What is it like in residency!

Everyone knows how toxic it is, doing residency in india.

It ranges from verbal abuse, taunts, shouting infront of patients, to not being allowed to sit, physical assault and what not.

But thats not it. There are places which "CLAIM" to be non toxic and understanding, especially psychiatry. The branch of mental health and well being.

And then you get to hear things like these:-

"All jr1s to not take leave post night until its physically impossible for you to come & take official leave , put on the group & take permission from faculty & rounds of faculty are non negatiable. Otherwise it’ll be marked absent of that day. To be followed strictly"

"Post night off till 11am is a provision. It is not to used liberally every time. Kindly treat the department as a workplace and not a picnic"

This is after more than 24hrs duty with a very generous 30 minute break (in the whole day). Isn't it picnic to expect a few hours of rest?

Sometimes I think, they're not doing it to make us suffer but this is what they have gone through and they somehow feel this is the only way to do things.

This sheer glorification of hustle culture is so deeply rooted in our brains that even years of practice of psychiatry can't take it out.

The feeling of being worthy comes ONLY if you work hard enough that you forget your own self, your own health and still keep working because what is life if not just work?

As doctors we so conveniently (?) forget or maybe just ignore how lack of sleep and proper rest leads to cognitive impairment and hampers, apart from a lot of health related aspects, our decision making. So we're not just harming ourselves but also the patients!! And for what? To tell others we worked 36 hours at a stretch? Get a false sense of validation from no one but ourselves only?

Everyone is making mistakes left, right and centre, getting scolded for mistakes they did and didn't make because all of us, ALL OF US, are tired, frustrated and burnt out to the max and still expected to continue.

Why is residency not designed to divide the workload effectively? And if it is then why not practice it that way?

WHO IS BENEFITTING FROM BURNT OUT DOCTORS?
