Boomers getting health “information” from YouTube

My elderly MIL used to live with us, and I used to assist with her health care and financial management. She moved out to a fancy independent living facility two years ago, but she hasn’t gotten good at the “independent” part yet. She’ll forget or muddle things her doctors tell her, and then go find her information on … YouTube. Recent gems:

  1. I spent an hour on the phone and a zoom call explaining how the ad she saw for a “miracle device that measures blood sugar *without a blood sample*” was a complete fake. “But how can an ad on the tv be fake?”

  2. She’s had major digestive issues, and both her doctors and I have told her to eat lighter, simpler food. But “some
Doctor” on YouTube said the secret to health and weightloss is “eat protein first, then fat, and carbs last.” So she went to a restaurant and got a giant breakfast. Ate a three egg omelet and bacon first, then put butter on her toast and ate the buttered part first. Protein, fat, and carbs in that order, right? “I can’t understand why I feel so sick, the doctor said this would be ok!”

  3. “Hey OP, the YouTube doctor says eating leftover rice can kill you! He says to throw it out if there’s any left.” I explained to her that 1) there’s a sniffed of truth in that leaving leftover rice in a warm place for hours could pose a threat, but 2) roughly a billion people on the planet eat leftover rice in a given day, and they’re not dying.

Drives me nuts.

Recommendation for car tire shop?

Looking for reliable service more than rock-bottom prices. Used to go to the NTB on concord pike (now it’s a mavis tire) but word of mouth says they’ve gone to crap. You’d think tires would be pretty straightforward but I’m looking to avoid the whole “those tires will take 2 weeks to be in stock and once they’re in we’ll need 6 hours to install them, then we’ll upsell you on everything we can” crap.

I guess this is intended as a feature not a bug. My preferences aside, this probably violates accessibility design principles. Please restore previous behavior.

Seeking actual stories: trouble at immigration due to shabby clothes?

So I’ve heard stories about “not looking like a bum” at immigration, but I’m curious: has anyone personally encountered issues because of this, or known someone who has?

I sure thought I looked like a bum — I had gym clothes on and hadn’t shaved in 3 days by the time I was in line, but apparently I didn’t look scruffy enough to seem like trouble. (I had all my TDAC paperwork ready to go.) Closest I came to scrutiny was that the immigration officer didn’t want to scan the TDAC QR code I’d printed on my itinerary, she wanted to see it on my phone for some reason.

The best thing I’ve eaten all week — Hua Hin Night Market, Duang-Jai Seafood

I hadn’t eaten dinner yet, but I had wanted to visit this particular crepe vendor that I have seen in multiple YouTube videos. I found him and ordered the crepe, and it was so damn hot, I nearly dropped it. I also hate to eat standing up, so I decided to find a place to sit. Most of the night markets here have public seating areas so I picked what I thought was one of those and sat down. I quickly realized that I had accidentally picked a particular restaurant’s private seating area. The owners kid came over and handed me a menu.

I decided to just order something rather than be a jerk and get up. I flipped through the menu quickly and I know enough Thai to recognize the word for pork, so I just pointed at that.

I could identify everything in it — lime juice and chili and fish sauce and RAW GARLIC and like 4 herbs — but it was the freshest flavor I’ve had in ages. Glorious. And I just stumbled on it accidentally.

Soi Cowboy at 11am

Was walking from MRT station to my hotel, and Google Maps had me take a turn here before I realized where it was. During the day it’s just food vendors and Grab drivers using it as a shortcut to Soi 23.

Open-book, at-home college exam was due yesterday. 25% of students didn’t do it.

I know, I know “this generation isn’t like previous ones” etc. I can’t wrap my head around this. I assigned an online exam to a class last week. It’s 40% of the total grade. It was in the syllabus. I announced it in class. Canvas emailed them. I sent two email reminders and put an online announcement on canvas. I sent a final reminder yesterday morning.

And a quarter of the class just … didn’t do it. This isn’t a commuter school or an online school. It’s not a remedial program. These are actual first year students at a four-year college. I am utterly baffled. How is this possible?

Been trying to get here for ages. Absolutely worth the wait. Shared a dual scoop cup with my kid: rose ice cream with cinnamon roasted almonds, and tulsi (a kind of mint or basil) chocolate chip. Both were fabulous but the toasted almonds in the rose flavor were an absolute show stopper. It’s *very* rich—plan to share! (Or work up an appetite first!) Lovely seating area too.
