I am 26F. I have a master’s degree from nust. I used to live abroad with my family but due to some financial difficulties in coronavirus we moved back in 2020 to Pakistan. He also revealed that he had previously been engaged, but that engagement had ended for some reason. None of these things were disclosed to me before the marriage; he only told me everything after the wedding that too after consummating marriage.
After revealing all of this, he started subjecting me to domestic violence. He demanded that I bring money from my family, otherwise he would divorce me. When I refused, he began selling my gold, which had been given to me as Haq Mehr, because he needed money to buy drugs.
I tried very hard to support him and convince him to quit drugs and change his life, but nothing worked. Throughout all of this, his family supported him and blamed me, saying that it was my fault and that I caused him stress, which was why he used drugs. However, he himself told me that he had been using drugs for the past 16 years and that he used to visit other women as well. He would stay out of the house all night, and whenever I questioned him, he would accuse me of being suspicious, check my phone, and mentally torture me.
Eventually, his behavior became so extreme that he physically assaulted me and smashed the windows and other household items. At that point, his family admitted him to a rehabilitation center because they were no longer able to handle him. They had actually sent him to rehab before our marriage as well. After spending four months there, he had recovered and remained stable for about a year, which is why they decided to send him to rehab again.
I returned to my parents’ house and finally told them everything. They had no idea what I had been going through because I rarely visited them and always pretended that I was very happy.
Now my family wants me to become independent and move abroad for further studies or job. I am so done with life and everything i just don’t know what to do?
