Having personally travelled a lot across Kerala, I feel the main reason for this is that houses in Kerala are much more spread out. You can literally find beautiful houses in the middle of nowhere. Compare this with Tamil Nadu, where populations are more centered around cities and towns.

I feel this is one of the reasons why traffic has become such a major problem across Kerala.
