[Basketball World News] In order to be able to start in the Summer League, [Jack] Kayil needs a "Letter of Clearance", which certifies that there are no further contractual obligations towards his ex-club…So far, the Letter of Clearance has not yet been received.
Article is in German, here’s the translation:
“After the announcement of the New York Summer League team, which also houses a former Ulmer in Pacome Dadiet, speculation about Jack Kayil was great. The German second-round pick (#39) is - as of now - not in the Summer League, which is considered an important opportunity for the freshly drafted Youngsters to collect some arguments for themselves on a big stage.
Medial, the non-consideration was quickly seen as an indication that the Knicks - according to previous reporting - had decided to ship Kayil to Europe for another year instead of granting him the NBA chances. Basketball-World.news cannot confirm these reports.
When asked by our editorial staff, Kayil's agent Milan Nikolic explained that the reason for the absence of the youngster was the still valid employment contract at Mega Basket. Kayil is still in the target of the Serbs until 2027 and had only come to Berlin on loan last season.
In order to be able to start in the Summer League, Kayil needs a so-called "Letter of Clearance", which certifies that there are no further contractual obligations towards his ex-club. As Nikolic made clear in June, Kayil's agreement with the ABA club included an explicit exit clause for the move to the USA.
The problem: So far, the "Letter of Clearance", which is prescribed by the world federation FIBA, has not yet been received. However, Nikolic is "99 percent" sure that the problem will still be solved and Kayil can move into the Summer League squad of the Knicks.
The official Summer League starts on the night of the 10th. July (German time) and extends over eleven days, on which all 30 teams play at least five games. The Knicks play their first game on day two against local rivals Brooklyn Nets (10. July, 24 hours).
However, it is unclear what Kayil's future looks like beyond the Summer League in New York. The native of Berlin himself was combative after the draft to accept the challenge of the NBA champion. According to reports, however, the franchise tends to send the 20-year-old back to Europe for further development.
The draft at the reigning champion could thus prove to be disadvantageous for the young German national player. Teams at the top of the league often prioritize the sporting status quo. Development time for the young is usually not provided for.
For Kayil, the decision about NBA or Europe also has massive financial implications. After all, he only has prospects for a million salary in the North American professional league, but his agent already ruled out the step to college in the interview. If the Knicks actually sent him back to Berlin, for example, the franchise would retain its NBA rights but not pay a salary. A way back to the NBA would then only be possible for Kayil through the Knicks (unless they trade his rights).
