End of trip reward bag

Going on my first trip and it’s gonna be a long(er) one - 5 days and 4 nights, with a night of frontcountry camping before we head out into the bush. I want to leave a small bag in the car for a little reward when we get back.

We will be hiking in the PNW, emphasis on the N and W. Weather should be fair but of course that can change, so I might bring some comfy clean clothes to change into for the 5.5 hour drive back. I’m already bringing my current favourite snacks and food I know I love on the trail, but I’ll definitely want a diff snack when I return… just not sure what I can leave in a warm car that long that would be a welcome change from my favourites lol.

Already on my list: hairbrush, blue Gatorade, change of clothes (?), an edible gummy (I’m getting dropped off at home & i can’t pack a nap so I’m doing the next best thing), washcloth

Any other suggestions? Things you’ve wanted when you got back to the car, but didn’t think to pack?

Backpacking/overnight hiking

Hi all!

I’m going on my first multi-day hike (edit: 5 days 4 nights) at the end of the week. I have extra hydro packed in case I need to updose and lots of salty snacks. Im going with 9 other people and we have our emergency preparedness down to a T. I’m also an experienced hiker and I do not typically updose with any amount of exercise - I just find that I don’t need it.

I’m curious if others have done multi day hikes and whether they increased their fludro for something like this. I’m pretty stable in general, never been in crisis since diagnosis over ten years ago, but my sodium is always just slightly below the normal range. I’m currently on 0.1 in the AM, but considering bringing another 0.1 to take in the PM to help with sodium loss.

I do a lot of my own med adjustments without my doctor monitoring me & I am very in tune with how I’m feeling when I’m doing that, but I obviously don’t wanna have a day-ruining reaction to increasing my fludro while I’m supposed to be hiking 10+ km per day. So I guess my questions are whether it is safe/reasonable to increase my fludro for this, and if there are any day-ruining side effects of increasing my fludro unnecessarily short term.

How’s my packing list?

5 days 4 nights PNW coastal trail hike w 9 other people. Food will be packed in a dry bag & I have a rope to hang it with. This is my first trip & everyone is much more experienced than me, so I will be in good hands!

Breakfasts will be wraps w Nutella, dried cranberries, and butter toffee peanuts; lunches will be wraps with tuna packets and crushed Doritos, and dinners will be a mix of crushed up shin ramen & whatever dehydrated backpacking meals I still have in the freezer from my last trip. Pre workout is so I don’t have to spend time/fuel making hot coffee in the morning - I get nasty caffeine withdrawals if I don’t have something. I will also be packing a few snacks - thinking dried mango for fibre, sour candy for quick energy, and a nut mix for calories.

The only luxury items I think I have are the disposable camera & the binoculars + notepad and pen. I’m an avid birder and migration is underway so I’m hoping to get some lifers! I would record them on my phone but I’m nervous about draining my battery. It’ll be powered off except for photos. Disposable is just for fun.

Crab cakes from the cookbook!

They were so good! Used up some wilted avocados for guacamole in lieu of the peach salsa recommended in the cookbook. Got to use local peppers, corn, crab, and green onions, as well as home grown cilantro. We baked instead of frying (425F/220C for 10 mins, flip, 10 more mins) and they turned out lovely - some were a bit crumbly around the larger lumps of crab meat. All in all, a wonderful meal :)

Would you rather:

A: a class include more challenge poses, but have poorer fluency and flow between postures & feel less like a “true” flow

OR

B: a class include primarily more basic poses with one main challenge pose, but have it feel more natural to flow between each posture

I went to a class at a different studio in a different town than my usual one today and the instructor was fine, but the flow felt very nonsensical and disjointed compared to the classes at my home studio. However, there were a number of new-to-me poses that I got to try out, which was kind of nice and challenging! I found it kinda hard to stay in the moment with the weird transitions but the challenge made up for it somewhat. I feel like I would still prefer a class to be more simple but with better transitions and flow.

Purpose of journaling - do voice notes fulfill the same purpose?

Not sure if this is the right flair.

I’m about to start my internship working with youths. I know a risk with youths is that journaling activities can be hard because parents may read their diaries without their knowledge. In the past, I have used the voice recording feature in my phone’s pre-installed journal app to “journal” because I hate writing by hand. This might tackle the issue of privacy as well as possibly some avoidance framed as a lack of time/energy to put into journaling.

Is it reasonable to suggest this as an alternative to youths who are concerned about privacy, or who also find the effort of writing by hand is a barrier to journaling the old-fashioned way?

An immediate con I can think of is that it doesn’t provide the same opportunity to slow down and really notice one’s thoughts in the same way that old-fashioned journaling does. However, I’m not sure if this disqualifies it from being a useful/viable alternative.

I just woke up, so apologies in advance if anything I wrote here is confusing at all.

How do you personally “recover” after eating outside of your calories?

