When do I give up?

I’m not a hybrid athlete in the sense that I am trying to actively strive for improvement in two ostensibly disparate disciplines. I do, however, lift as heavy as I can, and run (well, attempt to anyway) + some x-training (typically the airdyne). I’m also a big dog runner—235#—and less than young—weeks away from 53. Overall, I feel really good. No major, or really even minor, physical issues. I’ve been slogging away at running since last year. (Not a running newbie. Ran for years before focusing on lifting ≈2017.) My work capacity is much higher than it was but my running continues to absolutely suck. Almost no actual improvement in my pacing. Every run feels slow, plodding, and ponderous. Eg, I pushed a bit harder than usual on 6-mile run Sunday. Managed a 12:54mpm. That is just so unbelievably slow. Seriously wondering what the point is. I can lift more, try do get some decent times on the erg, maybe bring swimming back in, more time on the airdyne. I don’t know. It all feels like I’ve just hit an insurmountable wall. I have a remote coach. I like him. No real complaints there.

Kaya book rec?

Does anyone know the book Kaya said was the best she’s read this year? “Kinds of Hearts” or something. I have “Sisters” in the cart but can’t remember the one she mentioned after that. Thanks!

Coaching, life/professional?

Hello, Looking for recommendations for someone to help me figure out what’s next. Male, middle-aged, married, kids. Left a job about 18-months ago where I was extremely unhappy. Feeling very lost in many ways and struggling to focus.

Can DM if anyone has someone in mind but isn’t sure if that same person would/could work with me.

Thanks in advance!

Help me understand the gods in The Iliad, please.

Currently, re-reading 30-years after a fantastic Greek and Roman Epics course in college. I retained a lot but I’m uncertain on how one is meant to “read” the role of the gods in the poem. In other words, if I were living in “Greece” 2700-years ago listening to “Homer” recite the poem, the interventions, or lack thereof, of the gods would mean what to me?

Thanks!

Hello. First time poster here. Be kind. 🙂 I’m interested in a companion podcast for my attempted re-read of The Iliad and The Odyssey. Suggestions?

I took a Greek and Roman Epics course in college with a fantastic professor. (Hi, Prof Winkler.) He really made these two works, and others, come alive. But all this was 30-years ago. I’d like to finally re-read these poems but would appreciate a sort of guided tour as I go in a podcast format. Ideally, hosted by a classics prof. Thanks in advance.

Post-The Odyssey pod recommendations, please. Can anyone recommend a good podcast companion for The Iliad and The Odyssey? (I know I’ve come to the right place 🙂.)

I took a Greek and Roman Epics course in college with a great professor of this stuff but that was 30-years ago. I’d like to re-read both poems but need some unpacking the context and themes as I read. Ideally, I’d like a pod hosted by a classics prof. Thanks in advance.

Not on a Simmons pod coming near you: Tadej Pogačar just won the Tour de France on stage 6.

He is insanely dominant. Gapped Vingegraad on the Tourmalet then proceeded to put 2+ minutes into him on the decent/final cat 1 climb. Remarkable.

Legal question

I received a Writ of Summons today from MoCo Circuit Court requiring a response in writing. The claimant is a mentally ill woman in my condo building. The claim is not just false, it’s completely fabricated. I’m not going to get into but trust me, there’s zero space for interpretation. It’s just completely bonkers.

Anyway, my question is are there consequences to filing a deliberately false claim? I mean, if not couldn’t/wouldn’t anyone be able to file a complaint on anybody at anytime? If there is some sort of penalty, how do I pursue that?

Thanks!

The Death of Robin Hood is…very good!

Really, really liked this movie. While not a movie filled with violence, when it was violent…hoo boy.

I’ve seen/heard quite a bit of, “Who is this movie for?” It’s for people who like intense, beautifully acted, meditations on life as endless cycles of revenge.

Great job by you, Zach Lowe! Supporting Croatia to a *dominating* 1-0 win tonight in Toronto.

Hopefully, the match was neither too intense nor too violent for Mrs Zach Lowe.

Anybody read, or reading, The Revolutionists by Jason Burke?

I’m 120pgs in to this very long book (600pgs of text). It’s interesting and engagingly written. Not sure I can stick it out though. There’s no discussion of the ideological underpinnings of these revolutionary groups/direct action networks/terrorists/whatever. I gather Burke purports to demonstrate the transition from secular, ie marxist, movements to religious based, ie islamist, revolutionaries, but so far he’s just describing who did what and where. Sure, I’m learning a lot of information I didn’t previously know but not sure it advances my understanding of the “why.”

Thoughts?

Recommended Books on the French and Indian War?

Hello all, First time posting here. As the title says, I’m looking to learn more about the Seven-Years War. Particularly, the global scope of the conflict. Prefer a book(s) by academics. Thanks in advance!

Max’s Best Ice Cream

Been curious since it opened. Stopped in the other day. Holy moly is it extraordinarily overpriced. Splashed out for $12 milkshake. (Declined whipped cream for an extra dollar. Lol.) I’d say it was mediocre at best. Independent of the price. What a grift that place is.

Bethesda Track Club?

Anybody have kids that participated? Experiences, if so? Good, bad, or indifferent. Registered, but haven’t yet paid, for daughter to do summer season beginning 5/18. It’s only the cost that’s causing hesitation. $400.
