i bought a Rivian R1S…. I ended up going used and got it 6months old with 7k miles and didn’t pay 110k. it was 110k new but I got it for 84k.
Still that’s a shit ton of money for a car we will drive 15k miles a year but it will be really nice for the family.
This is by far the most I have ever bought something for. I could have gone cheaper, maybe I should have. I stick out in my neighborhood like a sore thumb…
People keep asking me what my lease is or how much I put down or what my payments are… I paid cash and no one can believe it because we live such a modest lifestyle in a modest neighborhood in one of the smaller houses.
My wife and i are 39 and we could have bought a nice highlander new for 60k!
Earlier this month we had 950k in 401k, 1.1m in stocks. An 800k home at 2.35% with 150k left on mortgage. No other debt. 529’s are more than adequate… Still hitting our savings goals for the year but we needed to replace a car… And I was getting 110k in RSUs paid out (1year cliff).. I just felt like fuck it… nothing better to spend it on. i should enjoy some of this money since i have been investing for 10 years.
Were literally at Step 9 and I just felt like it would be super fun to get a nice EV for the family. And our solar panels are paid off so we have basically free charging.
So I still feel the guilt because everything about personal finance is save and invest, save and invest.
So should I be roasted or was this okay?
edit- I make 228k base and normally another 150k of bonus/rsu/espp.
our cost of living is about 10k/mo. Wife doesn’t work. Kids are 5 and 8
since a lot of the geysers are short walks but involve parking, should I book a tour bus so I don’t have to worry about parking?
is it worth it?
We have until July 3rd to vote! Watch the videos
im torn, they all have different values. The restaurant will have more investment than the other buildings and who doesn’t love good food!
I love Read Queen for the shopping and bookstore feel but we do have East Simpson…
The Arts center could be cool if the performances are worth seeing. I have not seen a show there and have lived here most my life.
What do you all think is the best for our community and tax dollars?

Denial — We need a new car. Wouldn’t it be cool if it was electric? Oh cool.. Rivian!… Wait, I would never pay $100k for a car... Let’s look get something else.
Anger — Why does nothing else come close to a Rivian? The EV9, Ex90, ioniq9, Q1… all lame. The R2 that isn’t even out yet. We need a 3rd row (or truck bed)… Just give me something that doesn’t suck!
Bargaining — Okay but if I skip the upgrades, that’s $10k back. Add inflation, gas savings, and — screw Elon, right? — Surely there are some incentives that make it worth it!?
Depression — Nope. $100k is too much. I need to stop thinking about this car. Who needs a car like that? I guess I’ll drive this gas car…
Acceptance — Oh they said they will knock off $500… guess I’ll look again.…
Well, I paid the $500 Reservation fee… I feel the dopamine….
Can’t believe I’m doing this...
This is the best car ever! can’t believe it was only $99,500. I got such a deal.
Has anyone found a way to get a deal? The color i want in Dual doesn't seem to be available locally so I have to pay 1600 to ship it in. The sales person keeps telling me my incentives are expiring or going away - 500 off, cash discount, costco discount. This may just be a sales tactic.
I really want to pay low 80's for a dual with vision + dark wheels but the price keeps going up. Maybe if I wait until July there will be more incentives to celebrate America or something...
I can make it work but don't feel good about paying full cost plus transfer fee for the car I want when there are alternatives coming on the market. I may wait for Subaru Getaway or Toyota Highlander EV or really just drop in size to the R2
What's the best way to get a good price? Is it settle for local inventory?
anyone using their R1 large battery pack to tow camper up i70? curious how your range does? if it works well instead of my Toyota tundra which gets 8mpg on a 38 gal tank?
I am agonizing if I can get away with the R2 and not an R1 with a 3rd row. It's just the R1 is so expensive and everything I read says it's not that much more of a quality upgrade as it's only 12" longer but 30k+ more. My kids are 5 & 8 and I would imagine more car pooling from now until they are 16.
Families, are you going to make due without the 3rd row?
I like Lucid's lower price point, focus on family, LiDar/Self Driving, and better ride experience but the company itself seems to be struggling.
What has your experience been?
With traffic and cold weather, I'm curious how your Rivian has done?
Do you have the large or max battery?
I live in Boulder and want to go Skiing in Beaver Creek (244 miles round trip) and wonder if I need the Max or the Large is enough? Do you charge when up there?
From what I understand you can see a 30% drop in range when it's cold- so 329*.7 = 230 range in the large battery. 410*.7 = 287 on a Max battery.
What is your experience taking the Riv Skiing?
trims, pricing, packages et?
Will Subaru announce anything or do we have to wait until October?
im considering getting a Rivian R1S but would prefer the lower price point of a Subaru.
curious how many R1’s are about to hit the pre-owned market.
sounds like its going to be common? we are going back and forth on R1 vs R2.. but an increase in used inventory might sway us.
I heard the assembly line is fired up but haven't heard of customer’s actually getting them.
if the plan is 25k R2’s this year, that’s ~640 R2s/week.
where are they?
Im a little tired of them marketing shit so far in the future. Now they are asking us to wait for Lidar, New AI software, future self driving, it keeps going. R2 Gen 1 is already deprecating with how things are going…
There is a disconnect between what they are doing and what they tell us is coming. end rant.
anyways, I would expect an early customer to be posting somewhere about their new R2…
is there any proof yet?
I have a 2018 Toyota Tundra. it has 10,200 lbs towing capacity which is amazing but only 1,220 lbs of payload.
i tow a Minnie Winnie 2100bh which has a 5500lbs GVWR and 500lbs tounge weight dry. Once I add the solar batteries, propane, gear, spare, I’m sure it’s a lot higher
So when I add my wife, two kids. dog, bikes, topper and tongue weight we are probably just over. I do have a distribution hitch which helps a bunch
Over all the truck does amazing. it feels a little scary if I start going over 70mph though.
issue is I constantly think about if I’m over payload and if my family is safe. I think about upgrading but a larger truck for my daily driver and occasional camping trip seems like overkill.
i would consider upgrading for an SUV with a 3rd row but i don't think i would be much better off.
does anyone else have a tundra and worry constantly? The V8 is great but the payload sucks!
Is this mostly because market demand or is there law of physics benefit to keeping EV's small?
We have a family and want a 3rd row and there are some small teslas and a Rivian. I know Subaru and Toyota are coming out with new 3rd row SUV's but this in a market where nearly every manufacture has a small EV out already.
I drove the EX-90 recently from Volvo and it just stunk compared to other EV's.
what are the odds I can find a Rivian near Denver? maybe by luck at the show room or service center? I’ll just drive by….
is it still too early?
I'm kidding but as an outsider, that profession looks exhausting.