Went out with a friend on Thursday & we had a feast. Normally I’m pretty relaxed about the occasional feast, especially for special occasions and when I’m seeing someone I haven’t seen in a while. We shared a poutine (it’s something I’ve been craving) and a bunch of other food. I overate and felt extremely full and a bit gross after just because of how full I was, but had no regrets because we had a great time.

Yesterday I was still craving poutine so I ordered another one delivered to my apartment, but then I got hit with the food guilt. Stepped on the scale this morning (a mistake) and I was very… shocked. Even though I’m well aware that it’s water weight & the weight of all the fries, gravy, and cheese curds that have not yet passed through my body.

TLDR: went out with a friend, had fun, ate a lot, still wasn’t satisfied the next day, ate more of my favourite guilty pleasure food, felt like crap, trying to avoid restricting and further increasing the risk of wanting to overeat taking over again.

Anyways, I’m curious how others get back on track after an “oops” like this. I’m planning on going for a hike today and doing a heavy leg/core workout (all those carbs will make for great fuel!). Tomorrow I have one of my favourite yoga classes. I have tasty meal prep waiting for me in the fridge and I’m looking forward to the scale going down again.

Folliculitis or KP?

Got these bumps all over my thighs, particularly on my inner thighs. I’ve managed to tackle the bumps on my arms but my skin barrier is trickier on my legs for some reason. If I squeeze the bumps, stuff comes out, but it tends to leave a mark more than the bumps do that I’m certain are KP elsewhere on my body.

Using Naturium glycolic body wash daily w African net sponge, their mask once a week or so, moisturizing daily with Vaseline cocoa radiant body butter and/or aveeno body oil.

Unhinged tip

I run in the mornings. Can’t run well without fuel, also can’t eat a good carby meal that early in the morning. My friend and I were discussing gels and unhinged alternatives to gels a while back. I’ve seen people eat dates before running (healthful, applaudable, nutritious) but I’ve also seen long distance runners eat nerds gummy clusters, gummy bears, etc for fuel.

Saw an ad for the sour patch kids ice pop flavour and absolutely had to have them. I decided I would try one of each flavour and then try a serving of them before my run the next morning to see how i felt about candy in the AM. Well, I learned two things:

I’m very effectively fuelled by sour patch kids.

The experience of forcing myself to eat 16 sour patch kids at 6am is enough to make the idea of eating them when I’m not going for a run extremely disgusting. Now I can keep candy on hand (my kryptonite), get my fill of it, and not eat the entire bag in one sitting. Plus the calories are burned off during my run, I don’t get injured as frequently because I have enough fuel before my runs, and I run faster and longer.

Ahi tuna and cucumber salad

Tuna is coated in a kimchi flavoured furikake, seared with olive oil, and topped with cilantro, sesame seeds, yuzu ponzu, and a bit of a ginger habanero hot sauce.

Cucumber slices just have some EBTB and rice vinegar

Assumptions about me based on my fridge?

Just finished a Costco/grocery haul. All my carbs for the week are in the freezer/pantry (canned beans, rice, noodles/pasta, bread, etc).

Fresh off a grocery/costco haul

Make your assumptions about me

Editing because people are hating on the soda… it’s gonna last me at least 3 days.

Sexual orientation changing since starting cymbalta

I’m a bisexual woman and historically have had a preference for men. I tend to be strongly oriented to whatever gender my partner identifies as when I’m in a relationship, to the point where I will question my sexuality in either direction.

last time i dated a woman, I was on prozac. I took a few years off meds and now I’m on duloxetine and I’m starting to notice complete apathy towards men (romantically and sexually). i can’t help but notice a pattern here, but im not mad about it. has anyone else noticed a shift in their sexual orientation on meds vs off meds? I only had other sexual side effects when I first started meds, and 8 weeks in now i have a higher libido than before.

My 24h urine cortisol came back high for the first time ever and my 9am cortisol blood came back significantly higher than usual (typically a bit high because I take my meds before bloodwork as instructed by my doc). I’ve been on this dose for 7 years (since I was ~18, I’m 25 now). Is there a chance my dose needs to be decreased now? If so, do we know why one’s dose would need to be decreased after such a long time?

Currently I am dealing with either a purge or a surge in bumps. I get pimply type bumps on my forearms and legs and strawberry skin on my upper arms, though my upper arms sometimes get pimply bumps. I am addicted to picking the pimply bumps and it’s doing a number on my self esteem.

Currently I use the ordinary salicylic acid body serum a few evenings a week after my shower followed by Vaseline cocoa radiant body butter, and I use Nivea aloe express body lotion in the morning. I use an African net sponge to apply shower gel, which comes with strong mechanical exfoliation.

I am thinking of adopting this routine in the photo. I’d keep the ordinary salicylic acid body serum because I’ve had success with it in the past, and the Vaseline cream really helps with the dry skin. I’ve been finding the Nivea isn’t hydrating my skin as well as it used to, hence replacing it with a body oil.

Any recommendations and suggestions are welcome!
