 60’s, with two university aged children-aka not working. Budget $5000

When I was filling out my application for ILR it didn’t prompt me to do the life in the UK test. I submitted my application and biometrics and other documents the application prompted me for. I didn’t use a lawyer to do my application.

What do I do? I’ve only found out today the clock doesn’t start until the “life in the UK” test is completed. Immigration or home office or the biometrics office won’t give me any information. My visa expired 9, April, meaning I’m still here 12 days after my visa expiration.

For context -my original visa was a spouse visa. I’m a Canadian born citizen and my wife is a UK citizen.
