Crucial vs WD SSD for my Inspiron 15 - Any real difference

Hi all - Adding a 2TB SSD to my Inspiron 15 to increase overall storage. It's used for general stuff like web surfing, etc., not gaming or heavy AI. Other than the $20 price difference, is there any significant difference between these two? Is this a "Chevy vs. Ford" situation or is one brand considered better? I've never installed an SSD (or anything else internal to my laptop), and I want this installation to be "one and done." Plus, I want the card to be reliable. I've seen some older posts on the Crucial vs WD discussion, but nothing recent. I know that Micron is discontinuing the Crucial line, so maybe that is why the discount? Thanks in advance.

Abnormal wear on my tires - Causes? Solutions?

Hi all - My question concerns some abnormal tire wear I noticed after autocrossing my 2006 Miata this weekend.

First, some background. (Sorry for the long post, but I want you to have all the information so you can provide good answers.) I’m relatively new to A/X, and I got the car during the winter. It’s mechanically in excellent shape. It's all stock. This is my first season autocrossing it. I’ve done one school and three events so far this year. I use the car almost exclusively for A/X; I have another vehicle as a daily driver. So, the tires have about 500 miles on them, including drives to and from events.

The tires are Continental Extreme Contact Sport 02, in 205/45-17, bought new. Treadwear Rating is 320. The car was aligned to factory specs. On the street, it tracks and drives fine. No wandering, no vibration, etc.

Now, the issue. During an A/X this weekend, I drove the car a little harder than in the past, because I’m trying to learn its limits and, of course, improve my times. We got seven runs. On the last two runs, I could feel the tires (probably the fronts) making a chattering sound and feel during some of the turns.

I asked one of the experienced drivers about this, and he said it sounded like I was experiencing oversteer. That is, I was taking the turns too fast, so that the car wanted to keep going straight, and that’s what caused the chattering. The solution, he said, is to either take the turns slower if I was going to continue taking that same line through the curves, or to change the line I was taking through the turns.

When I got home, I actually looked at the tires while I was checking some other things. That’s when I noticed that on both front tires, the outer tread (second from the outside tread), had a dip in it, as shown in the attached photos. That is, instead of a smooth arc from one side of the cross-section of the tire to the other, there is a noticeable dip that seems to indicate that I actually wore a significant amount of tread off. (I discovered it when I was rolling my hand over the tires.) So that part of the tire may not even be contacting the road.

It’s possible that this has been going on for awhile, and that I never noticed it before. But I am somewhat doubtful. (I’m pretty observant.) Then again, it also sounds odd that a few runs in A/X would have done this.

My three questions for you:

  1. What are your thoughts on the cause of this? (I assume that it’s not normal.)

  2. Are the tires still usable for A/X?

  3. How do I prevent them from getting worse?

I know this is difficult to diagnose based on a couple photos, but I thought I would give it a shot.

Adding an internal SSD memory card to my Inspiron 15 - Any landmines to watch out for?

Hi all - I've got an Inspiron 15 1500 Series 5502 with 512 MB SSD. I'm running out of disk space, so I want to add another SSD. From what I have researched, there is an additional slot for an SSD.

I plan to buy this card: Western Digital 2TB WD Blue SN5100 NVMe SSD, Internal, PCIe Gen 4 NVMe M.2 - WDS200T5B0E-00CPE0. Seems like it should fit.

I've done some reading on how to do it, but just curious if there are any particular issues or cautions about doing this. Or is it pretty straightforward? (I know to disconnect the battery before I begin.)

Thanks

Need wiper blade replacement recommendations

I would have thought that replacing wiper blades on my 06 was a no-brainer, but I found out the hard way yesterday that I was wrong.

I was auto-crossing my Miata and it started raining. Two of my runs were in the rain. On both of them, the driver's side blade came off halfway through the run. (Fortunately it didn't scratch the windshield.)

Neither my instructor nor I could figure out why it was happening. The blade was fully inserted into the arm.

Today I took a look at the blades, and I think I figured out the problem. These are no-name blades. I just figured, a blade is a blade, so that's what I bought. (Didn't really want to spend $30 on Bosch blades, which was what I took off.) Apparently the two "nubs" that are supposed to lock the blade into the arm are too shallow, so they don't protrude enough to prevent the blade from coming off. (They clean the windshield fine otherwise.)

I know there are tons of name-brand blades out there. But I want one with a solid locking mechanism to hold the blade into the arm, since I know that different brands use different types of mechanisms.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Please provide both make and model, since it seems that a lot of these brands (e.g., Rain-X) have different models.

Thanks

Need power steering reservoir cap and gasket - Part numbers?

I thought this would be a simple web search, but I am running into a dead end. I want to replace the plastic power steering reservoir cap and the rubber gasket that fits inside it, in my 2006 Miata. I find a lot of aftermarket caps (without gasket), but I want OEM. Can someone give me the part number for both parts? (Or just the cap if it includes with the gasket.) Thanks in advance.

Full face helmet - Should I remove the face shield for A/X?

