Waterloo election is coming in the next few months. Please research every candidate! Look for their platform. If they don't have one, contact them and pressure them to make one!

Title says all, I feel like people don't understand their municipal candidates as much as federal ones.

And PLEASE VOTE. I don't care who as long as you researched them. Just please vote, our turnout was pretty bad last election.

And here's the page to see all the candidates: Find election candidates | City of Waterloo

Short sellers used to control 32% of the free float. The low supply could have actually helped them. Now with the lockups ending, they're losing control of the company with more regular traders holding. That's my theory.

I used to be one of those short traders and bought SSPC. I sold right before their rocket launch a few weeks ago and that could have been a really good time, SPCX was around 115 at the time.

Would you call me stupid if I went all in on Enbridge?

I'm young, I'm mostly in growth but I wanna put a little bit into some dividend investments. I want to be able to vote so I'm not interested in ETF's. The stock performed very well historically and its dividend is incredible, as long as the stock outpaces inflation I'm happy.

edit: 'all in' was misleading, i only meant my entire dividend portfolio not all my money in general

Just bought yesterday at 880. It's too undervalued to crash, but the bottom may not be here yet either. Tomorrow could suck with the fed meeting. I'm not sure how much the Iran war is hurting it now. I'll be holding out for a while.

What are your thoughts? I know some of you are worse off than me, but the top is yet to come, I know it.

I See a Lot of Repeat Questions on This Sub and Wanted to Create a Guide to Answer Your Questions

Congrats for wanting to improve your finances, it can save you a lot of pain later down the road. Your Tax-Free-Savings-Account (TFSA) doesn't have to actually be worth a million dollars literally, but this sub can still help you grow your money and ease financial burdens.

What stocks should I invest in?

There are thousands of different investments, it can be overwhelming. To those who want to buy something and forget it, look for Exchange Traded Funds (ETF's). They invest in multiple companies, meaning you can hold some of them forever and not worry about losing your money. There are thousands of ETF's, but for starters, look up ones tracking the following indexes:

  • S&P 500 (U.S market)
  • Nasdaq 100 (U.S market but with higher growth and also higher risk)
  • TSX 60 (Canadian market)

ETF's are better than mutual funds because they charge less fees. It's preferred you buy ETF's (or any investment) in Canadian dollars, so you don't pay currency conversion fees.

If you want to invest in the entire global market with the least worry possible, look for an ETF called XEQT. Many people on this sub swear by it, and it invests in thousands of companies. It is literally an all-in-one investment.

To those who want to find something very specific or niche, they should do lots of research outside of Reddit. There are stocks and ETF's that are high risk, low risk, growth-focused and income-focused. Look for the right one for you. ETF's only tracking something specific can still carry risk, while those tracking the entire market are much safer.

Should I be high risk or low risk? Should I focus on growth or dividends?

It depends on you. How old are you? How much spare money do you have to invest? Will you ever need to withdraw from your investments to pay for stuff? If you want to balance between the two, invest in XEQT, it'll be perfect for you.

Generally, most people should invest in growth investments. If you're younger or have money you can afford to lose, invest in things a little riskier. Buy some tech stocks or the Nasdaq 100, maybe. Make sure the stocks you buy are making profit, so they stay strong for a long time. Time in the market is better than timing the market.

If you are older or want moderate risk, go for dividends. I don't like bonds, though, they can't keep up with inflation. Dividend stocks and ETF's do a much better job, their dividends are just as good and the base investment grows much more too. A good dividend yield is between 2% and 5-6%, anything even higher is not healthy and will have other drawbacks.

If you want zero risk and need to use your money for future expenses, invest in high interest savings investments. There is an ETF called CASH that stays at the exact same price but gives a small dividend, which protects your savings from inflation. If you need to sell some of it to pay for something, remember to sell a few days early, markets are not open on weekends or holidays.

Should I put money in my TFSA, and how does that account even work?

Yes, put as much money as you can into your TFSA. It is the most important account, even more important than your retirement account (RRSP). If you don't have a TFSA, OPEN ONE. Even if you don't have money to put into it, OPEN IT RIGHT NOW. It gives you contribution room each year, so in the future you can max it out even if you cannot now.

Check with your CRA account to see how much contribution room you have. Make sure you don't go over it, or else you may get taxed. Put as much investments as you can into it. It is tax free, in case you didn't know. Over decades of investing, you will save so much money.

You can put money into it easily, and you can withdraw easily. The only confusing thing is putting money back into it after withdrawing earlier in the year. The CRA won't recognize money you take out until the year is over. Make sure your TOTAL amount of money you put in doesn't exceed the contribution limit, even if you took out money and wanted to put it back in. If you think you'll exceed the limit, wait until next year to put the money back in.

That's all, hope you enjoyed, and feel free to ask other questions. Good luck!

JU from Wallstreetbets for their ableism against people with Down Syndrome

So context, people who make dumb or insane trades often get compared to people with Down Syndrome, which is a harmful case of discrimination. And it was very defended too when I spoke. People with Down Syndrome live a harder life than others and are at increased risk of other diseases, plus it is never their choice to have it.

One other thing but the comments sometimes also glorify suicide in posts with extreme trading losses, you know, OP's who are more sensitive than usual and are already struggling with their trading loss. The last picture I shared is an example.

I'm starting to not like Reuters. It's a British outlet owned by a Canadian parent, yet they are so U.S-centric

They've probably been doing this for a while, I've only looked at them recently. I subscribed to their email newsletter a while back and atleast half of their summaries are focused on the U.S, as well as their moderately important politics that every other country would not care about.

But what got me really angry was their coverage of the Canadian wildfires. I'm Canadian and noticed their articles mostly pertained to the smoke effects in America without mentioning as much how it was hurting the very country the fires are in. There were still millions of Canadians including me who had the worst of the pollution pass over. My home city of Kitchener-Waterloo was the #1 most polluted area in the entire world at one point.

Do you think lockup expiration fears are getting priced in?

Stock has been falling much faster than I thought. I thought it wouldn't fall below 135 until after lockups expire. I wouldn't be surprised if SpaceX fell below 50 one day but it could also bottom out right now.

As someone who sees himself on the Portfolio Pulse in all-time investment returns, I have mixed opinions on the Portfolio Pulse

IDK man, this feels so gamified but with real money. It just feels weird. Even though I'm proud of my returns, seeing the other 10-ish people even higher than me triggers this urge to take even more risk and climb the ladder. I won't make dumb decisions of course even when I see this, but I don't like Wealthsimple kinda pushing it on me at the same time.

What colour is the dark colour of this apartment? My family says brown, I see blueish-black

I think I might have a partial brown blindness, other browns I can see though, but I don't know what kind of blindness it is.

There are so many amazing photos on Reddit, how can we get some of them onto the Wikimedia Commons?

Wikimedia is a great source of media that receives too little interest. As long as Reddit users agree to it, it would be amazing to have some of the best photos here posted there in an open-source environment free from the addicting nature of social media.

Is any investment that shorts spacex a smart decision for the short-medium term (1-6 months)

Obviously i wont do anything without my own research, im not new to investing either. but spacex to me seems absurdly overvalued and could crash after lockup periods end. i dont know entirely about how other stocks move post-ipo, some dont seem to have major crashes even though they also started unprofitable.

Claude Dubrick Trailway Might Finally get the Fallen Tree Removed Soon

I called the city and they said theyll remove it, but its been there all year. They cut the grass on the trail and obviously cant get past the tree and just turn around. So either the lawnmowers werent reporting the tree or the city management had an issue, idk.
