right now it seems like she’s starting the transition back into country radio apart from ikiiky. my guess is she announces debut tv at the vmas and the release date is the 20th anniversary of her career. anyways i’m very ready for country taylor to return.

taylor’s grammy interview
i’ve seen so many viral posts of haters crashing out over the part of the interview where taylor basically calls them stupid, but the truth is, if taylor thinks they’re not that smart, they really have no one to blame but themselves. she said “i want to have kids that look like my husband” and they decided that meant she’s racist and a tradwife. she used “onyx” to describe nighttime because… it’s dark at night. but they decided she must be racist. she said she wants to have a family and somehow that became proof that she’s a tradwife. she described the constant media scrutiny and harassment she’s experienced since she was a teenager as an “asylum,” and people responded by posting pictures of her house. you called her a nazi because she sold a necklace with a lightning bolt on it, you know referring to the line “dancing through the lightning strikes”. like at some point, if you repeatedly act stupid, you can’t be shocked when someone starts thinking you’re stupid.

the gap between political aesthetics and actual substance
i keep seeing these two takes from livvies about serena joy and i genuinely don’t understand them. the idea that she’s “risking her career” by being political, or that a future vma/grammy snub would automatically be because the industry is punishing her politics, feels like a huge assumption. the chicks faced much more direct backlash for being political and still won aoty.
and honestly, i’m much more confused by the praise for the song itself. it feels so broad and surface level to me that if you removed the title and the handmaid’s tale reference, i don’t think most people would even know what she was talking about. the reference gives the song so much of its political meaning that i’m not sure what the actual substance is.
i’m not saying olivia doesn’t genuinely care about these issues, because obviously none of us can know that. but if she’s going to be positioned as gen z’s go-to activist, i think it’s fair to question whether the political commentary actually has the depth people are giving it. there’s a huge difference between political art and political signaling, and to me this feels much closer to the latter.
