Hi everyone,

My much-loved leather jacket (photos attached) and I have been through a lot together. It's well over a decade old now, but built so well that it refuses to fall apart, it's just gracefully aged into the kind of patina that, let's be honest, only really works with a rustic look these days. So rather than retire it, I'd like a worthy successor for the occasions that call for something a little less weathered. No luck finding one so far, hence me throwing myself at your collective wisdom.

Two non-negotiables: the leather has to be perforated like my current one, and the lining should be 100% cotton or tweed. That's it. Simple, right? Apparently not.

I've been combing through Vinted, eBay and half the internet, and the usual suspects keep letting me down. The flight and bomber jackets from Schott, Belstaff and friends all fail the audition for the same reasons: a fur collar (I'm going for "pilot", not "woodland creature"), elastic knit cuffs, or enough patch pockets and zippers to qualify as carry-on luggage. The closest to what I picture, cut-wise, are models like the "Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Luftwaffe" or the "Flight Jacket Hartmann: Brown Horsehide" from Noble House Germany; but, of course, neither comes in perforated leather. That would be too easy.

At this point I'm seriously considering flying to Istanbul for a weekend and having one made by a craftsman there. I've also read that there are genuinely skilled leather makers in India and Pakistan doing made-to-order or bespoke work online.

So: does anyone here have tips or experience? Can you recommend good makers in Europe or online who do bespoke or made-to-order at a fair price? My budget is around 350–500 € outside the EU ( because tax & customs) and 400–600 € within the EU.

The criteria one more time, for the skim-readers: perforated leather, classic (non-elastic) cuffs, no patch pockets, no zipper overkill.

Hallo zusammen,

ich hätte eine Frage zum Thema Bambus.

Wir haben im Frühjahr letzten Jahres in unserem Garten Bambus der Sorte Fargesia robusta ‘Campbell’ gepflanzt. Insgesamt entwickelt er sich aus meiner Sicht ganz gut. Allerdings haben wir das Problem, dass er sich besonders bei Regen stark zur Seite neigt und teilweise ziemlich hängt.

Daher meine Frage: Kann man den Bambus vorsichtig „gerade binden“ oder zum Beispiel mit einer gespannten Schnur etwas stützen, damit er aufrechter wächst? Oder würde man ihm damit eher schaden?

Hat jemand damit Erfahrung oder einen Tipp, wie man das am besten löst?

Hi everyone,

After a few bumps in the beginning, I’ve now been the very happy owner of my first pair of Nicks for several months. They’re in Tan Waxed Flesh, and first of all: thanks again to Nicks support for helping sort things out.

I absolutely love the color and the leather. Tan Waxed Flesh is just fantastic. But from the start, I kept wondering: how exactly am I supposed to care for these boots?

Over time, they started developing a really great patina, but not exactly evenly. Some areas changed much faster than others, which looked interesting, but also made me slightly nervous. So naturally, instead of simply wearing the boots like a normal person, I went down the boot-care rabbit hole.

After quite a bit of research, Venetian Imperial Leather Balm seemed to be the go-to product for Waxed Flesh. So I tried to get some here in Germany. That turned out to be neither quick nor cheap. After several weeks and around $60, I finally had a bottle of neutral Venetian Leather Balm in my hands.

My first tests were on the kilties. The result looked pretty good, but still not quite what I had in mind. And by then, of course, ambition had taken over.

Since Zoe’s apparently doesn’t ship directly to Europe — or at least I never got a reply to my inquiry — I ordered a larger selection of Venetian Imperial Leather Balm and Shoe Cream products to a friend in Chicago. He then kindly forwarded everything to Germany.

Another 8–10 weeks later, and several hundred dollars poorer - thank you FedEx, DHL, and German customs - I finally had a decent little collection of Venetian products in different shades: neutral balm, mid tan balm, light brown balm, burgundy balm, mid tan shoe cream, mahogany shoe cream, and probably enough regret to condition a second pair of boots.

Again, I started testing everything on the kilties. There were a few unexpected results, but eventually one clear favorite emerged. So I finally tried it on the boots themselves.

And what can I say? I’m genuinely impressed.

The neutral balm already gave me decent results, but the winner produced exactly the look I was hoping for — and that was after just one application.

Since the care question is now solved, I guess there’s nothing standing between me and my next pair in Tan Waxed Flesh. I’m thinking Americana.

Hi, I have this vintage leather bag and was wondering if I could have it reworked? Does anyone have ideas on what to make out of it that feels a bit more modern and current? Or can you still ware such bags today?
