Today, we see a similar approach towards the Palestinians. Decades of dehumanizing rhetoric, which took hold after the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, in which Palestinians were labeled “terrorists,” “human animals,” and “barbarians,” have turned civilians into targets and these targets into mere abstractions.

When members of entire communities are portrayed as subhuman, their deaths do not evoke moral horror but instead become strategic events: their suffering is not a tragedy but a necessity. The massacre in Gaza, the killing of thousands of children — many by sniper bullets — and the dehumanization of the population there are no historical accidents. They are the result of long-term ideological manipulation.

The Milan investigation into “sniper tourism” is not just about Bosnia’s past, but also a warning for our present. There is ample evidence that foreign nationals are signing up to serve in the Israeli army as snipers and killing Palestinian civilians.

An investigation by The Guardian, Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ), Paper Trail Media, Der Spiegel and the German broadcaster ZDF revealed that British, German and American citizens from a so-called “secret” sniper unit — made up mostly of dual nationals and foreigners — boasted of killing more than a hundred Palestinian civilians. According to The New Arab, up to 20,000 Americans have traveled to Israel to serve as “lone soldiers.” One commentator in The Guardian wrote: “The fact is that tens of thousands of Americans are actively involved in war crimes.”

While the circumstances in Bosnia and Gaza are fundamentally different, the principle remains the same: dehumanization of the victim. In Sarajevo, the target was a Bosnian Muslim civilian crossing the street. In Gaza, it is a Palestinian child, a journalist, or a doctor.

When a wealthy “tourist” asked, “Where can I shoot Sarajevans?” or when today a foreign sniper in the ranks of the Israeli army asks, “Where can I shoot Palestinians?” both questions make sense only when their victims are reduced to mere objects.

Research on foreigners who enlist in the Israeli army has uncovered three main motivations: ideology, mobility, and a sense of belonging. Some enlist out of a conviction to defend what they perceive as their ancestral home.  Others do so as part of migration trajectories or in search of their own identity

In the case of Palestine, the consequences are even more immediate. The ongoing destruction of Gaza is enabled by a relentless dehumanization campaign — political, media, and digital — that deprives Palestinians of visibility and human dignity: their lives are not mourned. Western media routinely anonymizes their deaths, reduces their families to numbers, and describes the massacres as “operations.”
