Is this a fanfic sub?
I come here to see some cool builds and the odd cool strat, and it’s just people writing novels about content daydreams? Can there be a flair for this?
I am a climate scientist. I can’t take it anymore.
I am a climate scientist, and I cannot take it anymore.
I am cursed with knowledge and it sucks the will to live out of me.
I finished my PhD 1 month before my 30th birthday, and got diagnosed with ADHD 6 months after it.
I am old enough to know what I know, young enough to lament the loss of my own future, and have a brain that is over-tuned toward pattern recognition.
The facts are that the climate is changing, it is changing more aggressively, our best efforts have not worked, we do not have the political will to make the changes needed, and we are out of time. (Not almost. It’s done)
There are things to be hopeful for. There is a bright future somewhere. But it is on the other side of human beings arbitrarily dying in their millions (or more). Just biblical-scale death.
I go to work every day and slowly watch the smiles melt off of 20 year old faces over the course of a semester. While I sit there and can’t honestly reassure them about the future when I’m wondering if it’s worth procreating myself, (and on increasingly limited time).
Trying to slow the wheels of the most powerful and profitable energy paradigm in world history is not lucrative.
I don’t get paid all summer, so for 1/4 of the year I can barely afford to smoke a joint so I can get out of bed. I can’t even get a job at Home Depot, they think I’ll unionize the store (I will).
The changes are so obvious and all encompassing and yet confident people constantly laugh in your face or devalue your career, or tell you that you should have done something different.
The poor fools haven’t seen what I’ve seen.
I did this because I care. I did this because I love earth, and all the earthlings.
I do this for the children of people who don’t believe me. When I don’t have any of my own.
It has turned me bitter. My only purpose for continued existence is the tantric release of getting to say “I told you so” some day, increasingly soon.
I wish so badly that the science was wrong. If I met a genie, I’d ask him to make CO2 absorb the same amount of heat as normal air, and maybe a Diet Coke.
The perpetrators have the power. The victims defend the perpetrators because they are afraid of living a little less comfortably (maybe?)
I can’t take it anymore. I am a hostage on the only planet we know about by 8 billion people with eyes and ears and skin who can see the videos of disasters getting closer, and closer, and closer, they can hear us screaming warnings, and they can feel it getting hotter.
But they look at you and call you a fool.
No amount of therapy can fix this. Until there is a therapist that can make it not be too hot for sweat to evaporate in the most populated place in Asia, I’ll continue to eat therapists.
I’m not gunna give you the facts. I don’t have it in me today. Read the IPCC AR6. I worked on it. It’s fine.
I have come to terms with the fact that my life will not end peacefully. I wasn’t born at the right time for that.
I watch old war movies and don’t even pity them anymore. They had a future to fight for, clear steps to achieve it, and they earned their hard won future.
We won’t even have the opportunity.
Edit: I keep being warned of horrifying comments. Haven’t got there yet. Will stop.
Didn’t stop.
EDIT: CHECK MY BANNER YOU ASSHOLES. Bots don’t write on their fucking diplomas
I am acutely aware of the reasons why XYZ screw up is a screw up. Don’t need a reminder.
Seriously.
I know what I fucked up.
I understand why it was a fuck up.
I knew specifically why it was a fuck up, and the reason I fucked up before you realized I fucked up.
And I promise I am madder at myself than you even could be.
Anyone else?
I got so into beauty building, I redecorated my house.
Don’t skip those ADHD pills, ere.
How would you go about writing short fiction with an ambiguous temporal setting?
How would you go about writing a short story with an ambiguous temporal setting?
Obviously there are limitations to writing a timeless story. But for instance, Modern.
How would you go about writing a story that the reader could very well, and without any indication to the contrary, determine on their own when they imagine the story to be taking place?
Is it 1950? 2075?
Irrelevant, it’s the same message. You pick.
You guys smell what I’m stepping in here?
(I’m an academic who had an allegorical dream like 6 months ago, I write a ton, but not like this)
Edit: “there was music on the radio” = “I could hear the audio blaring from all directions”
My surefire trick to get people to see AI hallucinations. Let them be the expert.
I am a college professor in the climate space. AI misinformation is increasingly becoming something I need to deal with in my career.
But I also Google the occasional “Can I feed this to my bearded dragon?”.
Most folks do not Google search for things they know very well.
(If you are a lizard, Google getting it right may be a matter of life and death.)
So let me help you.
Google AI is particularly dumb.
Google things you know a lot about. Your hobby or special interest.
Search things you have a “Slumdog Milliionaire” (thx) reason for knowing the correct answer to.
Watch how often it confidently “lies” to you.
Now, imagine what it tells you about things that you wouldn’t know sound wrong.
Ask your idiot friends to have it tell them about cars or sports.
Watch them go; “Hey, wait a second, that’s not how many cylinders a ‘71 corvette has.”
Edit: I was looking up some hot keys for a game the other day. AAA game. It told me to look in menus that didn’t exist 5/5 times, and then said “Sorry you were right to call me on that”.
Edit/Disclaimer:
I understand how AI works.
I am talking about convincing people who do not.
The spirit of this message is for them.
I do not need a rundown in training data, prompt design, premium memberships or any of that.
I play with AI so that I can find it in my students’ work, without relying on an AI detector, which ALSO HALLUCINATES.
Edit:
If you’ve read what I’ve said here and thought any of the following.
-this dude thinks he’s an expert in LLMs
-this guy talks like some who has smoked a joint before, must not be an academic
-this guy said lie and that’s wrong because machines can’t lie
-this guy is not being pragmatic at all.
-I think this dude needs me to explain how AI training works as a basic level.
Just downvote and quit wasting my time. I’m tryina help, take it or fuckin’ leave it.
I have NOT been playing for four hours. I smoked a doobie and forgot I was playing.
It’ll happen, ere.
Just unsubbed from climatechange as an actual card-carrying climate change expert. Silenced and patronized by people who know a whole lot less than me.
Just a truly agonizing set of interactions while actually working updating my climate change change syllabus for the 6th time because it keeps getting hotter!!!
This is not to bitch. This is because if you are getting your information in climate change from there, go elsewhere I beg of you. The climate is too important for whatever that was.
Sorry, your doctorate in fruit isn’t the appropriate degree, we’re looking for a bachelors degree in apples.
I got rejected from a job for not having a degree with the exact title of a subfield that is taught almost exclusively within the field in which I have a doctorate and have taught for a decade.
I am listed on our university website under the faculty that teaches the degree program for the exact job I applied for.
I shouldn’t have worked hard when I was young. I should have just had fun and done a ton of drugs like all my friends that now have homes and kids.
A brain teaser for ya. (Probably not)
For the longest time, if you flushed the toilet while the shower was on, the pipes heading downstairs rattled loudly. We try to avoid this, but in the case that it happens, opening both hot and cold on the sink in the same bathroom stops the rattling.
Now when my sprinkler is on, showering does the same as the toilets unless you again open the sinks the hookup for the hose is below the bathroom in question so presumably the plumbing is connected there.
I just don’t know what to make of this at all!
