JUNGLE

whether it’s true or not, i’ve always found similarities to the avalanches in Jungle’s sound, and i was curious to know whether there are other Jungle fans here. i’m very excited for their new album, sunshine!

if you’re unfamiliar with Jungle, try any of these songs: back on 74, casio, carry on, someday somewhere, or (from their side project called loaded honey): tokyo rain, don’t speak

🚨ALERT🚨 The Banana Fosters Fritter is back for the month of August! JD Flannels, San Juan Capistrano (SoCal)

this banana fosters fritter is easily one of the very best donuts i’ve ever eaten, and it’s back on the menu for the month of august. for those that aren’t aware of them, jd flannels is down in beautiful san juan capistrano, a very easy trip via the metrolink from union station.

Beecher’s broccoli mac & cheese

occasionally, my Kroger‘s have these on clearance and I always buy them forgetting that I don’t think they’re very good (as reflected in my rating).

Khoi BBQ, Houston

i’m longtime fan of khoi bbq’s viet-texas menu, and for my money, their beef rib curry (pictured with their newish miso mac and cheese) might be the single best dish in houston. it is sooo flavorful and so mf’ing delicious, always a banger.

Banana Cream Pie with Biscoff, at HEB

this was a new find for me in heb’s bakery department, and i truly hoped it wouldn’t be as good as it sounded. unfortunately, it is fucking delicious. a ten out of ten, and a great price as well.

Connie & Ted’s, West Hollywood

one last visit to connie & ted’s 🥹🥲 i had the nashville hot fish sandwich, clam cakes, and their incredible blondie. i will certainly miss this place.

Altadena Bakery, Burbank

we’ve really like the pastries here so we picked up a couple for a dinner party last night. their new vanilla pod was one of my favorites, as was the coconut (which i hadn’t had before). pictured are the vanilla pod, two mangos, strawberry, blueberry, and coconut. beautiful pastries that taste as good as they look.

What’s worth a day trip?

ahead of a three day weekend for some, i was wondering what things you’ve found outside of LA that might be worth a day trip. for me, barbareño’s baked california (their twist on a baked alaska featuring kush terpenes and other aromatic compounds found in cannabis) warrants a trip out of the city. would love to know everyone else’s recommendations!

Hollywood Sign… missing?

does anyone know what’s going on with the hollywood sign, and why it’s been MIA for the past week or so?

Villa’s Tacos, DTLA

GOD DAMN THIS SHIT WAS SO GOODDDDD!! villa’s catered a world cup watch party and their taco trio (asada, chicken, and potato+chorizo) went incredibly hard.

Belly of the Beast - Spring

this was my second time dining at BOTB and i genuinely love everything about this restaurant—outstanding food and great service. had the octopus and bone marrow, crispy potatoes with roe, red fish with risotto and mole verde, sweet corn agnoletti, panna cotta with strawberries, and a peaches and cream cake. everything was fabulous.

Milk Mustache, Houston $5.99

wow, this place overdelivered in a huge way… these cookies are OUTRAGEOUS. i got a cherry soda pop (great chocolate chip cookie with an effervescent cherry cola buttercream), a snickerdoodle (with a perfectly “underbaked” center, which drove me crazy in the best way possible), and a cookies & cream (which was still good, but my least favorite of the three).

finally made it down to jd flannel, and it surpassed my high expectations. for the month of april, they’re doing a bananas foster fritter that might be among the best donuts man has ever made. everything there was excellent, but that donut in particular was unbelievable. located in san juan capistrano (which is such a vibeeeeee). super easy day trip from la via the metrolink.
