MILANO: The news comes from the Assago Forum, where the men's EuroVolley finals are being played. According to statements made yesterday to Polsat by Sebastian Świderski, president of the Polish federation, the CEV has reportedly decided to readmit Russian clubs to European competitions starting from the 2027/28 season.

If formally confirmed by the Confederation, the move would open up an issue much larger than a simple cup draw. The CEV had excluded Russian and Belarusian clubs in March 2022 until further notice. Meanwhile, the FIVB has reinstated Russian national teams in the rankings with frozen points and confirmed their participation in VNL 2027.

What would happen if a Russian team were drawn into a pool against a Polish team? Where would the match be played, given the entry restrictions for Russian citizens? And how would similar situations be handled in other European countries that apply limitations, such as Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, or Latvia?

The protection of athletes' right to compete is the reason cited by the FIVB for their change of course. However, clear rules on visas, match venues, and club responsibilities are needed.
