I (a new RWBY fan) am continuing my journey into volume 4 part 8: I’m gonna cry aren’t I?
Okay so I’m gonna mainly focus on Ren and Nora on this one and I’ll get to everything else in the next post. And the finale post I’ll post after that. But in case you’re wondering, yes I finished volume 4! And now, onto the review:
So Team RNJR is carrying Qrow to hopefully the nearest doctor who could heal his wounds. And they reach a fork in the road. Mistrial is up ahead. Unfortunately they have to get through a mountain pass and considering Qrow’s current condition, that’s not an option. The only other option is to go to kuroyuri. But Ren made it clear that the village was destroyed years ago and that no one is gonna help them. Ren has some emotions going through his mind. Nora suggested they split up and my first thought was “no don’t split up 😭, it’s no horror show but the last thing we should do is split up.” When freaking Fred Jones says “let’s split up gang.” No. Don’t do that 😅. I get the sentiment though, it’s not like we have other options and the closest thing they have to a guardian angel is dying so it’s a necessary move.
They agreed and they’re on their separate ways. Ruby reassures Jaune that they’ll be okay but considering what happened with Pyrrha, he doesn’t sound or look too confident and neither does Ruby.
AND NOW, THE BACKSTORY…
I gotta say, little Ren is adorable. He finds a flower and wants to take it home but his mother denies it and instead suggests to find a little something for his father’s return after a hunting trip. He tried a couple of stands but it didn’t work out. Right outside the bakery he hears some children picking on someone and wouldn’t you know it, it was Nora. This poor baby bean looks like she’s been through it before she even met Ren. I wonder what happened to her parents because she looks homeless 🥺. It looked like Ren was gonna do something before losing that courage and ran in the opposite directions before bumping into his father (great design btw). I like what he says to him how sometimes the worst action you can take, is taking no action at all. It’s like the opposite phrase of “sometimes the best course of action is to do nothing.” And it reminds me of another quote: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good people do nothing.”
And so… here comes the tragedy:
Ren is awoken by his mom urging him to leave. His mother suggests they go to the safe house while he suggests they go while he stays and fights. Ren is scared, his mom tries to assure him that everything is okay………… and then she died. The worst part about it was how abrupt it felt. I was absolutely stunned by the unfortunate events happening. His father (still injured) is trying to carry his son to safety. And it’s not looking good for him as he’s too injured to go much further. Despite Ren’s lack of bravery, his father gives him his small knife and encouragement that he needs to be brave and that he’s capable of said bravery. Ren runs away while his father makes a final stand against the Grimm enemy.
There’s Nevermores flying all over the village and little REN is in fear and panic when he spots little Nora hiding underneath a house. He finally gained some courage and ran to Nora side to comfort her. Encouraging her to be brave too. And it’s here where I finally know what his semblance is: Stealth. And he can pass it on to others as well. I was curious for the longest time what his semblance was since he’s the only member we didn’t get to see or know what it was. When the coast was mostly clear, Ren went out and got her a little wooden hammer which melted my heart 🥺. I shed a tear when he said that they’ll keep each other safe.
PRESENT DAY:
Ren and Nora reached the higher ground of the mountains and I love how comforting/supportive they are of each other. This backstory gives their relationship a whole new dimension looking back in the series up until now. They really do mean a lot to each other because they’ve been through a lot together. They spot a cave and before deciding on whether they should go in or not. A fabric that belonged to the now deceased huntsman a few episodes ago, caught Ren’s attention and he ran inside. And at first I thought it was a graveyard for all the dead huntsmen and women that gave their lives. Ohhh it’s a graveyard alright. But not the kind I was thinking. Oh and speaking of that episode, remember when I said that I thought that thing on the ground was a symbol that may belong to a group? Well let’s just say that I was dead wrong…
Amazing episode, yes I cried a little shut up 😅😭. Now I kinda wanna know what have these two been up to from then to their first appearance. They must’ve been on their own traveling for a very long time. Also Nora’s throwaway line in the volume 3 premiere about how her and Ren had no home to return to makes complete sense in a very heartbreaking way.
