Is it my technique? The wood? The knife?
I’m brand new to whittling and was really excited to get a beaver craft comfort bird carving kit back in May.
I’ve started out and found it a lot more difficult than I was expecting; looking at all the videos I see on here and insta, I feel like basswood should be carving a lot easier than this.
I have to put considerable effort into carving the wood and it comes off in such tiny slithers. Oddly, turning the block over is a bit easier and I have been able to carve the other side of it slightly easier - although still not great.
Is it just my technique? Is the blade dull? It’s brand new and can cut through paper just fine, and I use the strop and leather after every carving session.
Looking forward to getting some advice on this! I’ve really enjoyed the process despite it being a bit more difficult than I thought - it could be this is just how it’s meant to be and I’ll still enjoy it!
