Selling a car privately
Hi, I’m selling my car privately for the first time and was wondering how to create a bill of sale. Should I just make one on regular paper, or is there a specific form I should use from Service Ontario?
Thanks

So for example, I have a truck and am ready for a sedan. I would love to find a person out there who has a sedan and needs/want a truck. I have a 92 F150. She isn't 100% perfect but I've done a lot to keep her running since I first got her. I know I likely wouldn't get an AMAZING car but she's too big for day to day city life.
I have a Pontiac 2010 G6 base model with a 170000k miles on it. It has some hail damage but outside of that there isn’t any problems with it. I know it’s not going to be worth a lot but I’m looking to find a price to at least sell it for that’s reasonable so I can get a new car to come with me to college. If you have any ideas please let me know.
I recently bought a truck and I want to sell my sedan, where is the best places to put it? I’ve only posted it on Marketplace.
Hey folks,
I am considering selling my 2023 Toyota Corolla CL… ~38,000 km and one minor mark.
The dealership appraised it for $19-$20k (CAD) this morning, and are eager to buy it. Furthermore, I’m leaning towards staying with them when I lease my next vehicle (current one is financed). Right now, I am making bi monthly payments on a loan that has ~$3500 left (with a higher interest).
My brother has advised me to hold onto my car until the loan is paid off (so ~2.5 years). However I know it’s not the car for me long term and I can handle eating the loan.
I’m fine driving it and it is in good shape, but I’m interested in something a bit nicer. The car selection isn’t the best, but there are cars I’d be cool with leasing for 2-3 years.
What should I do?
I’m 19 I live Mn and I do tower construction and stuff and I travel and this is my third accident and my insurance is 530 and I cannot afford it I can’t do it anymore I want a beat up truck I rather I sell it and give it to people who actually need it. What’s yall advice
I've been trying to sell my car because I barely drive it. I've put maybe 300 miles on it in the last three months, compared to my other car that I drive around 1,200 miles a month.
I checked KBB, and the private-party value was around $9,000. A dealership offered me $5,000, or $6,000 if I put it toward another car. I figured I'd list it for $4,500 and let it go quickly. I took the time to write a detailed description, listed the recent repairs, included the VIN, and was completely upfront about the car.
It's been a week. My DMs are full, but apparently nobody actually wants to buy the damn thing. It's nothing but, "Would you take $700?" "Can I have it for free?" "I'm a single mom/dad and I really need a car." "Would you take $2,000?"
Then people come to look at it and turn into professional tire kickers. One middle-aged guy seriously told me he couldn't pay more than $1,000 because "the engine is going to blow up within a week." Another guy's girlfriend's dad's uncle is apparently a mechanic, so apparently that qualifies him to diagnose the car from home.
Then there are the trade offers: non-running cars, cars that need thousands in repairs, or some absolute shitbox that's five miles from death's door.
The funniest part is that the car has no issues. It's up to date on maintenance, and I'm literally a mechanic. I do my own work, so it doesn't have a huge repair history because I don't take it to a shop for every little thing. The only real documentation is state inspection-related stuff I can't do myself.
I've even had someone drive it for five minutes and tell me the engine was knocking and the transmission was slipping. At this point, I'm starting to wonder if people are looking at the same car I am. 😂
I listed a mechanically sound car for $4,500 because I wanted a quick, fair sale, and somehow I'm getting treated like I'm trying to sell a blown-up junkyard special.
Edit/ update
I waa looking for teens that needed a first car that's why I priced it cheap since it was my first car after posting this i got a message from a this 16yo asking if she could see the car he came to my job with his dad looked at i put it on the lift for him let him test drive it we agreed on 3,500 I got it for 4,500 4 years ago with 50k on it lady was selling it because it needed a thousand dollars worth of work i fixed it for 500 I've put 48k miles on it he's coming back Monday with the money and he's dad is trailering it home since there live 20 miles away and the kid has a permit
I’m selling a vehicle privately in the Raleigh area. I have a serious potential buyer who wants to pay in cash. The problem is that he is only available to meet on Sunday evening, when the banks will be closed.
How would you recommend verifying that the cash is legitimate before I hand over the title and vehicle?
I purchased a counterfeit-detection pen, but the reviews are mixed regarding how reliable they are. I’d prefer not to reschedule the sale if there’s a safe way to verify the cash on Sunday.
Any suggestions or experience with this?
Transmission gave up on me while driving on the freeway. Would cost me 4-6k to fix it up. Looked around called places and they only offered $400-500. Went with Peddle. Got the quote, then agreed to it cuz it was $1900 vs $500. Scheduled for it to be picked up from 11-3pm. I ended up seeing tow truck at 1pm. Took my plates off, signed my title away. Told me to either drop off top part of title to dmv or can do it online for transfer or release of liability. took about 10 minutes. Didn’t give me cash he gave me a check. Did a mobile deposit on my PayPal app. I received my check in 5 minutes. Cash all in my account. What a great experience I had with peddle. definitely recommend. Only if you have cars 2015 and above is worth selling I think anything below that year you’ll only get 300-500 max. Goodluck ! Lmk if you have questions.
My mom bought a 1986 Camaro Z28 brand new a loooonnngggg time ago. Back in 2000 she stopped using it as her daily, then it was on and off sitting not being driven until 2005. The last time I can recall it being fuly started was around the 2010’s. My mom passed away a few years ago and the car has since been given to me. Ive been having an internal battle about keeping (attempting restoration) or just getting rid of it.
