Am I wrong for defending women outside of the feminist umbrella?

When I posted about that harassment incident in Algeria, I said I am against feminism, but as a society, we have to stand up and put a stop to this behavior. The reaction in the comments surprised me: people claimed I was contradicting myself, as if defending a woman means you automatically have to endorse a specific ideology.

I am against feminism because its frameworks, roots, and values do not align with my culture, my traditions, or my religion here in Algeria. But rejecting an ideology does not mean turning a blind eye to injustice. Our society has its own deep rooted values of honor, respect, and protecting one another.

Why have we reached a point where caring about basic human safety requires buying into an imported political label? Defending women from abuse shouldn't require a membership card it just requires a conscience.

Why do atheists mock the religion of Islam, even though they know that Algerian law punishes this act?

Are we actually in love, or are we just in love with how they make us feel?

We throw the word love around so easily, but if you strip away the romance, a lot of what we call love is actually just a quiet form of ego.

When we need someone to constantly look at us and validate us, we end up judging their every move based on our own rules. We want them to fit into our script. That constant expectation isn't actually affection it’s a subtle kind of pressure or control over the other person. And for us, it's just a narcissistic loop where we want the world to revolve around our emotional needs.

We tell ourselves we are hurt because we care about their happiness, but deep down, most of the time we are just mad because we aren't getting what we want. We write a whole movie in our heads and neglect our own real desires just to chase that validation. If you genuinely love someone, their random actions, moods, or lack of attention shouldn't completely destroy your inner feeling toward them. Real love doesn't keep a ledger of what you did for me today.

Honestly speaking, if everything changed tomorrow, or if the person you love completely shifted, would you still love them, or does your love depend entirely on what they give you?

Let's talk about "المعريفة" (Nepotism) Is it really an inescapable reality for us?

We’ve all heard or even said phrases like "بلاد المعريفة" more times than we can count.

In Algeria, nepotism, favoritism, and relying on personal connections often feel like the default operating system for everything: getting a job, securing a document, finding a spot in a hospital, or even sorting out bureaucratic paperwork. It is so deeply woven into our daily lives that it’s easy to feel like everyone participates in it, or at least benefits from it at some point.

Are we all bound to practice nepotism at least once in our lives? Is it an absolute inevitability of living in our society, or is it a choice we can actually opt out of?

I want to hear from you guys:

Have you managed to build a career or get things done purely on merit without ever playing the maarifah card?

Or is refusing to use connections in Algeria just shooting yourself in the foot?

Drop your thoughts below. Let’s debate

Why catching street gangsters on camera won't stop the next generation of crime

Lately, we’ve seen a big development in how Algerian police handle street gangsters. But let's be real about what is actually happening.

We see videos circulating online of citizens filming street thugs, and soon after, the police track them down and send them straight to jail. While it feels good to see quick justice, do you really think this will stop crime or criminals? I don't think so.

The Outdated Gang Mindset

Right now, our local criminal mindset is practically stuck in 2009.

Their main "weapons" are still mostly knives or bare hands.

They operate openly in the streets, often not caring about their actions until they realize someone is filming or the police are watching.

However, as police crackdowns increase, these street thugs are going to adapt. They will quickly realize that doing crimes out in the open in front of everyone gets you caught immediately.

What Comes Next? The Organized Crime Evolution

When street-level visibility becomes too dangerous, criminals don't just quit they evolve.

The new generation of gangs will start paying much more attention to how they organize their criminal activities and how they handle their internal wars. Jailing individual thugs will never stop crime if we leave the root causes untouched. As long as we keep creating the exact same environment and social circumstances that breed criminals, they will keep coming back only this time, they will be smarter and much more organized.

The French Example: A Warning

Look at what happened in France over the years.

France massively increased police presence, flooded tough suburban neighborhoods (banlieues) with law enforcement, and handed out harsh prison sentences.

Did it stop crime? No.

Instead, it pushed petty street crime into highly structured, mafia-style drug networks. Gangs stopped fighting openly with knives in broad daylight and instead built complex logistical supply chains, used encrypted apps, and professionalized their operations.

Prisons didn't deter criminals there; they often became networking hubs where small-time offenders graduated into hardened, organized criminals.

The Real Bottom Line

Locking people up is a necessary band-aid, but it is not a cure. If we want to actually stop crime, police work needs to be paired with real economic opportunities, fixing neglected neighborhoods, and changing the environment that creates criminals in the first place.

Otherwise, we are just trading chaotic street thugs for organized criminal syndicates.

Living in a block vs. having a private outdoor space, anyone else feel like we missed out on this?

I've seen this reel and I imagined someone having a small, private outdoor space right outside their house. To some, it might just look like a simple piece of empty ground, but if you really think about it, it’s a massive privilege especially for kids. It gives them a safe, private open air area to do activities, play, and just move around freely in ways you simply cannot do inside an apartment.

Coming from someone who has lived their whole life in an apartment block, where your options are strictly inside the home or out on the street I feel like having that private transition space would have been incredible growing up.

Most of us raised in blocks never had that luxury. For those of you who did grow up with a private outdoor space, how much of a difference did it make? And for those who didn't, do you feel like it's one of those hidden things that shapes your childhood differently? What do you guys think?
