Kenmore Portable AC

Kenmore Portable AC

Kenmore 10 K BTU dual hose portable AC with remote control, purchased used in 2010 for CAD $300 , Toronto Canada.

I love that it has de-humidification mode because the modern de-humidifiers only last 3-5 years! There is still a minor cooling side effect which is perfect for summer climate control. AC mode is also working for very hot weather but my home is well shaded and rarely used.

The only issue is finding the air hoses that actually fit. Found one that fits onto the machine but not the window boot, but its close enough to be workable.

Budget Tablet Case?

Galaxy Tab A9 Plus

Are there generic cases for this tablet that are good value? Its very difficult to hold securely while not accidentally making screen selections so I need to find some kind of accessory.

Mostly used for the home stereo with Wiim Home App, but I may also like to take the tablet to the grocery store for large shopping lists.

Thank you for any suggestions.

What could replace the PC for digital audio playback?

I would like to have the option to play FLAC and mp3 files from USB or external HDD drives instead of the PC or laptop. (Optical output preferred.)

Current signal chain:

PC >> optical >> Wiim Ultra >> Topping E70 Velvet DAC >> XLR >> amplifier.

Effective acoustic panel placement?

I often see acoustic panels behind the speakers but in my room there is a large window there. Should I just replicate the product image, replacing the bed with my PC desk?

Room photos taken from 2 listening positions. (PC desk, and reclining chair)

(Approximate system potential RMS 1500 W subs, 400 W towers. Yes, I do have a vintage floor lamp on my office desk, please don't judge)

Panels are from Costco, seems like a good price : https://www.costco.ca/p/-/artika-sonolok-slatted-wall-panels/4000249539

Galaxy Tab A9 Plus Not Detecting Dayton IMM-6 Microphone

Does Android normally detect and prompt for user action when the IMM-6 has been plugged into the headphone jack?

Or is there something that I need to check first?

Mine does nothing and I cannot figure it out. Appreciate any suggestions.

Subwoofer enclosure test?

I think my first sub enclosure may be under built.

Its 5/8 inch MDF except for the speaker cutouts being doubled. Is there a way to test, or should I just go ahead and double up the rest of the single panels? The subs have been intentionally left unpainted for this very reason, since the 5/8 seems a bit thin.

They are 12" Dayton Audio Reference Series HO 4+4 with matching passive radiator in a 1.0 cu ft sealed enclosure with about 750 Watts from a Crown amp in 4 ohm bridge.

Are tablets a good choice for using the WiiM Home App?

I have ordered the WiiM Ultra for its room correction and bass management in a 2.2 passive speaker setup. No intentions at the moment of using streaming features.

My cell phone is too old so I need to upgrade into something basic but functional. Tablets are more affordable than even very old cell phones so I wonder how they are with the Wiim app?

In the meantime, does the WiiM Home App work with Windows or Linux?

Apple tree ground cover plants, or strictly mulch?

Should I also remove strawberry ground cover from the base of these trees? Same question for comfrey that I would like to use in another area before natural weeds become fully established like in this photo background..

Speaking generally about the young orchard / food forest, It would be nice to bring a mower through here but the terrain is too rugged and loaded with surface roots, tree stumps, and rocks. I do have a brush cutter but its a large job for that tool. Eventually the apple trees should shade out most of the area when mature being mostly on full size root stocks other than Liberty apple. Until then I battle sumac, native raspberry, grasses, and Canada thistles.

2023 planting, became deer food until mid summer 2024 when the fencing was added. Liberty apple had the best sunny location and also less deer damage, thus it is more advanced.

The Nova EasyGro apple has a few blossoms so there may be enough local pollination to get a small crop of Liberty apples for the first harvest! Finally a reason to look forward to fall!

Any tips to locate the room vibrations?

I had been disappointed with my subwoofer boxes, but its come to my attention that the poor sound appears to be some room vibrations and not the speakers system directly.

I fear that it could even be the furnace metal ducting in the floor but its hard to say for sure. Any tips to locate and solve such annoying issues?

Thanks.

NEC 690.7 rule, or the MPPT hard limit?

>"NEC 690.7 rule: The maximum system voltage must account for a 125% safety factor on Voc at minimum temperature. This means your string cold Voc (450.1V) must not exceed 400.0V (= 500V ÷ 1.25) to be code-compliant. The hard limit is 500V. Most MPPT warranties are voided if input voltage is exceeded even once."

Its the first time I have ever heard of this limit by using this online calculation tool Is my solar string actually too large? It can reach -40 C here but not every year, and typically only for a few days at a time.

Would a nut milk bag remove thistle spines after high-speed blending?

There is a patch of Canada Thistles that I am trying to remove from a garden area. Was thinking it would be nice to make them into food since they are fully edible after removing all the sharp spines.

The nut bag filter method works great for making Aronia berry juice so I am inclined to think the thistles will be no different, other than tasting much worse.

Are theft or vandalism an issue for ground mounted solar panels?

I plan to install 10 kw of ground mounted panels but the best location is in the very corner of my yard that is only about 10 feet from the street.

Not typically the place that I like to leave anything of value, but building it farther from the street would consume prime usable space from my driveway.

Otherwise I am very happy today about finding an affordable mount for this size of array that only requires 6 ground anchors and also works for the very large commercial panels (620W).

Black Fly season is underway

Been doing yard-work all week in Bonfield Township (north side of Algonquin) but only started getting bitten yesterday.

My plan is just stay indoors for the next 3 weeks, good luck to you all.

Using the ATV with a failed battery?

2008 Rancher 420

The local shop has new batteries in stock but its 20 minutes drive and my car is still in storage for another 2 weeks.

Is it okay to just boost the quad with jumper cables and car battery for driving to the local shop? The battery was working great yesterday and on trickle charger overnight, but completely flat in the morning.

6 yo battery, but still really strange.

Germinating Locust Seed

About half of the honey locust seed did not respond to the hot water soaking. I then tried a couple types of hand file, and nail clipper but finally had success with a bench grinder wheel.

Just touch the seed carefully to the grinding stone or belt sander until a small patch of top layer has been removed, then soak in water until they are fully swelled.

Two seeds on the right hand side are half swollen, need more soaking time.

Sub box rework to have double panel thickness.

Is the 5/8 MDF enough for 700 Watt 12 inch driver and passive combo? Not exactly thrilled with the sound but could have sub woofer cabinet resonance, or not enough passive.

Maybe even a bit of both?

Its fairly easy to double the panel thickness from the outside so that seems like the first thing to try.

Crown XLS 1502 amplifier 1550 W @ 4 ohms for 2.2 stereo. (Paired with Energy C-8 floor speakers, 3e Audio A7 mono amps.)

https://www.daytonaudio.com/product/1426/rss315-pr-12-aluminum-cone-passive-radiator

Id like to upgrade the pre amp to XLR and high pass filter options. Then I am still not sure between basic DSP, or an Schiit Audio Lokius Equaliser.
