Centro Havana, Cuba by Peter Turnley, July 3, 2026

  • Havana is Cuba’s capital city. Spanish colonial architecture in its 16th-century Old Havana core includes the Castillo de la Real Fuerza, a fort and maritime museum. The National Capitol Building is an iconic 1920s landmark. Also in Old Havana is the baroque Catedral de San Cristóbal and Plaza Vieja, whose buildings reflect the city’s vibrant architectural mix.
  • Havana was founded in 1519 by the Spanish. By the 17th century, it had become one of the Caribbean's main centres for ship-building. Although it is today a sprawling metropolis of 2 million inhabitants, its old centre retains an interesting mix of Baroque and neoclassical monuments, and a homogeneous ensemble of private houses with arcades, balconies, wrought-iron gates and internal courtyards.

Sicilia – fotografia di Steve McCurry

  • Sicily, the largest Mediterranean island, is just off the "toe" of Italy's "boot." Its rich history is reflected in sites like the Valley of the Temples, the well-preserved ruins of 7 monumental, Doric-style Greek temples; and in the Byzantine mosaics at the Cappella Palatina, a former royal chapel in capital city Palermo. On Sicily’s eastern edge is Mount Etna, one of Europe’s highest active volcanoes.
  • Cinema Paradiso by Giuseppe Tornatore, 1988 ‧ Drama/Melodrama ‧ 2h 35m: Salvatore, a famous film director, returns to his hometown for the funeral of the local theatre's film projectionist, Alfredo. He reminisces about his life as a young boy falling in love with cinema.
  • The best thing about Sicilians is their love of life and the simplicity of a slow lifestyle. There is always time to stop and eat, take a coffee, have a cigarette or stop and say hello. The Sicilians are curious about where you're from and who you are and they love to ask how you are, to be hospitable, and to share some stories in the marketplace, in the narrow lanes outside their houses, and in the town square playing bocce in the afternoon. It’s as pure and simple as that.
