Quick report from today (14 Aug Friday )
Eurostar 3:12 train, we arrived at GdN and started lineup right at 2pm (family of 4)
Cleared customs and security by 3pm, It was just enough to catch some breath, grab a drink before getting on board.
Queue line is very hot, (i think today is the final day of heatwave, so your mileage will vary) which drains you quickly.
No need to line up for a specific departure time;
Find whichever line is shortest and stand there.
TL:DR; arrive 1 hour minimum early.
For past few weeks I have been researching for my Paris trip, and had few restaurants picked and bookmarked in G-Maps. Now several of my choices are marked suddenly as Temporarily Closed.. so i have to redo some of my day plans; They were not marked as such just last week.
Are these generally accurate? and can i assume they are closed for owner's vacances?
Ciao a tutti, one more time,
Another "horror" story I've been training(?) myself on is the bus fines.
It seems most people get fined for not validating their single use ticket on buses in particular, and the transport officers apparently do not care and fine you even if the validator is broken. And, they "appear" to target tourists specifically to enforce this fine.
I have absolutely no intention to pay hundreds of EUR in fines, especially as I am travelling with family, I am thinking of buying the 24H Pass ticket and carry it physically when I arrive at Termini.
My questions are:
- For 24H pass, is it correct I validate just once (at the beginning of first trip on bus or metro), or do I still need to validate for every single ride? I am hoping to just validate it once and forget it, I have enough to take care of already including 10yr old son
- My son is almost exactly 10 years old at the time of travel (born Aug 3, 2016, travelling on 19 Aug). Is he able to travel for free? (i.e. is it "up to and including 10 yrs" or "up to 9 years and 364 days" old?
- I am planning to first start using it around 6PM of 19-AUG. Then, am I correct to assume, i am clear to use the ticket freely, unlimited-ly, until 6PM of 20-AUG?
- Any other potential chance of fines I should be aware of while using 24H ticket?
Grazie mille!

Ciao a tutti,
I have booked the guided tour tickets from Vatican Museum official site on 20th of Aug morning, thinking I will have access to St Peters afterwards based on my old group tour experience - which, turns out to be, is not true and it looks like I CANNOT directly access St Peters after finishing Vatican Museum. (is this correct? cry....)
Which means I have to go around the walls and wait in line, etc, which i do not have time for in this particular trip because I have just this one day to spend in Rome. I am very frustrated as my family will miss out on St Peters at this rate.. (cry)
So my question is,
Instead of 20th, I am arriving at Rome the day before (19th) by 5PM and I can probably reach St Peters by 6pm. I can probably spend 2~2.5 hours if things work out.
Would it be feasible to go there around 6PM and at least see the gist of square and the basilica?
I am arriving CDG at 6:30pm with family, and need to head to La Defense for our hotel. 3 adults, 1 kid and two suitcases. Train is of course an option but trying to see if the convenience of car can make up the price difference.
Since the area is not part of fixed zone, any recommendation between regular taxi vs private transfer from travel agencies?
Both seem to be in similar price range (~90-100eur) and while I speak fairly OK French I am a bit concerned of being scammed…
OK so might sound like a weird question but here it is:
My kid is dual Korean-Canadian due to me being a canuck.
Based on my own experience dealing with names while growing up... at his birth, I wanted him to have an official legal English name. So I registered him in Korean documentation like "HONG BROWN GILDONG / 홍브라운길동" with 5 characters for his name in Korean.
This worked well and every official documentation so far on both countries have exact matching, correct spelling and spacing for English part: like HONG / BROWN GILDONG.
So on Canadian side, his Korean name is basically his Middle name.
Now that kid is halfway through Elementary here in Korea, he doesn't like his 5-character name showing up on roll calls and official documents and wants to get rid of 브라운 part, and just be 홍길동. He feels other kids make fun of him.
(On daily life it doesn't show as everyone just call him 길동 including schoolteachers... just it pops up in school paperwork, registration or any formal documents he need to deal with)
I kinda get it, and name change is not that much of a deal in Korea, but that will create technical mismatch between his names in two countries. My concern is whether this could impact his future paperwork in Canada or anywhere else in the world he may need to produce old documents, birth certificate and family document for whatever reason as a dual national.
Thankfully it's a middle name issue only.. so maybe I am way too overthinking this?
Would like to hear if anybody else had similar experience.
Thank you first everyone for the wealth of information in this sub!
Long story short, I have one day to spend starting from Florence to Rome via Pisa in mid-August, taking 3 family members (wife + kid + MIL) around on my own.
The purpose of Pisa is really just to see the tower and have my family take boatload of touristy pictures that they can put up on their social media. Nothing in depth needed.
So my current plan is:
- Checkout hotel and leave Florence ~8 AM
- Arrive Pisa ~10 AM, do tourity stuff + lunch
- Leave Pisa ~ 2 PM
- Arrive Rome by ~6 PM, check in hotel, and have some time to do a evening stroll in the city
Planning with G-Maps, seems like i can either do Pisa->Firenze->Roma backtrack route for little less than 3 hours, or do a seaside route by either Frecciabianca or InterCity that starts from Pisa and follows the coastline to Roma that takes 3 hours or maybe just little more.
