I randomly sampled 10,000 trips weighted by population density. I used the Modemix navigation algorithm to find two routes:
Biking made transit 52% faster. What is most surprising to me is how cheaply these savings can be achieved. Achieving a 52% speed up in travel times via new transit infrastructure would cost us billions and take decades of construction. Bikes are so efficient. I love bikes!!!!

Why is there no map for where it's safe and where it's unsafe to bike? Everyone knows about Sunset Dunes, JFK, the Wiggle, etc. But what about the rest of the city? The cycling layer on Google Maps looks like this:

I can't get a sense of where the safe bikeways are. I just see a chaos of green lines. Google simply takes data directly from the cities and puts them on a map. The result feels fragmented and incohesive.
I believe that the solution must leverage local knowledge and wisdom of the crowds. A really cool experiment was run on Reddit called r/place. Strangers fought pixel-by-pixel to create collaborative art:
Google's bike data isn't curated. It feels robotic and lifeless. r/place is human and full of life. So what if we apply this idea to bike safety?
To experiment with this, I've created a canvas for us. The canvas lives on a map. Anyone can place pixels to mark their opinion on bike safety for a given street. So far, it looks like this:
Crowdsourced bikeways for San Francisco
Like r/place, the map updates in real time as users place tiles. The city's bike network is already starting to reveal itself. It's definitively different than Google's bikeways layer. It feels more human and curated. A network is forming, instead of weird fragments of infrastructure.

I recommend using a cheap bike. I bought this bike used for $40. Even if the bike got stolen when I was gone, it'd be cheaper than an Uber lmao
