Help- how to keep wood roaches out of my garden apartment? NJ, USA

I live on the second floor of a 2-story apartment building. My apartment complex is a garden-style. I have a balcony, and my front door is at ground level (I walk directly into my unit from outside) - so I have two doors in my apartment that lead directly outside. I have been battling wood roaches for weeks. The apartment complex’s extermination company has been coming every week for the last 3 weeks and spraying, but the wood roaches do not seem to be affected by whatever they’re spraying. They start showing up at around 8:30 each night.

My building is OLD, and there are many cracks throughout the unit from the building settling and basically just wearing over time. Unfortunately, it’s not physically possible for me to seal every potential entryway/ crack in my apartment to keep them out. My biggest areas of concern are my window air conditioners (I have one in my bedroom and one in the living room - these are the rooms I’ve seen roaches in the most). I purchased them new only about 2 months ago and I weather-sealed them the best I could with insulation inside the window frame, but I could definitely see how they may be getting in through the accordion sides. I also have wall sleeves in these two rooms for in-wall air conditioners (all the units have these) which are sealed off with a cover but not very well. They still lead directly outside and are fully open on the exterior of the building. This is another potential entry point that they could be getting in through.

I have two pets so I’m weary of putting down any chemicals or dusts/ powders if it could make them sick but I’m really tired of seeing roaches crawling around in here.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Hoping to make some sort of Thai coconut curry rice and shrimp, with these ingredients I have at home. Can anyone help me or give me step by step by step instructions? First time trying to make something like this!

Not pictured is frozen shrimp :)

Not sure what order I should do everything in. I was thinking to fry the shrimp separately, and to cube and boil the potatoes.. Then fry the potatos in a pan with the carrots and onion, then add the curry and coconut milk into the same pan?

Literally have no idea what I’m doing, I have very little cooking experience and just want to hopefully make something yummy for myself for dinner.

What can be done about wood roaches in my apartment? And are they harmless? (NJ, USA)

I’ve been battling cockroaches in my apartment for months now. I’ve been through an endless cycle of reporting it to management , management sending exterminators to spray, and no permanent resolution ever being reached. I’ve been losing sleep, and my mental and physical health has taken a decline because of it. I purchased Advion and placed it around my entire unit. It did nothing.

However, I have recently found slight relief in learning that the cockroaches that I’ve been thinking are German roaches are actually wood roaches. This helped with some of my fears and would explain why I haven’t been seeing them in the kitchen, rather I’ve been seeing them consistently in areas where there is no food… such as the stairs that lead from inside my front door up to my living room (I’m on the second floor), in the living room by the balcony door, and in my bedroom. This also explains why Advion hasn’t been working.

BUT, everything I have read online suggests that these cockroaches are just wandering inside while they’re lost and that they’re not typically infesting the insides of people’s homes… how accurate is this? Is it normal to see 3 or more in a night? And Is it true that they’re not really that harmful to people?

It is still alarming to me how many I have been seeing on a regular basis. The spray that the exterminator applies every 2 weeks has not been helpful so far (I wonder if this is because they’re targeting German roaches.??)

But, what else can I do on my own to eliminate these pests from inside my apartment? I have a cat and a dog at home so I need to be careful about what I spray or put out, as I don’t want to harm them. There is also virtually no way to seal my entire apartment as it is so, so old and there are cracks and crevices all over the place in here.

Please help!

Does anyone here have one of these Mathmos Column lava lamps? If you do, can you please drop some IRL pics? They look stunning on the website.

What can I actually do about cockroaches in my apartment if the whole building is affected and management isn’t taking proper steps to eliminate the problem?

I live in NJ in a relatively large apartment complex (27 buildings). They’re garden-style apartments. I moved here only because it was affordable and my rent for a 1000 sq ft 2 bedroom apartment with a balcony is less than $1700 a month.

2 months after moving in I saw one cockroach in my kitchen and FREAKED out. I then realized I had been seeing droppings around my kitchen for awhile without realizing what I was looking at. Management took a long time to get their “routine exterminator” out to my unit. All the exterminator does is spray. I came across a few dead ones here and there but never saw another live one until last night.

They must know there is a roach infestation in the entire complex because the exterminator comes every single week but only visits certain units on the list for that week. I assume it’s the units that have recently complained.

They’re clearly just spot-treating and failing to eliminate the massive overall population. After 4 straight weeks of treatment I managed to go a few months without any signs of roaches (that I noticed). Until last night, when 4 live ones showed up, and then tonight, I found 8 more. And it wasn’t even dark yet. That’s more live roaches in the span of 1 day than I’ve seen my entire 6 months living here.

I emailed management yesterday about this and they never responded. The office is closed tomorrow.

I’m only 6 months into my lease and intended to stay here for a while because there is nothing else affordable within hours of me, but I can’t live like this any longer. It’s taking such a toll on my mental health and I’m literally always anxious that I’m going to find roaches. I’m scared to even eat my food. I’m scared to have company over because if a cockroach made an appearance in front of my guests I would be so mortified. And it’s not cockroaches - it’s endless house centipedes, spiders, tiny bugs in my shower… but the roaches are the biggest concern.

