New cheqing account offer

For those who have taken advantage of the current Tangerine No Fee Chequing Account offer, is there any requirement to keep the account open for a certain period after receiving the bonus?

I understand the offer requires meeting the qualifying direct deposit requirements, but I couldn't find anything stating that the account must remain open for X months after the bonus is paid.

Has anyone confirmed this from the offer's terms or had experience with it?

USD transfer from US bank to IBKR Canada

I recently moved to Canada and have USD sitting in a US bank account. I’m looking to transfer the money to my IBKR Canada account while keeping it in USD, rather than converting it to CAD (Goal is to invest in US ETFs)

For anyone who has done this:

What’s the cheapest/easiest way to transfer USD from a US bank to IBKR Canada?

Is a US ACH transfer possible, or does IBKR Canada require a wire?

If using a wire, are there any fees on either side?

Does IBKR Canada provide US routing/account details that allow a domestic US transfer?

Any issues with sending USD to IBKR Canada from a US bank after becoming a Canadian resident?

Would especially appreciate recent experiences and the exact process you used

Stairmaster equivalent for Grouse grind

I’m planning to do the Grouse Grind and want to use the StairMaster at the gym to train for it.

For those who’ve done the Grind before:

How many StairMaster steps/minutes would you consider equivalent to one Grouse Grind?

What StairMaster level do you typically use for training?

Is aiming for ~2,830 steps a reasonable benchmark, given that the Grind has ~800 m of elevation gain?

Any recommended StairMaster workout/progression for preparing for the Grind?

Would love to hear from people who have done the Grouse Grind and also train on the StairMaster.

Transit visa for South Korea

I’m an Indian passport holder currently travelling from Canada to India, with a connecting flight in Seoul on Korean Air.

The itinerary is Canada → Seoul (Incheon) → India, with Seoul being a transit/layover point.

Do I need to obtain a South Korean transit visa, or can I transit visa-free? I’m particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has recently travelled on a similar itinerary.

PS: No plan to go out of airport

Trade US ETFs in IBKR Canada account

I recently opened an IBKR Canada account and I'm planning to invest in some US-listed ETFs (like VOO/VTI). I'm a bit confused about the best way to handle the CAD → USD conversion.

For those who use IBKR Canada, what do you usually do?

Convert CAD to USD manually first and then place the ETF order?

Or just place the order in USD ETFs and let IBKR handle the currency conversion automatically?

Is there any meaningful difference between the two approaches in terms of:

FX rates/fees?

Convenience?

Tax reporting or tracking cost basis?

Also, when you eventually sell the US ETFs:

Do the proceeds stay as USD cash in your IBKR account?

Or does IBKR automatically convert them back to CAD?

If they stay in USD, can you just use that USD balance to buy other US stocks/ETFs without converting again?

Just trying to understand the usual workflow for long-term investing with IBKR Canada.

TFSA limits

I have a TFSA with Wealthsimple and currently hold Stock A. If I decide to rebalance my portfolio by selling Stock A and using the proceeds to buy Stock B, can I do that immediately within the same year, or do I need to wait until the next calendar year when my TFSA contribution room resets?

My understanding is that buying and selling inside a TFSA doesn't affect contribution room unless money is withdrawn from the account, but I wanted to confirm. Thanks!

IBKR US to Canada move

I currently have an Interactive Brokers (IBKR) US account and I’m planning to move to Canada soon on a work permit. I am a non-US tax resident, and my current IBKR US account is either empty or has minimal holdings.

I’m trying to figure out the best way to proceed and would appreciate input from people who’ve been through a similar transition:

Option 1: Keep my existing IBKR US account and simply update my tax residency to Canada.

Option 2: Open a new IBKR Canada account and transfer my holdings from IBKR US to IBKR Canada.

Option 3: Move my assets to another US brokerage (e.g., Fidelity) first, and then open an IBKR Canada account after moving.

Context:

I may potentially move again (US or India) within the next couple of years.

My investing focus is mostly US-listed ETFs and stocks.

I want to minimize FX transfer fees, tax/reporting complexity, and future account migration hassles.

For anyone who has done a US → Canada transition with IBKR (or similar brokers), what did you end up doing and why? Any pitfalls with residency changes, account transfers, or maintaining dual IBKR accounts across jurisdictions?

California security deposit issue – What should I expect in small claims

I rented an apartment in California for about one year and moved out on April 20, 2026. I completely vacated the unit and returned possession to the landlord on that date.