Ive decided to get rid of it. I need advice on a price point or if it even makes sense to try and get more than junk value. It was kept outside so its been weathered over the years.
Looking for realistic ideas/prices.
Thank you all in advance because im lost.
Hello everyone! I currently own a 2022 GR Supra 2.0 with a modified wing, everything else stock. I bought the car back in October of 2025 from Carmax for $44k, but it was close to $48k after tax, title, and warranty. I understand from hindsight that I might've overpaid on the car. I checked AutoTempest and it was above the line when compared to all 2.0s sold over the years but it was right on the line when filtered for cars sold under 20k miles. When I bought it, the odometer was sitting at ~11.5k. It now stands at close to 17k. I've been dailying it as my primary source of transportation ever since.
The main issue currently is that I will be studying abroad for two semesters as a university exchange student in Japan. The car will be in storage for close to a whole year. I am seriously considering selling the car to not take the deprecation hit. I can also get my Carmax Carcare refunded from an initial purchase of ~$1,875, when prorated, getting back ~1,675. So a $200 loss wasn't as bad as I thought.
I did an online quote from Carmax and they gave me a $38,500 offer. With the warranty refunded, I will get back ~40k. I plan on going into Carmax before I leave for them to evaluate it physically. I also checked Carvana but they lowballed me even more. I was also thinking of taking the car to the local Toyota dealership but I'm thinking there is no merit because they will lowball me even more. I just want to get an outside opinion on my predicament because I bought the car before I got this two semester exchange. If I had knew I was going to be overseas for close to a year, I wouldn't had bought this car.
Thank you!
Edit: The car was paid in cash and nothing is owed btw.
Trying to sell my 09 sierra.
Issue is my friend signed for me to get it out of the lot. Now it’s paid and they lost title.
How can I still sell?
They just ordered a new one but afraid I can’t wait to sell since I’m off to another state in a couple weeks and really need the money.
Already received multiple offers but not sure what to do.
Also just smogged the truck about 2 weeks ago. So it’s ready to go.
Thank you.
sale cancelled and title ruined. now I need to pay to order a new copy of the title and wait another few weeks to sell the car
A couple years back i bought a car (private party) with a local bank auto loan. I purchased the car but it immediately blew up so i never registered it. Meaning that there was never a lien on my title and the bank never has had my title. I ended up not paying the loan payments for 3 months and they charged it off as (bad credit) I havnt heard from them in over a year (with no attempts to repo, and no calls from any debt collectors) My question is, if i go and register the car now that i got it fixed, will there still be a lien put on the car, or will it be lien free (meaning i can go sell it and keep the money?)
EDIT: I LIVE IN IOWA (IF THAT HELPS AT ALL)

Have a 2016 chevy colorado (I think it's a work truck, it is the two door with two sad excuses for seats in the back).
It has 140k miles on it. Was a work truck for the company is work at for about 3 years, I bought it and the transmission gave out after 8 months. Engine seems to run fine and the body is fine but covered in scratches and small dents from years of being used by warranty guys at work.
It has been sitting in my driveway for about 4 months and a guy left a note on it to buy it. Told him about the Trans and he offered me 1k for it. I told him $1.8k for it and he agreed immediately and is wanting to meet up ASAP to get it.
Am I getting the wool pulled over my eyes? It just seems like he agreed too fast, he didint fight or anything. I'm not delusional enough to think I could sell it for 5k or anything but im not exactly looking to leave money on the table either. Just wanted some opnions
Hello im heading to NYC for 2 weeks, ive hit hard times and need the most cost-effective way to have a place to stay and transportation when I need it to drive 350 miles to NC to see my friend. Im looking to buy a cheap SUV/van to live in for my stay and then sell at the end. I know that its pointless to have a vehicle in the city, I have no intent to use it for that.
I need to confirm logistics of doing so. Im aware of needing tags and auto insurance. From what ive read online insurance can be registered at my friends address. And I can obtain an in-transit tag permit as the current vehicle ive found is a private seller.
Can anyone offer advice?
has anyone else had problems with friends/family after selling their cars?
So I was looking on Facebook marketplace and I saw this 2015 Chevrolet Cruze so I sent a message that I was interested and then he sent me his number so I texted that if I could get the VIN number and he said he’ll text me it in an hour. Hour goes by and nothing so I called him and he said he’ll text me it. Again nothing. So I called him again and asked him for the VIN number again and he just starts asking me when I want to come test drive it and if I’m interested in other cars he has but I wanted the VIN number first and then he said he’ll text it and the address. His English isn’t very good and I could’ve swore he was talking in French. It’s the next morning and still nothing. I decided to look on Facebook marketplace again and I noticed the same car I was looking at that had the same photos listed by someone else with a different city on it. The reviews say he’s good but it’s probably BS. Now I’m very suspicious and it’s making me uncomfortable. I should probably look elsewhere right? Plus this is in Michigan.
My mom never received the title for her car. It's paid in full and in her name but the financial institution she was using was bought out by someone else. She bought the car over 20 years ago. I tried contacting the business that bought out her financial institution.. they don't have any records from 20 years ago. The dol says it's now a civil issue and I need to contact a court...
I've tried contacting my local court and have received no response. I'm at my wits end here and have no idea what to do.
Any advice is appreciated.
