The Dagda | Brush, Ink, Watercolor, Collage | Irish Mythology

I present an original illustration of the Dagda, a god from Irish mythology. This is from Manchán Magan's ‘Ireland in Iceland: Gaelic Remnants in a Nordic Land’.

He was a god of agriculture, with two magical pigs, and a cauldron of plenty or ‘coire ansic’, which never ran dry. Also fruit trees which were never barren.

The book is available online to buy, I encourage anybody to seek it out, the late Manchán wrote a stirring adventure by land and sea, encompassing vast history, folklore and myth. It includes 125+ ink and watercolor illustrations of mine.

I am Aodh Ó Riagáin AKA Oreganillo, I am working in the tradition of the filí, the ancient poets, preserving and adapting Irish myth and folklore across multiple mediums, from illustration to animation, comics and film. I am devoted to producing richly realised and epic renditions of these myths for the purpose of my own decolonisation, and to hopefully aid others in the same quest. This is a vocation, a lifelong quest for me.

'Retreat of the Tuatha Dé Danann' by Aodh Ó Riagáin | Brush, Ink, Watercolor, Collage

I present 'Retreat of the Tuatha Dé Danann', a piece of artwork I created for the late Manchán Magan's penultimate book, 'Ireland in Iceland: Gaelic Remnants in a Nordic Land'. This piece was featured in Manchan's essay for the Irish Times Weekend paper.

This is one of 120+ pieces I illustrated for the book using brush, pen, ink and watercolor.

In the age of AI, the foundation of all my work is traditional media on paper. Here I have applied open source photography of a sky to compliment the foreground illustration. This mixed media approach is a continuing element of my work.

I am deeply proud of 'Ireland in Iceland: Gaelic Remnants in a Nordic Land', to have collaborated with Manchán, a great mentor and a true druid. Please seek it out.

Heute ist der Tag | Traditional Animation by Oreganillo | Official Music Video

I present my ‘Heute Ist Der Tag’ the music video I created in collaboration with the German musician Carstiboy! This video is a fierce satire, it is not for the faint of heart.

As usual, I animated this using traditional tools, a brush, pen, and ink. Following this, I scanned each frame and digitally colored. This is without a doubt my most dense animation yet.

This video draws on historical tensions between the Christian and Muslim worlds. It follows a fascist pope who dreams of destruction, and quicker seeks out the suffering of others to quench his own pain and fear.

Having been born in 1998, the majority of western pop culture of my life has been heavily informed by 9/11, and much of it contained a Trojan horse of Islamophobia. This work is in many ways a response. While working on this, the post-colonial works of the late Palestinian scholar Edward Said informed me greatly, speaking of the shadow of the western world.

It is almost a rite of passage for Irish artists like myself to create a heretic piece of art such as this. Please share if you enjoy.

BRUSH & INK ABSOLUTE BATMAN

My take on Absolute Batman! I love the manga infused soul Nick Dragotta brings to this series, Scott Snyder is the best in the biz when it comes to narrative progression. I sense I'll be doing more takes on these characters soon. Anxious to illustrate the Robins...

Illustrated with a brush, pen and ink on paper, coloured digitally. I love when a comic page showcases a character's interiority, and unmasking Bruce felt a right way to do it here.

Watch this space for more of my takes on iconic characters going forward as I work steadily on my own comic projects... It is a goal of mine to be working on variant covers before too long.

Festival for the Children of Lir // illustration with brush, ink and watercolor

I present to you the festival of Lir, held for his children who have been transformed into swans through a scornful spell. They are: Fionnuala, Aodh, Fiachra, and Conn. 🦢🦢🦢🦢

The tragedy of the children of Lir is the most popularly known Gaelic myth. I was recently commissioned to create an ink and watercolor illustration using this myth, and I chose this moment to illuminate.

Without a doubt the largest crowd of individuals I have illustrated. Sometimes it’s necessary for lack of time, but I hesitate to drawn faceless crowds of generic bodies. I love the quality of seeing somebody and their soul or essence is manifest in their costume and action.