Since time difference appears manageable even with some buffer, if the seaside route is more memorable in terms of sightseeing, this may be a better choice for the family memories.
Which route would you recommend?
Time has come to get new shoes for X5.
But.. as with every budget-conscious owner of a luxury premium SUV 😂😂😂😂😂, I had to look for some ways to save money.
Mine came with 22" staggered setup, 275 in front and 315 on the back. For this size combo, there were really only 3 options available here (S. Korea) - Continental, Michelin and Hankook.
Continental and Michelin came out to about around $2,500-$3,000 USD for a fresh set and had like 2 month special order period as the local shops didn't have stock.
Hankook, being the local manufacturing brand here, was little bit over ~$1,000 USD with correct size and delivery in 2 weeks, fresh made from factory, with 1 year damage protection and interest free installment... So decided to pull the trigger and got them installed. So far ran about 3,000 km since change.
So in summary: Tire has a very soft ride, which I can describe as like riding your car on top of a yoga mat. Compared to the much harder, sportier original Continental OEM tire, this one feels like driving a .. Lexus. Or.. somewhat similar to driving with a winter tire.
Can be either a pro or con depending on your style of X5 driving...
If you like sporty, that "tight" feeling and love to maximise the responsiveness X5, this tire will almost halve that feeling. Save up some more and go with something like P-Zero.
On the other hand, if your X5 is to ferry your family and parents around and you enjoy smooth comfortable ride, with just occasional sporty rev run, this is an excellent shoes for your car especially with hybrid owners like me who enjoy quite electric mode. Road noise is very little.
TL:DR - Great value tire from a solid manufacturer, very comfort-focused and soft ride. Not sporty at all. Great for family haul or daily driving, maybe not so much for dad/mom who likes to hit that curve ahead.
I have two distribution layer network consisting of EX4300 in VC, 2 or 3 units per VC.
Two sets of VC consists one VRRP router, runs its own OSPF area and PIM-Sparse for about 1000 IP cameras each. The network consists of about ~ 200 OSPF routes, ~2,000 end devices (ARP entries), ~2,000 PIM routes/IGMP groups, ~60 VLANs, and ~5Gbps traffic flows through each layer at any given time.
Technically it should be well within the hardware specification of the switch, but I find the switches are sluggish when I connect to SSH, and users also complain (little bit, not much) about random slow network response especially during the day when there are most users.
I hooked up an NMS (Zabbix) and monitored the switches for past few months, and the CPU of main routing engine is almost constantly at 80%+ in both cases. Spikes very often to 100%.
I am thinking, maybe 4300s are not meant to be used as a full blown router for this kind of setup.. but maybe I could be missing something and just some optimisation is needed? I stormed my brain hard digging through every config elements but cannot find anything useful that seem to reduce the load in any meaningful way.
I'd love to hear any other real world experiences with EX4300s in the field.
Just curious as X5 is a first car I ever had with a HUD.
What i mean by “see” is not the HUD itself.
Display itself has no problem and it is clearly visible. No fuzziness or anything like that, it looks and works fine.
But when my eyes are looking at the road for driving, the HUD isn’t really part of my focused view, which means I need to refocus my eyes on the HUD to actually read the information which seem to kinda defeats the purpose of HUD for me. Most of the times my eyes do not actually “see” HUD while I am driving.
I do wear glasses as I have fairly very bad eyesight, but my corrected vision is excellent and have no trouble seeing.
I sort of imagined how fighter jets and modern airliners have HUD that is clearly overlayed on the scenery.
Want to know if this is normal or not..? 😅
In case anyone wanted to know... (because I did lol)
Got into world of roadbike, one for me, one for little boy. XS and S size (i am a small guy too)
Can't spend money right now for a proper bike carrier, so I'm just shoving them in for a bike trip haha
Remove the front wheels, then fold the back seat (larger side).
2 bike can fit reasonably well with a room for one passenger on the back.
Lowering the saddle will also help to fit more smoothlly. I am short enough that my current saddle height can fit in without lowering
Thick rubber mat will help a lot because the frames and pedals will make a LOT of scratch on the floor when you put them in our out.
I got tired of guessing what a cable can and cannot do, so I looked around and got this unit as recommendation from this subreddit.
And wow, I sorted out all the cables by its feature and it feels sooo good. Turns out only 1 out of all my cables have eMarker…
The unit is very small and light, straightforward and simple. Not cheap for sure but I think well worth it for anyone more invested in cable quality.
*EDIT: Not only it tests USB-C to C but also USB-A to C, Mini B, Micro B 2.0/3.0 and even Apple lightning cable.
I always watch any shows with subtitles on (partly since I can only watch it after kid is asleep and need to keep the volumne down...) and in early season I remember that signature sentence was always transcribed as Tyger instead of Tiger.
Later on I think it turned into Tiger.
I have never seen Tiger spelled as Tyger before this show so I am curious why it was written that way.
Movie is Margin Call (2011), a superb movie about the 2008 financial crisis.
After watching Mentalist, I can only see his scenes in this movie as Patrick taking a break from FBI and doing a side gig to raise the kid....lol
It's an excellent movie if you haven't watched it, highly recommended. I can watch the climax scene over and over again and it's always chilling.
