Why does it seem like I’m the only 1 that thinks this is wrong?

Why is it the norm that, to get your break, you give your 5-6 patients to a nurse who also has 5-6 patients? Leaving that nurse responsible for 10-12 medsurg patients. To me, that shouldn’t ever happen even for 30 minutes. Yeah, hopefully no one calls and all is good. But what if all hell breaks loose? I never do that to another nurse because I’m so convinced it’s horribly unsafe. I take my break at a time when my patients are least likely to call, and if they do call then I just deal with it. I understand every nurse deserves a break, but there’s gotta be a better way to do it than making another nurse responsible for 10-12 patients.

You make life worth living!

My cousin just posted that on Facebook about her newborn daughter. I know people don’t mean things badly, but like, thanks I guess I’ll just go die then since it takes having a child for life to be worth living apparently 🤦‍♀️

Getting an early start!

I’ve already bought some fall scented candles, I bought 2 packs of pumpkin sugar cookies (because I’m too lazy to make my own fall treats right now), I bought pumpkin spice coffee creamer, and I have my cozy Halloween blanket out on my ottoman. I also ordered me a cute fall sweater I found on Facebook and couldn’t resist! It may be 85 degrees outside, but it’s not stopping me from getting in the spirit!

Almost August!

I’m so excited that it’s about to be August, and we’ll be one month closer to the best time of the year! I’m going to find some fall candles today, and I don’t care if it’s too early lol

Something funny that happened to me

Although it wasn’t at the time! Lol it was like 2am and I went to change out fluids and hang an antibiotic for a patient. The patient slept like a baby through the whole thing, and I was so proud to be able to do what I had to do without waking them…until 5 seconds later when the pump started screaming about “air in line” and would not stop until I messed with it and messed with it for the longest time. Of course the patient then woke up asking “what’s all that beeping??” I almost got away with it 😂

Awful shift

I don’t think I’ve ever in my life seen such rudeness and bizarre behavior all night long from doctors, patients, and coworkers. Time to have some wine. Tell me about your worst shift ever to make me feel better?

Well she made the right call

My wife worked outside 9-10 hours a day and was told she couldn’t use the AC in her work vehicle. She tried to tough this heatwave out, but finally had to make the decision to quit and start looking for an indoor job before she gets heatstroke. She was feeling guilty about this decision, but now damn if the wildfire smoke hasn’t reached us. Now she’d be out in the heat breathing that in for 9-10 hours if she had stayed. At least the smoke confirmed she made the right career move! On to better (indoor) things.

I am PISSED and I need to vent

My wife took a trucking job advertised by the recruiter as no touch (meaning no loading/unloading/major manual labor) and was lead to believe she’d be in her cab with air conditioning. Well, turns out it’s TONS of manual labor and she’s in and out of the truck all day and spends more time outside than in the cab. Her supervisor says she’s not allowed to keep the AC running in her truck when she’s not in it to keep it cool. She says her boss is getting mad at her for having to stop and take breaks often today in a fucking 100 DEGREE HEAT WAVE! I just might go to jail today…

Can someone explain?

It’s rude to ask a woman how old she is. It’s rude to ask her weight, and don’t you dare ask her if she’s pregnant. So why, for the love of God, is it socially acceptable for everyone to ask “Do you have any kids?”

Feeling Like I Work My Butt off and It’s Still Not Enough

It’s why I hate being understaffed. Or sometimes it even happens when my job is fully staffed. Last night was understaffed and I worked my butt off. Patients constantly making requests. Pain meds. Ice packs. Bathroom. Food. Coffee. Changing bed linens because a patient peed in them. I want to go to the chair. 20 minutes later I want to go back to bed. Not long after, I want to sit in the chair again. Then a patient decides at the very end of my shift that she’s ready to get a shower. One tech for the whole unit. I hated that I couldn’t make that happen for the patient. How do you deal with guilt from not being able to get to every single request/task due to short staffing or timing?

Don’t ever be this nurse

Picture it. You work night shift. It’s 7:30am and you’ve been watching the day shift nurse look up all his patients for the last 20 minutes instead of offering to take report. Right then at 7:30am, your patient calls and says they had a BM - you’ve been waiting for a stool sample. When you give report to the day shift nurse after he finally decides he’s ready, he says to you “can you go get that stool sample and send it off before you leave?”

Just frustrated and need to vent

My parents live across the country. I put in PTO 3 months in advance to go see them. I made sure it didn’t fall during my weekend to work. It got denied, and I now have 3 shifts scheduled during the time I’m supposed to go see them. I go see them 3 times a year. And most of the time I don’t even use PTO, I just make my schedule to have a stretch off without PTO. But I used it this time to have just a little longer with them. I don’t think it’s too much to ask.

Is she screwed?

My wife went to the ER recently, and they gave her a return to work note at discharge saying she should be out of work for a week. She was supposed to return Monday, and her job just now let her know the note isn’t good enough because it’s missing some details. We’ve called the ED and they said they’ll try to get the return to work note fixed and uploaded to my wife’s patient chart. What if that doesn’t happen? This is so stressful and I’m kind of freaking out.

I almost had a heart attack

I was just placing a DoorDash order and meant to type in a $6 tip. I just got off a long stretch of work shifts, and in my tired state, I accidentally entered $6000 instead of $6. Not sure what have happened if I had accidentally submitted that, but I had to post here because I’m still shaking 😂

wtf do I do?

My wife has been complaining about severe pain in her foot for about 2 weeks. It only happens when she goes to work. She texts me constantly about how bad it hurts and comes home crying. I took her to the ER one night where they did x-rays and saw no break. They didn’t do an MRI 🙄 she doesn’t even have insurance at her new job yet so we get to pay for that out of pocket. She also stayed out of work 4 days after the ER visit in hopes it would heal with rest. Tonight was her first night back at work. Same thing. Calling me in tears. She was perfectly fine when she was out of work. All I can think is it’s her boots. She’s going to try not wearing them tomorrow. But this is scary as hell because she can’t safely drive with this much pain but if she doesn’t work we’ll lose our apartment and she still has another month before she has insurance. I just feel helpless and idk what I’m supposed to do 😭

I just really need to vent

My wife (mtf) hasn’t spoken to her mother in over a year. She cries about it often, and has even gotten close to hurting herself or worse because she feels lonely and like she doesn’t have a family. I’ve tried to stay out of it, because I’ve felt like it’s her business whether she talks to her mom or not. But after so long of her being upset and hurting, I couldn’t just sit back anymore and I reached out to her mom. I told her mom that basically my wife needs her mom even if she won’t say it, and that she’s struggling with her mental health and self harm over it. The incubator refused to use correct pronouns and kept calling her “him” and using her dead name. And said that the mental health issues are due to her “sinning” and trying to live as a woman. Couldn’t possibly be because her mother won’t accept her, right? I’m sad and worried for my wife because I know how much this affects her. Also I’m infertile, and I would be so grateful for the chance to be a mother even if my kid said they were a purple polka dotted giraffe. But you have people out here disowning their kid for being trans and other petty crap. Like “omg waaaaah! My kid isn’t the right kind of kid!” Boo fucking hoo and get over yourself. That is all.

Sent medical bill twice

I got a bill from Planned Parenthood in the mail about a week ago and called and paid it that same day. They even sent a receipt. Well, I check my mail this morning and there is the exact same bill (I still have the original one in my filing cabinet where I wrote “paid 5/28” on it so I’d know). I checked my bank account and I saw the charge where it was deducted that day. I took a screenshot. I swear if they take me to collections over a billing error…I’m going to give them a call
