for canadian citizens PhD applicants

MSc + 1 Q2 publication — realistic chances for a Canadian PhD?

Hi everyone,
I’m planning to apply for PhD programs in Canada and would really appreciate some honest feedback on my profile.
I have:
An MSc from the University of Alberta
1 publication in a Q2 journal
I’m an equal-contribution author on the paper (not first author)
Research experience in engineering/materials-related fields
My main concern is whether having only one publication will be considered enough to be competitive for a PhD in Canada, especially for programs where research experience and publications are important.
Does anyone with a similar profile have experience applying to Canadian PhD programs? How much do admissions committees typically care about the number/quality of publications versus having an MSc, strong research experience, references, and a good fit with a supervisor?
Would I have a realistic chance at getting accepted, or should I try to build up more publications/research experience before applying?
Any advice or experiences would be really appreciated!

BiH completely exceeded my expectations ❤️

I’m currently spending about a week in BiH, mainly in Mostar and Sarajevo, and I honestly wanted to share how much this country has surprised me.

Before arriving, I was in Croatia, visited Zagreb, Zadar, Split, and some surrounding Croatian islands, and if I’m being honest, Bosnia was the place I was least excited to visit. I didn’t know much about the country beyond being one of the two Muslim countries in Europe (mainly Muslim, I mean), but everything changed once I got here.

The more I learned about Bosnia’s history and the genocide in Srebrenica, the more I connected with the country. I’m originally from Sudan, and seeing the parallels between what Bosnia went through and what my country is going through today has been incredibly emotional.

I know that every conflict is different, and I’m not trying to compare suffering, but I couldn’t help noticing similarities in the experiences of war, displacement, loss, and the resilience of the citizens. I went to the Museum of War and Genocide Victims in Mostar, and honestly everything I saw there felt too familiar, and it made me so sad. 😔

But seriously, despite everything Bosnia has endured, what has stood out to me most is the warmth of the people. Everyone I’ve met has been kind, welcoming, and proud of their country. Hearing the call to prayer in Europe, walking through the old towns, and learning about Bosnia’s history has given me a completely different perspective.

I’ve been fortunate enough to visit 13 countries, and I can honestly say Bosnia has become one of my absolute favorites. It completely exceeded every expectation I had.

I came here expecting just another stop on my trip. Instead, I’ve found a country that now holds a very special place in my heart.
Thank you, Bosnia. I can’t wait to come back and explore other parts of the country. 🇧🇦❤️

co-author changed authorship order and made himself first author without anyone’s consent

I’m dealing with an authorship dispute and would appreciate advice from people who have been through something similar.
A co-author changed the author order on a manuscript and listed himself as first author, even though that was not the original agreement and, in my view, does not reflect the actual contributions to the work. I only discovered the change after the manuscript had already been submitted.
I am the one who contributed to most of the paper, i did the outline, more than half of the paper, and corrected everything and basically took care of the whole paper and my supervisor knows this.

I contacted him about it, but instead of addressing the authorship issue directly, he responded that he simply needs to be first author because it’s a requirement in the MSc program he’s in! 🤨

The journal has now sent me an authorship confirmation email. I have not confirmed because I do not agree with the current authorship order. I have already informed the co-author that I will not approve publication unless the original authorship order is restored.
My questions are:
Has anyone dealt with a situation where a co-author changed authorship order without agreement from the other authors?
If I do not confirm authorship with the journal, what typically happens?
Will the journal usually pause the review/publication process until the dispute is resolved?
Should I contact the editor directly now, or wait for the co-author and professor to respond?
Any advice would be appreciated.

i talked to our PI about this he said he would first obtain publication approval and then change the authorship order, we just submitted the manuscript yesterday.
