Intentional or not, Tōkon carried over MvCI's main menu gimmick of having your main team at the forefront

I know, it's not a huge deal & likely wasn't intentional on Sony/ASW's part. But it's still a nice bit of continuity between the two (somewhat) recent Marvel fighters, coincidence or not.

Tōkon's open beta is on the verge of surpassing SF6's in peak concurrent Steam players (28k vs. 32.7k respectively)

It'll probably hit 33k by tonight, & maybe go even further by Saturday.

If this translates to actual sales come August 6th, Tōkon could end up being THE biggest fighting game on the market.

Marvel Tōkon's input latency across PS5 & PC

The game currently has no 120Hz or VRR options on PS5 like SF6 & CotW do, so the PS5 Pro & Slim numbers can be assumed at 60Hz. Hopefully Sony/ASW can add the option before launch or not long after.

Sony/ASW took a page out of Capcom’s book & allows for per-character voice language changes

I’m surprised more fighters outside of Capcom do this, but I’m glad it’s here in Tōkon. Maybe I can try to approximate the roster’s non-English speaking languages by having Robbie speak Spanish & Peni speak Japanese.

Marvel Tōkon x Insomniac Wolverine: Both are getting each other's costumes in the other game

Not a huge surprise, but cool.

The exact wording of the roster from ASW (in the EVO dev interview) seems to imply that each season/year of DLC will be comprised of teams like the starting roster

Obviously nothing is official until ASW spell it out, but the verbiage used so far is within the context of there being 5 teams so far. The implication here is that more will come through DLC, meaning that each year will also focus on a team. Though given how free-form the Amazing Guardians & the Samurai Outriders are, I doubt it'll be as limiting as some may fear.

Wait a minute…. (Potential DLC Hint in the Unbreakable X-Men Episode Mode Trailer)

The ending splash screen giving the release date and platforms for Tōkon, there’s a suspicious 4 at the top-right corner of the screen drawn into frame in a manner not unlike the Fantastic Four logo.

Of course, nothing is certain until we get an announcement. But this is the first potential hint we’ve gotten about DLC characters since we know these scribbles tend to mean something. The question is if it means what I think it means, which I suppose we’ll get the answer to next week during the SDCC panel.

Full credit to the homie Mello (I know you’re here on this subreddit, I just don’t remember your username) for discovering this.

With Tōkon on the way, I figured I'd take a stab at guessing the odds of who will get skins in Rivals (assuming a collab happens)

Given how Cosmic Invasion got a collab with Rivals, I'd be shocked if Tōkon didn't get one as well given how big it's shaping up to be (especially considering the timing of Tōkon's release lining up perfectly with Season 9.5). That said, if said collab happens & Storm or Blade still don't get a skin...

*insert G.I. Robot meme here*

Silver Surfer appears in the Marvel Tōkon: First Strike prequel comic in what seems to be a speaking role

Guess my cosmic theory for Year 1 might pan out between him & Thor, assuming they're both gonna be DLC.

Since everyone's posting their Day 1 mains, might as well put mine on the table

I've wanted Gobby in a fighting game for years, so best believe I'm giving him an honest try. But I'm also vibing with my current Starting 4.

Out of morbid curiosity, I did a tally of the shown fighting game references in Deadpool's gameplay (To nobody's surprise, ASW wins the reference count by a country mile)

Most of the references being from ASW's 3D games is pretty smart asset reuse on ArcSys' part, use 'em if you got 'em. But to do an exact tally...

  • Arc System Works (10 total)
    • Guilty Gear (6)
      1. Jack-O Valentine's pose
      2. May's Mr. Dolphin Horizontal (A.K.A. "Totsugeki")
      3. Sol Badguy's Volcanic Viper
      4. Roman Cancel
      5. Jam Kuradoberi's Ryuujin
      6. Leo Whitefang's Eisensturm
    • Dragon Ball FighterZ (2)
      1. Ginyu's rehearsed pose
      2. Vegeta's ki spam
    • BlazBlue (1)
      1. Hazama Honoka's Houtenjin
    • Persona 4 Arena (1)
      1. Sho Minazuki's Izayoi
  • Capcom (3 total)
    • Marvel vs. Capcom (2)
      1. Dr. Doom's Foot Dive
      2. Arthur's Toss
    • Street Fighter (1)
      1. Lily Hawk's Condor Spire
  • NetherRealm Studios (4 total)
    • Mortal Kombat (4)
      1. Johnny Cage's Nut Punch
      2. Scorpion's Spear
      3. MK's "Toasty!" Uppercut Launcher
      4. Scorpion's Fatality (win pose included)
  • Bandai Namco (1 total)
    • Tekken/Soul Calibur (1)
      1. Yoshimitsu's Suicide (the self-stab special move)
  • Nintendo/Sora Ltd./Bandai Namco (1 total)
    • Super Smash Bros. (1)
      1. Mega Man's Final Smash (via the Deadpool Corps)

I mostly referenced this, but there were a couple that the video missed.

A certain prince is eerily missing from the Asgardian throne room

Between this & the high-poly statue, I'm decently sure that Thor Odinson is coming sooner rather than later in this game's DLC run.

Perhaps my Mighty Ultimates theory could pan out.

Hideaki Nishino (Sony Interactive Entertainment President) explicitly confirms Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls as part of their live service initiative

Not a huge surprise given that it's one of the PlayStation games that's still coming to PC (& not a full $70 USD), but it's been more explicitly spelled out. Funny to think that this & Helldivers II will be their only live service wins (outside of the long-time Sony staples like GT & MLB).

Guns N' Roses' Melissa Reese confirmed as being part of the OST for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls (she does the vocals for Ms. Marvel's theme)

She also worked on inFamous 2 & Second Son as well as Bloodborne, so she was probably another Sony contact. Either way, Sony's sparing no expense for this game's soundtrack.

Ms. Marvel's origin in Tōkon removes any mention of Terrigenesis or being an Inhuman

This probably points towards Kamala being a mutant in Tōkon, though at least retaining her old power-set. Seeing as her show came out around the time development started, this pivot makes sense.

Ms. Marvel Character Guide

Not a leader this time, cool. Also, zero mention of Kamala's Inhuman origins or Terrigenesis having happened.

The fact that there’s a specific section for the team name in the intro videos makes me think that DLC characters will fit with the team gimmick

Of course, this assumes that all DLC characters will get the same kind of intro video. But given how even CotW is doing them for DLC, I’d be shocked if Sony (who’s apparently doing the marketing for Tōkon) doesn’t keep this up for their big (console) exclusive fighting game.

If they fit with existing teams or do new ones per year of DLC is another question entirely.
