After wasting months on Alibaba suppliers, I finally found a clothing manufacturer whose samples actually match what I asked for
Full disclosure, I’ve been working on sourcing apparel for my own brand, and finding a manufacturer has probably been one of the most frustrating parts.
I started where most people start: Alibaba.
I contacted a ton of suppliers, compared quotes, ordered samples and tried different factories. The problem was that everyone’s photos and promises sounded great, but what actually showed up was really inconsistent.
I had issues with fabric not matching what I specified, messy stitching, inaccurate colors, prints that looked noticeably worse in person, and samples that were decent only for the quality to drop once you started discussing larger quantities.
The biggest issue for me was detailed pieces. I wanted to make designs with large embroidery, smaller embroidered text, different thread colors, graphic printing and more complicated construction. A lot of the cheaper suppliers could technically make them, but the execution just wasn’t something I’d feel comfortable putting my brand name on.
Eventually I started looking outside Alibaba and found the manufacturer I’m currently working with.
They’re definitely not the cheapest factory I’ve spoken to, but so far I’d rather pay more for something I can actually use.
The embroidery samples in the photos are probably the best example. There are a ridiculous number of individual details, small text, overlapping embroidery, different thread colors and large areas that need to stay aligned. The consistency has been way better than what I was getting before.
I’ve also tested simpler graphic pieces and accessories with them because I wanted to see whether the quality carried over beyond one product. Communication has been much easier, they actually pay attention to the specifications I send, and they send detailed QC before things go out.
Obviously I’m still building everything and I’m not going to pretend any factory is perfect, but this is the first time in a while that I’ve felt like I can focus on designing instead of constantly worrying about what the factory is going to send me.
Posting some of the recent samples/QC here because I thought the embroidery especially was pretty crazy.