Just got a full face helmet, so I've never used one in A/X. (I've been using open face loaners up to now.) I drive a Miata, sometimes top up, sometimes top down, windows almost always open. I don't currently do any other type of racing. I usually wear sunglasses, so my eyes are protected. I prefer the sunglasses (which have progressive lenses for the reading portion of the lens) to a face shield.

The face shield is detachable. Is there any reason to keep the face shield on, since I have no plans to put it down when racing? Just seems like something extra to get in the way.

Thanks

Do they still provide golf cart rides to the gates for handicapped people at BWI?

Can you still get a ride to your gate with the "golf carts" that I used to see carrying one or more people, and a driver? I see these at a lot of airports. I am flying on Southwest. The reason I ask is that I just spoke with the company that provides wheelchairs, and he said they no longer have these carts at BWI. He said the only option for handicapped people who need assistance getting to the gate is to use a wheelchair. (It's still free.) I don't really need a wheelchair and don't want to take it from someone who does, but I do need some type of ride assistance to the gate. So I would prefer the golf carts. Thanks

Need lawn mowed

I know this question was asked a year ago, and I've contacted those companies that were recommended. (No response so far.) Plus, I know that these companies and individuals and come and go, so I am starting this new post.

I'm in Leader Heights. I need someone reliable, and dependable to cut my lawn. It's 1/3 acre including the house. I don't need landscaping, just lawn mowing. It doesn't have to be a professional company; it can be an individual, as long as they are reliable and dependable.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks

Private sales of handguns in Missouri

Hi all - Not a MO resident, but this came up in a discussion regarding private sales of stripped AR lowers and whether they require an FFL transfer in general. I recalled that MO doesn't generally require FFL transfers of private sale, but want to be sure, so I am asking:

In MO, can two residents buy/sell a handgun, rifle, or stripped AR lower to each other without any type of FFL transfer or background check?

An AI search brought this up, citing USCCA as the source:

"Yes. In Missouri, you can legally buy a handgun from a private seller without a Federal Firearms License (FFL) transfer. State law does not require background checks, waiting periods, or permits for private, person-to-person firearm sales between eligible residents."

However, another AI search had the caveat that if the handgun, rifle, or stripped AR lower was manufactured in another state, then an FFL transfer is required. Which makes no sense, since practically all US gunmakers are located outside MO.

So, what is the answer?

Thanks

Selling a new stripped AR lower to another PA resident without an FFL transfer - Legal?

Hi all - Just need a sanity check. I am a PA resident. Can I sell a stripped AR lower (in the original bubble wrap package) to another PA resident directly, without going through an FFL transfer?

Since a lower could conceivably be built into a pistol, I didn't know if that is an issue or not.

Short vs long course for a novice driver?

I'm relatively new to A/X, and I've already learned that my biggest challenge as a novice is learning the course and staying on course. So that's what I want to focus on this season.

On several A/X days, I will have a choice of two venues: One in a smaller parking lot and therefore a shorter course, and the other in a larger parking lot and therefore a longer course. Unfortunately, both courses usually only have one or two walkthroughs.

I'm thinking the shorter course and smaller lot might be a bit better for me at this stage, because there are fewer landmarks to remember and it would be easier to navigate.

Am I thinking about this correctly, or doesn't it really matter?

Thanks

I have an HJC i10 in Large. Although I measure a medium (57 cm), the medium that I first tried was too tight. So I got a Large. It seems to fit fine.

I recently watched a review of the i11, in which the reviewer (who is also a medium) mentioned that the I10 runs a bit small, which would explain why I had to order a Large. But he said that the I11 is true to fit. So he recommended ordering your actual size if you buy the i11.

Just curious if others have found this to be true. Should I order the i11 in Medium, or stick with the Large like my i10? Or do they fit basically the same?

Thanks

I've been using the app for about 8 months now, and the scores I get seem to fluctuate for no apparent reason. I would think that the more safe trips (no infractions) you log, the higher your score. But it doesn't seem to work like that, and my scores have actually gone down somewhat at times after logging some safe trips.

I called USAA, and unfortunately, nobody there seems to have a good handle on how this app actually works in detail. (They just say, "it's an algorithm," which I already know.)

One thing a rep told me surprised me: She said that you are actually penalized for shorter trips vs. longer trips. When I asked her why, she could not explain.

I also could not get a straight answer on how often your discount score is updated (weekly, monthly, etc.)

Can anyone shed some light on this? While I do appreciate any discount, I don't understand why my discount seems to fluctuate for no apparent reason.

Thanks

I've noticed that there seems to be a slight seepage or wet area around the seam of my '06 brake fluid reservoir. Everything but the seam is bone dry, there's no loss of fluid in the reservoir (that I can discern), and it brakes fine. I wiped it off, but it reappeared. I'm stumped where it could be coming from, and whether it's anything to be concerned about. Can't find anything on the web about this. Can someone explain? Photos attached showing the area I am talking about circled in red, and the results of swabbing it with a Q-Tip. The amount of fluid on the Q-tip is negligible. Thanks