Under California law, I understand the landlord had 21 days (until May 11) to either return my deposit or provide an itemized statement of deductions.

I received nothing by the deadline. After several follow-up emails from my side, the landlord finally emailed me on May 12 (day 22) with an list of deductions.

I disputed some of the charges because:

- I have move-in and move-out photos/videos.

- Some carpet fraying and wear existed previously and I have evidence from move-in.

- I lived there for about a year, so some wear and tear is expected.

- I asked for supporting documentation.

What surprised me was that after I objected to the original deductions, the landlord actually increased the amount being withheld and added/changed charges compared to the first statement.

A few additional facts:

- No deposit refund has been sent yet.

- I am currently outside California.

- I have copies of the lease, move-in and move-out photos/videos, and all email communications.

My questions are:

  1. Does missing the 21-day deadline by one day materially affect the landlord's ability to withhold the deposit?

  2. Can a landlord increase or add deductions after the original itemized statement has already been sent?

  3. Has anyone gone through California small claims for a security deposit dispute? What was the process like and what evidence was most important?

  4. Since I am currently out of state, can someone appear on my behalf or are remote appearances allowed?

  5. In practice, what outcomes do judges usually reach in situations like this?

Any advice or experiences would be appreciated.

Credit card recommendations

Hey everyone,

I recently moved to British Columbia, Canada and opened a chequing account with BMO through their newcomer program. I’m now looking for recommendations for my first Canadian credit card.

Background:

- 24 years old

- No Canadian credit history yet, moved here on work permit

- Recently moved from the US

- Looking to start building credit in Canada

Main things I’m looking for:

- Easy approval for newcomers / low credit history

- Good cashback or rewards

- No annual fee preferred (open to fee cards if worth it)

- Good app and customer support

- Useful for everyday spending (groceries, transit, dining, travel)

I already bank with BMO, so I was considering BMO Cashback Mastercard, but I’m also open to RBC, Scotia, Amex, TD, CIBC, etc.

Would appreciate:

- Cards that are realistically easy for newcomers to get approved for

- Whether I should start with one beginner card first

- Any newcomer-specific offers or tips

- Things to avoid while building Canadian credit history

Thanks!

Move from US to Canada

Moving from the US to Canada for work for around 1–2 years. I’m not a US citizen (currently on a temporary status (Student visa) in the US) and trying to understand how this affects investing/brokerage accounts.

For people who’ve gone through this:

- Were you able to keep and use your Fidelity account after becoming a Canadian tax resident?

- Any restrictions on buying ETFs, mutual funds, or opening new positions?

- Did Fidelity require address/tax residency updates?

- Were there any issues with W-8BEN, withholding taxes, or maintaining US bank links?

- Is IBKR generally easier than Fidelity for temporary moves to Canada?

Looking for experiences from people who temporarily relocated to Canada and later planned to move back to the US.

Thanks!

US non resident capital gains taxes

Trying to understand US taxes on capital gains/losses.

If someone has profits from crypto trades but losses from ETFs/stocks in the same tax year, can the ETF losses offset the crypto gains while filing a US tax return?

For example, if crypto gains are $10k and ETF losses are $6k, would taxes only apply on the net $4k gain?

Also, are there any wash sale or other special rules to be aware of in this situation?

VentureX downgrade

Hi all, currently have the Venture X but considering downgrading to a no annual fee Capital One card before the next AF hits.

What downgrade/product change options are available from Venture X to a no-fee card? Also, if I downgrade, can I retain the Venture X miles/points already accumulated, or do they get forfeited unless transferred out first?

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has done this recently.

24 month STEM OPT reporting

Hi everyone, I’m approaching the end of my 24-month STEM OPT extension and wanted to understand what needs to be done from the SEVIS/DSO side once it officially ends.

If someone completes the full STEM OPT period (not ending early), is the process just:

normal final OPT reporting, and

submitting the final STEM OPT self-evaluation (I-983 final evaluation) to DSO?

Or shall I report “no longer on OPT” or take any other action in SEVIS? I'm not terminating my STEM OPT before 24 month mark

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who recently completed STEM OPT or DSOs familiar with the process. Thanks!

What accounts should one open when moving to Canada from US?

Any specific accounts which help in tax benefits? Currently, the plan is to move for a short term and then move back to US/ India for long term

Would be helpful to hear from folks who have been through this situation and what accounts helped them achieve financial success?
