Why do I (M) feel affected when women say "men are disgusting" even though I know they mean not all, and that I know I'm not part of the type of men they talk about?

You know when you're just randomly discussing with a woman, then she suddenly blurts out that men are disgusting because of this and that, which I do agree with, but it still stresses me out - and I want to know why.

I feel like I have some built-in defense mechanism to prove that not all men are like that, but a side of me just wants to keep silent because I wouldn't want to butt into such a sensitive topic. I know their reasons are valid, and I don't want to stress myself out by defending myself since it would just be interpretted as being insensitive.

I feel like it's not really a topic I'd really feel at ease with, even though I agree with their points.

How do you get by carrying the load of people resigning?

Long read, but just want to share since I'm on my last bit of patience.

I was hired as an Achitectural & Structural modeler for a contractor in SG for a new multi block project.

When the project started, I was only working with a manager who managed 3 projects, while I was alone at site - this, along with an outsourced team of around 5 who also handled a few projects for the company.

My work was okay, until the outsourced team had to sign off since their work quality wasn't up to par with the site managers standard.

Workload went to me, I was getting chased with deadlines but I tried my best to cope.

A new coordinator was hired, but the company made him handle another project, so he was busy coordinating with subcontractors and rarely modeled with me, which I understood.

A new outsourced team was hired from China, who I wasn't able to communicate with, so they hired another Chinese modeler who was supposedly able to liaise with them, but he can barely speak english - hence I have to chat with him to communicate (he'll use a translator on his PC).

Then the chinese team resigned, their models failed too, which I had to fix again. What made it worse was that I found out that our new staff couldn't even use Revit properly. He doesn't know how to use filters, plot, edit views, and even the basic commands, he also needs to use a translator for Revit.

I give him instructions, he tries to do them but he can't follow. I tell him to chat or give me screenshots of his questions, but nothing. He needs full time supervision, which I could give if I had the time, but the work load is already killing me.

The site people are expecting twice the productivity since they already have another modeler with me, but it ends up getting halved because I have to review his work, the model gets messed up, and I have to fix everything, teach him, and all that.

Luckily the coordinator understands my situation, but the site people can't seem to understand and are expecting me to catch up while adding more demands with their micro requests of editing a few CAD files here and there.

I'm on my way to setting up my portfolio to jump ship, but don't know if it's the best choice.

I'm okay with my BIM supervisors, but I feel like I'm barely learning anything since I'm still stuck with modeling, we don't use ACC, the company doesn't have standard templates, the master models are messed up, and a lot of other things that don't help with growth. It'll be around 4 more years before we finish the project.

Lastly, part of whats stressing me out is that I have to do overtime to cope up with all this - which I've been trying to avoid. As much as possible I'd like to only work a maximum of 8 hours a day, which was okay prior to the outsourced teams resigning.

I don't feel comfortable doing overtime work, especially if the cause isn't my fault. After a traumatic burnout of working 8-11pm for a year for a previous company, it's starting to stress me out a bit - and I don't want to act hero since I'm not really getting anything in return.

I'm now working an extra 2 hours, which may increase along the way. Sadly, we don't even have overtime pay.

How much do you spend on maintaining your bicycles?

Just got my salary and I was thinking if I should push through with buying a bike, or just sticking to the rental subscriptions. Primary use is for my 2km commutes to work.

I'm currently subscribed to the 3 month - 30 dollar pass, and it's actually working fine atm.

I was thinking of buying my own bike, but the thought of having to maintain it crossed my mind. Just wondering if it costs more to maintain your own bike than using the rental ones.

Revit sub removed my post. Just curious about when you model stairs separately?

I'm on the contractor side and we need to produce shop drawings for the stairs soon.

The consultants drawings and specs call for precast stairs with some details here and there that I couldn't seem to achieve with the built in Revit stairs.

Some of the connection and stringer details need to be shown on the model not just 2D , but after some time of experimenting, I'm kind of concluding that they're only achievable if I model them separately instead.

I'm just not sure if it's something modelers also do, and if it's acceptable in practice?

Just to add. My head is also starting to hurt with how glitchy the tread, nosing, and risers are behaving. Like how sometimes they work and sometimes they don't even with the exact same parameters set up 😅

btw, I'm working with the 2024 version

Should I spend money on BIM certificates?

Note: I used AI to shorten my post.

I’m debating whether to drop some serious cash on the BIM Specialist course at BCA Singapore, but the price tag is giving me major anxiety. It’s going to wipe out two whole months of my salary—basically a full year of my savings. My company thinks I should take it, but since I've been there for less than a year, they're not willing to subsidize a portion of the costs.

My supervisors swear it’s the golden ticket if I ever want to jump to a big international firm. But here's the thing: I’m completely self-taught. I learned everything through YouTube, Udemy, and just messing around on my own projects. The funny part is, I have friends who actually graduated from this exact course, and they often come to me to solve their technical problems. I also ended up being the one making automation tools with dynamo to speed up some of our departments process.

I know for a fact I can learn all of the curriculums stuff online for free or for less. But I'm stuck with this lingering worry: am I going to get trapped under a "paper ceiling"? Will companies refuse to promote me to higher roles just because I don't have the official piece of paper?