Management is just clearly not doing what it necessary to combat this problem that is clearly only getting worse. It also doesn’t seem like they do anything about the tenants that are living in literal squalor, with trash piled up inside their units against the windows (tenant’s actions), people hoarding (like actually hoarding), or people leaving rotting food out for days for the stray cats. I’m all for feeding the strays btw but let’s not leave actual human food out to rot for days in the sun to the point where there are maggots consuming the container … because the cats aren’t gonna eat that. My unit is meticulously clean but I know for a fact my neighbor’s units aren’t and I can guarantee that this building wide infestation is not originating with me.

It’s at the point where I’m really considering reporting the place to the state in the hopes that it puts pressure on management to actually eliminate this infestation. But idk what my options really are or what the realistic outcome of that may be.

If anyone has experience with this, can you please share your advice? I can’t live like this anymore but I don’t have anyplace else to go.

Does anyone else feel like Courtney has a super abrasive personality?

Her scenes with Nick stress me out because she just seems so high strung, critical, and also hypocritical. Criticizing Nick over everything and making passive aggressive, sarcastic comments left and right. Saying he’s not doing anything fun but at the same time she turns her nose up every time some of his personality comes out. I really don’t like her vibes.

Seriously self-conscious of my skin texture. Why does my skin look like this, and how can I fix it? I’m 32 and never really struggled with acne.

Need to change the god awful lightbulbs in my apartment’s kitchen. No idea what bulbs I should be using. These are the old ones I took out, and the new ones I’m hoping to use. Are these safe/ okay?

Just moved recently to New Brunswick. Any trails nearby that are shady and near running creeks or waterfalls? Want to get my dog out for a little walk and to wade in some water!

What is this weird callus thing on my ankle? It’s only one foot (left only). It doesn’t hurt, but it never goes away. I’m able to peel the surface off but then it hardens over again.

Has anyone had success with these products for dryness and peeling on the face?

Started using Tret last Saturday night (6 days ago). Was already peeling by Monday morning. I’ve realized how dry my skin really is, as I’ve been so lazy about skincare prior to this. I need to restore my moisture barrier big time, but I don’t have a ton of money to spend. Will any of these products be effective with helping me eliminate the peeling and restore moisture to my skin? I do know that the cetaphil lotion is not specifically made for the face, but I’d like to know if it will still be safe to use on my face.

Just started tret 3 days ago and have no idea what I’m doing. Can anyone give me a crash course and product recommendations for skin that is usually combination dry/oily?

I started tret .05% cream on Saturday night for dark spots, large clogged pores and fine lines. I have used it every night so far and wash it off in the morning before going outside for the first time. I’m already getting peeling dry skin around my mouth, on/ under my chin, and a little bit on the tip of my nose.

My skin is usually pretty combination dry/ oily, I tend to have dry patches on my cheek bones but I feel greasy throughout the day everywhere else. My skincare routine is pretty minimal/ non-existent (apricot scrub periodically to exfoliate, otherwise cerave facial cleaner, thayers witch hazel toner, and then thayers water cream moisturizer or Ponds when I’m extra dry. Since starting tret I’ve made sure to use SPF every morning (neutrogena clear face sunscreen). Overall I feel like my skin usually looks dull and ugly so I’m hoping the tret helps me.

The instructions given to me on the RX say use daily so I was confused when I came here and saw most people talking about on and off days.

Can someone please give me a crash course here on what my routine should look like and what products to use?

Years of waking up in the middle of the night to excruciating knee pain. Always when trying to straighten out leg. Would wearing a brace at night help me avoid this pain? If so, what brace do you recommend?

For history, I used to run a lot in my 20’s. Mostly indoors on treadmills, or on wooded trails outdoors. I remember getting to a point where I began experiencing knee problems - clicking in the knee when walking up or down stairs, periods of being swollen and stiff, and also feeling like there was jelly in my knee. This would come and go rather quickly. I went to a few doctors, had 2 MRIs, but didn’t really learn much. One doctor said I had water in the knee and suggested just stretching more. Another doctor told me I had a slight tear (I only vaguely remember this) but didn’t seem that it was anything to be concerned about. An OT looked at my knee and said my knee caps sit higher than they’re supposed to and said I had a patellar tracking issue. Eventually I gave up running since that’s what seemed to be triggering my knee problems.

Fast forward to now, I’m 32, and don’t experience knee pain until I 1. Try to run again, or 2. Sleep. I began waking up with this knee pain when I used to run but that has been the one thing that has remained persistent. I go through periods of being fine for many weeks, but then it happens again randomly. Once it happens a single time, it’ll happen quite a few times before going dormant again. The pain is EXCRUCIATING, like 10/10 on a pain scale. It has brought me to tears many, many times. When it occurs, it’s after I wake up in the middle of the night with a bent leg. Trying to even move my leg at all (even to just roll over) is horrible. It doesn’t happen when sitting with bent legs, only when sleeping.

I tend to be a stomach sleeper and side sleeper. I never sleep on my back. I’m not sure what I can due to mitigate the chances of this pain occurring, but I will try anything. In my mind, It makes sense to throw a brace on while sleeping to at least keep my knee tracking properly but I don’t know if that’s the answer. What do you guys think? If a brace is the answer, which would you recommend?

Is this black dress appropriate to wear to a Bat Mitzvah celebration?

It will be the first weekend in June. The service is Saturday (have an outfit already for this), celebration is Sunday. Is this dress appropriate for the celebration? If not, is it the cut/style of the color that is wrong?
