What is something special I could do as homeage to NZ in my game?

A few months ago I started making a jet sprint racing game. Being an redneck American, it's been cool learning about the sport and realizing just how much New Zealand is to thank for it..

I want to give a nod to where the sport came from, but I don't want it to feel forced or like I'm just trying to be funny.

A few ideas I've had:

  • Career mode starts in New Zealand. (Haven't even started on career mode yet...)
  • Tracks inspired by NZ landscapes (not perfectly recreating real tracks to avoid licensing bs).
  • Loading screen facts about the history of the sport.
  • A thank you to the NZ jet sprint community in the credits.

But I'd rather hear from you guys.

If you were playing a jet sprint game, what little details would make you smile a little or realize some work went in to it?

I'd rather include small details that people from NZ would notice and appreciate, whether that's the scenery, the culture, the history, or something else entirely.

Thanks!

Daily Update! Graphical, physics, and models!

Just a little daily update video. Controller died just before recording, so inputs are with the keyboard, they're tough to use, so maybe I need to work on that? The dash I am currently remodeling so ignore that. But Got the hull looking better, water looking natural, grass looks grassy! The wave physics was the best part of today. Riding over your own wake feels fluid and natural now. Let me know if this looks like were headed in the right direction! Thanks for all the support. Jump in the discord to chat with me if you have any suggestions! Peep the livery. I messed with the livery editor today a bit. Do you think M+K controls need tuned in? Or is controller or wheel and petal more important?

UI eh, or ehhhh, or ew? - Game Design

Let me know! Be honest please. Should I go for a totally different vibe or is this in the right realm in your opinion? I have tried a few different UI setups and this has been my favorite so far. 👀 The background is actually a video of your best recorded lap on the map, if you don't have one it is just a static boat floating on the starting line.

Map Editor Update + Thank you note! (+wake update)

A few days ago I posted about my Jet Sprint Racing game and got some REALLY good feedback from this community! I wanted to truly express how grateful I am for the encouragement I received. It's an incredible feeling when something you've poured hours into building reaches the point where people are asking, "When can I play it?".

Today I am teasing the map editor system! A LOT of people were asking about the maps... there will be hundreds (or even thousands) of maps... as long as the community makes their own with me! I plan on adding a code system so users will be able to share their maps, have their own leaderboards, and have a chance to be featured on the main screen at the beginning of each week where players across the game will be able to try to beat your times! I have so so many community aspect planned items I am planning on adding to this game. (Tournament nights, live events, stream nights, etc...) I'm so excited to hear y'alls feedback this time around! Lets me know what you think!!!

THANK YOU!!!

(ps. forgot this is my first time showing the wake update. I increased the amount wake effect has on the boat, making your jet come out of the water if you cross your own wake, as well as weight shifting over the wake if you're perpendicular to it! Lots of cool stuff here!)

Have you been to mini jet sprints? I’m going soon!

I have it on my calendar to go to a jet sprint race in September and I’m beyond excited. I’m also the guy that posted a few days ago about making a game about jet sprints. I’m wondering as a viewer (or pit member, or driver, whatever) what stands out about these kinds of events. I know one answer I’ve seen was just how twitchy and fast they are. But does the audience get to see the course before as well? How do the drivers practice the course? Like just looking at the map? Jet skis? What else stood out to you? The noise? The livery wraps? Do people stand and cheer or typically sit? What else does my game need to capture for the environment?

I'm building a Jet Sprint racing game! Feedback welcome. Playtests soon.

I'm developing a game based around jet sprints. About 8 months ago I was watching Cleetus McFarland and started messing around with the idea of a jet sprint racing game. There's not much out there like it, so it's a pretty niche market. I've made about 14 prototype games before this one and never felt confident enough in any of them to show anyone. But today I sat down just to fix a small bug in this one and ended up losing 45 minutes trying to beat my own time instead, figured that's probably a good sign.

Quick heads up before anyone digs in: this is a very alpha build. Graphics, UI, maps, etc... are nowhere close to done, honestly barely started. Right now I'm focused entirely on getting the handling and feel right before I touch anything visual, and that's where I'm a bit stuck. I've driven regular boats, but never a jet boat, let alone a mini racing jet sprint boat specifically, so a lot of the handling is guesswork right now.

Looking for feedback. Planning on getting a playtest pipeline setup!

Game testers love my game… but…3D assets scare me.

I am terrible with 3d assets… so I decided to make a 3d game! 🤷‍♂️And in the boating/jet boat subreddits people are loving it. The game feel in this game is FUN. Not only fun but addictive. The loop is rewarding and I and several testers genuinely enjoy it. Do I need to man up and hire someone to do graphic work or should I try to learn and make my own? Basically everything you’re seeing is a placeholder. I’ve only used blender for very very basic stuff. Help!!

Courses are getting harder and harder...

❤️ The courses are getting harder and harder...which means I needed a way to rehearse and memorize these courses. SO I MADE ONE!

Highlight your way through the course! Now those turns don't seem as hard to remember. Just a fun little side project today. What else should I add to JetSprint? 👀

I have no idea what a jet boat feels like to drive & making a jet boat racing game

HELLO NZ - from rural Missouri, USA!, I'm Wil. By day I'm a PLC (manufacturing machinery) programmer, but I love game deving as a hobby.

I'm developing a game based around jet sprints. About 8 months ago I was watching Cleetus McFarland and started messing around with the idea of a jet sprint racing game. There's not much out there like it, so it's a pretty niche market ... but I'll say this: playing the build I've made myself, I'm already addicted to trying to get a new best time.

Quick heads up before anyone digs in, this is a very alpha build. Graphics, UI, Maps, etc... are nowhere close to done, honestly barely started. This is basically a first playable prototype, so I'm focused entirely on getting the handling and feel right before I touch anything visual.

The biggest issue I'm running into right now is that I don't actually know how a mini jet sprint boat should feel. I've driven regular boats, but never a jet boat, let alone one of these mini racing jet sprint boats specifically. Things I'm guessing at:

-How quickly it should get up on plane

-How aggressive the yaw/steering should feel

-How much "grip" it has on plane vs. off plane

-What the "stab" of the jet feels like when you hit the throttle

-How it behaves through a hairpin at speed

-How much "grip" should it have when on throttle vs off throttle through a turn...

-so much more...

I know I'm looking for a pretty specific person here, but I figure a NZ subreddit is probably where I'm gonna find it.... someone with experience both driving or riding in one of these boats and playing/critiquing racing games, but figured I'd throw a line out. If that's you, or you know someone who fits the bill, I'd love to pick your brain (or send you a build to try). Don't really know what I could offer since I'm on a tight budget for now other than credit in the game (and if this game dev thing goes well a few free keys someday??)

Thanks for reading!