Any updates on the cause?

Rewording my previous post.

Some of my friends assumed na baka made for a lesser storeys yung design.

I’ve worked with a few engineers, and I’ve heard the phrase “pwede na yan” quite often during my practice. Pati mga kasama ko sa engineering office and OBO back then didn’t even have enough site experience to actually inspect buildings, kasi fresh grad silang nakapasok with their kapit.

May time pa na yung inapprove namin for permit was for 2 storeys, pero umakyat na yung building ng owner to 5. And binobila bola niya nalang yung boss namin na ipoprocess niya yung addition soon, pero walang nangyari after niyang magpainom. Yung foreman pa nagmamagaling na dinagdagan raw nila ng bakal yung columns para matibay without the backing of any computations.

Praying for the workers na hinahanap nila 🙏

What to inspect on secondhand devices?

Planning to buy a secondhand Oppo Find X9 Pro on buy and sell apps as online shops are out of stock. Posting here because I want to know what to inspect before pulling the trigger?

For context, I work in Singapore where people keep buying and selling stuff whenever something new comes up. Phones are up for sale from 850-1100usd.

Some sellers I found are known and highly regarded shops, but some cheaper ones are from people who I’ve filtered out based on reviews, replies, and willingness to meet up.

The only things I want to make sure of is if the phonr is Global ROM but, other than that, I’m not quite sure if I’d have to inspect things other than scratches.

Like should I zoom in and out of the camera to make sure they’re working? Do a stress test? Do something to make sure it’s not a fake global ROM (if that exists)?

Any tips?

How to model detailed stairs?

I have a problem drawing the stairs to match the actual detail drawings.

The construction drawings show the stringers being 100mm perpendicular to the nosing, and 115mm above the landing.

The stringer should be continuous up to the 30th floor and should also extend a bit at the landing.

I’ve been experimenting with the stair parameters for a while to achieve the exact details but still can’t get it to perfect.

The stringers can’t become continuous even if I make the stairs continuous to every level, and I couldn’t quite achieve the 100mm and 115mm offset from the nosing and landing respectively, it’s either one or the other.

I saw other models made by my colleagues, some just use the typical stairs without any care of the details, while another modeled the stairs as a separate family, modeling the nosing, steps, and stringers separately then loading it into the project.

I’ve read that the stair tool in revit is more of an SD/DD tool and wanted to confirm if that’s true. Because if it is, then I have no choice but to model the stairs separately as well.

Non-ultra/max flagship or equivalent reco’s?

Currently on the iPhone 12 Pro, and while it does work, I kind of want a faster phone now.

1st issue is the battery. It just doesn’t last long. I have to use my powerbank 2x a day.

2nd issue is the speed, normal use is quite fine. It lags quite bad when I use apps during meetings or calls.

3rd issue is overheating. Background app refresh is closed, no apps open and randomly gets hot.

So now I’m on the lookout for a better phone. I want something faster, with a lot of battery, and decent camera.

Current top contenders for me are the Oppo X9 Pro, OnePlus15, Vivo X300 Pro, or waiting for the pre-selling promo’s of the next gen of these devices.

My max budget is in the price range of the phones mentioned above, but a cheaper alternative would be nice. Though tempting, I still can’t justify spending on the ultras yet.

The decent camera is a need for me now since I started making online courses and lessons. I initially saved up for a camera, but a 2-in-1 device might be better.

Suggestions?

DIM: Pro/Ultra Chinese Phones

Currently iPhone 12 ang gamit ko, and nakukumbinse ko na sarili ko na bumili ng new phone kasi:

  2. Madalas akong maubusan ng battery in less than a day, pati noong pinareplace ko siya (79%-100%). Nakakakaba pag na l-lowbat ako during hikes and travel kahit may dala kahit may dala akong powerbank haha.

  3. Lag pag gumagamit ako ng apps while in a video call or meeting since kulang ata ang 6GB ram for this.

  4. Software support for my phone is almost ending by 2026-2027.

  3. Mababawasan yung monthly budget ko for my wants, kasi doon ko kukunin yung for installment.

  4. Baka too much ang mga Pro and Ultra models and ok lang pala ang base model for my needs mentioned above

  5. iPhone nalang kasi naka iPhone ako atm. Pero di ako babad sa apple ecosystem. Only have the iPhone and iPad (which I don’t use often)

Like ISO’s, BEP’s, LOD, LOI, COBIE, Point Clouds and the like?

I’ve worked fulltime for 3 companies who have used revit now, but I feel like I’ve never really encountered any of them using the stuff I mentioned above.

Most of them still seem to be navigating the gist of BIM and it came to the point that I had to learn on my own via Youtube and Udemy, and I even had to teach my supervisors who studied BIM from an academy just to improve our efficiency.

I’m kind of getting tired of being stuck with just doing work without an actual process but I can’t even find a decent workplace to actually learn these.

For context, the companies I’ve worked with are from Singapore, Philippines, and Canada. The only one I’ve worked with who implemented the things I mentioned above was from Dubai, but I’ve only ever worked with them for 4 months just to support with 2 of their projects.
