Is this book worth it?

I wanna get into Plato's philosophy and I found this really cool listing at my favourite bookstore. I know i can probably find everything made by plato for free online but this looks really cool as a collector item. Only problem is it's 31 dollars for 736 pages.

Recommend me books based on what I've read so far this year.

Here's everything I read so far in 2026 if I'm not mistaken. Currently I'm reading 100 years of solitude, though I'm finding it a bit boring, the style just isn't for me. I'm especially looking to branch out into new genres, tho I wouldn't care for sci-fi (unless it's Jules Verne-ish) or romance.

French or English translations?

Being extremely fluent in both English and French, and being a huge fan of Dostoyevsky (I've read a few of his works in English), I was wondering if Russian is better translated into French because of the more complex conjugations and options. Any help?

What's an acceptable price for a book?

I live in a country where only specific retailers ever ship most books I want, and as such I have no concept of acceptable prices. Is 20 bucks for a paperback a bit high? Especially if it's in the public domain, I find it hard to justify lots of money just to have it in my hands and not PDF. I wanted to buy all 3 parts of Dumas' The Vicomte of Bragelonne, and together they cost over 50 dollars. Is that fine seeing as they're technically 3 books? It's a regular paperback edition.

To what was Murakami inspired/influenced by Kafka?

Could Kafkaesque events be the predecessor to the magical realism of Murakami? In the Rat trilogy the main character not only mentions going swimming but also reading Kafka's The Trial.

Tokyo at night, neon lights, maybe a cat, vibes.

No genre in particular, just nothing by Murakami as I'm already reading everything he's ever made. Cheers.

Based on what I've read so far this year, what book would you recommend for me next?

I'm currently reading The Three Musketeers, and I have One Hundred Years Of Solitude on my shelf. I also read The Count Of Monte Cristo last year and it is one of my favourite books of all time. I'm 17 if that helps. All recommendations are appreciated.

What to read after LOTR?

I just finished The Hobbit and The LOTR and am looking for another fantasy series to get into next (I don't really wanna get into The Silmarillion rn). If possible, I'd like something more adventure and exploration-oriented (More like The Hobbit, LOTR had a bit too much war for my taste) and with slightly more magic and high fantasy elements. I've heard good things about Earthsea and Red Rising, but I don't know much about them. Any help?

What's up with the term "little mother"?

I just finished Poor Folk and Makar kept calling Varbara "little mother"; what the hell? She doesn't have kids.

Pyotr Petrovich in Poor Folk

I'm currently reading Poor Folk (translated by David McDuff) in which there's mention of a character called Pyotr Petrovich. Could this be the same Pyotr Petrovich Luzhin as the one in Crime And Punishment? Earlier Yemelyan Ilych is mentioned in the footnotes to reappear in Dostoyevsky's The Honest Thief, so is this unlikely?

Question for the Japanese speakers (Rat trilogy spoilers)

In the rat series, the Sheep Man talks very fast, kindoflikethisifyouknowwhatimean. How does Murakami write fast speech like this in Japanese, a language without spaces? I'd love to know.

Based on this ranking of King stories I've read, what full-length novel of his would you recommend for me?

I wanna get into King novels after having read Full Dark, No Stars and Different Seasons, but nothing huge like It. Any help?

Are there any slice-of-life dark fantasy books out there?

Basically what the title says. It doesn't have to be *dark* in the sense of gorey, gruesome and horrifying, but rather in the vibes, atmosphere, scenes and world. I'm looking for something very medieval and gothic, and particularly devoid of sci-fi. Any suggestions?
