Why do you think folk are more accepting toward English-dubbed voiceovers for video games than other mediums?

In the world of live-action tv/film, you get laughed at if you willingly watch foreign stuff in anything but the original languages of the actors on screen. And with animation, especially Japanese produced stuff, there's forever been the "sub vs dub" debate. But with games... it's only a game here and there where I see people very loudly championing for the original actors and performances. We largely just deem English the universal way to experience characters and worlds even if it's not the native one that the developers maybe first envisioned with it.

There's some major contrasts to that, like the Yakuza franchise. But even outside of Japanese, a lot of people play things like the Metro games in English. It's largely about Japanese vs English when it comes to video games just because of the huge volume of games they produce, but nowadays even Korean and Chinese titles are becoming more popular. I mean, all these gacha games that MiHoYo makes like Genshin and ZZZ are natively voiced in Chinese, but I almost only see gameplay clips and people sharing stuff in English.

This isn't like a "dubs are bad" discussion I'm trying to make. It's just interesting how typically if you're passionate about media that's foreign when it comes to shows and movies, you probably eventually engage with it much more in it's native language. But with games, even passionate gamers still seem mostly prone to just playing all things in English or whatever language reflects their own.

Again, it's not a matter of one being better or being wrong, etc. It's just an observation and something I've wondered.

When is it that you realize you want to write about a game?

This is a dilemma I've come to face, and partially why I've always struggled to put out things consistently. I struggle to find the inspiration while I'm playing a game that gives me a thesis to try and construct. I feel like it's easy to fall back on an in-depth review, even if there's something much more interesting I could be offering to the discussion. So I try and find a topic around a game that feels more abstract or specific, like many creators that inspire myself. I also feel that falling back on broad topics like a review can make it easy to just try and write about any game you play and not necessarily ones that really leave a noteworthy impression.

So, for y'all, where do you tend to find that? Maybe more specifically, how do you get better at recognizing and honing in on it?

Do you regret not waiting for Early Access titles to go 1.0 before first playing?

To preface, I don't play EA titles too much if ever. It's a combination of just growing up with games that were not put out like that, and also because I get this feeling like if I do play and like something EA I'll end up regretting that I didn't wait to play ALL of it after 1.0 releases and get possibly a much stronger experience. Especially if it's something like Baldur's Gate 3 where it's extremely dense and I might not necessarily want to pump another 100+ hours into it ever or at least not for a good while.

That being said, I'm trying to broaden my horizons and try to understand where the opposition comes from. So, for y'all, have you ever regretted playing games while still in EA, or do you not hesitate when you see that as part of how a game's released?

How to use Steam Controller?

This applies for Steam Deck controls basically as well but I just got one and I wanted to see if I could utilize it's functionality like trackpads at all with it. There's some controller layouts on Steam that others have made but when I open up BB Launcher through steam it won't show any of that. It plays fine. All the rest of my controls are working, just not some of those other extra buttons. Don't know if that's just not possible or if I'm maybe doing something wrong.

Should I just wait and start the Rance series when it comes to Steam at this point?

I know that big fans will probably no doubt say "just play it now!" but hear me out. Online buddy of mine has championed Rance forever and ever and has been trying to put me on it but then the announcement that it was coming to Steam dropped and I kind of felt like it was a sign that this year I should finally play it and I'd do so when 01+02 came to Steam. Well... we're 5 months past the announcement with almost nothing except little tweets here and there from Kagura Games. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Nobody ever thought this game series would get approved by Steam to begin with. But I kind of figured by now we'd have a release date window or something.

I'm holding off because honestly because I just like the idea of owning all of the series in my Steam library. That, and I figured that they'd incrementally release and that'd make it where I'd get to go through the series at a potentially slower pace and take breaks until the next one drops ya know. Achievements are fun too and it'd be cool if the Steam versions have it.

On one hand, it could just randomly drop next week. But also I'm gonna be mad at myself if it takes until like the end of 2026 to get 01+02 on Steam and I just held off for so long. What do y'all think? Should I just say screw it and just buy it off of Mangagamer or GOG?

Steam Controller gripsense sensitivity?

Just got my Steam Controller delivered today and super excited to mess around with it. One thing though that I've been struggling to find in any of the settings is adjusting the capacitive sensor sensitivity. I could've sworn I saw a video where somebody was showing on screen how you can adjust this. Essentially so that you minimize, or increase, the amount that your hand has to move so that it activates. Has anyone been able to find this anywhere?

I hate to use the word "aspiring" but I guess I'm an amateur voice actor. It's just a personal thing for me. I don't book gigs or have a reel, but I try and practice my acting. I find that studying and attempting to mimic performances I admire, and then take a step farther and do it in my own way allows me to hone techniques. One of those admirable performances, of course, being Michael Bell as Raziel. So I wanted to try my hand at doing a piece from Legacy of Kain.

I'd love feedback! I don't record a lot because I don't feel a lot of it's worthy of sharing. But I'm trying to build more confidence in doing it.

I was inspired by a video recently posted by a youtuber, 8bitjoystick, where his answer to video game backlogs and choice paralysis was to, instead of picking just one from a plethora, choose three games and isolate them. Then, just essentially look at those picked games and commit to one until you knock out all three in whichever order.

I liked the concept, so I'm trying it. But I was brainstorming what I could do for the three choices. I could just pick three random games, but I feel having some sort of significance for each one makes it more interesting and easier. For example, option 1 is a new game this year or last, option 2 is a replay of something I want to revisit, and option 3 is maybe something critically acclaimed that I hadn't gotten to yet. The idea is that they each scratch a different itch for me.

I'm not 100% on that though so I'd like to see what some of y'all might suggest, or how you would do it if it was your own.

For a good while now, it really feels like my Twitter is just completely extinct from all of my followers and mutuals. I get nearly no organic feedback or likes ever anymore. I'm not a huge account with insane follower numbers. Just a relatively moderate 700+, but enough that I feel like I shouldn't be getting on average 0 likes 0 replies on about everything. The only engagement I ever am able to make these days is when I reply to someone else's tweet.

I've tested my account on sites that check if you have any sort of ban placed on it, for however reliable they are, and I get all green. But it seems like my account was growing for some time and then just stalled completely. It's not that I have some complex that my tweets should all be viral and it makes no sense. But a lot of my following is, naturally, due to shared interests and it's strange that suddenly absolutely none of them interact with my posts anymore.

Being brutally honest with myself, it could just be that my account is super uninteresting these days. But I still relatively do what I've always gained followers by doing so... idk. Nowadays it feels so much like my Twitter is just a private blog to type out stuff pertaining to my interests. Of all the social media platforms I do still partake in and consistently post on, Twitter is the only one that I've been failing to get engagement with nowadays.

I get this feeling it's because the site is trying to push me to pay for premium since you get "boosted replies."
