How often do predoctoral research positions convert into PhD programs (USA vs Europe) in STEM?

I've noticed that a few seniors from my college joined predoctoral research positions in the US or Europe. Some of them eventually continued into a PhD at the same institution/lab, while others joined PhD programs elsewhere.

I'm curious about how this works in practice.

- How common is it for a predoctoral position to convert into a PhD in the same lab or university?

- Is there any rough conversion rate in the USA versus Europe, or does it vary too much to estimate?

- Is the conversion usually an expectation from the start, or is it highly competitive?

- For those who have gone through this route, do you think it was worth it compared with applying directly to PhD programs?

Constant anxiety...Any advice?

I am doing my master's thesis with really tight deadlines, and I feel anxious almost all the time. I don't procrastinate much, but I constantly feel like I'm falling behind and guilty whenever I'm not working.

I even wake up after about 6 hours of sleep with anxiety, thinking about my thesis.

Has anyone been through this? Did any supplements, exercises, or other habits genuinely help reduce the anxiety?

How do I improve my figure preparation skills for presentations? Please help me..😩

I am from stem. My supervisor has told me three times over three presentations that I need to work on my figure preparation skills for the literature review presentations but he is not directing me towards...where I am going wrong or what is he exactly expecting from me. It's not like I am not trying to improve and I also know that I need to learn to figure out such things on my own, but it would have been better with a little direction. Please let me know what techniques or tools you use for figure preparation or any tip to improve my literature review presentations...

Is reproducing analyses from published papers a good way to learn bioinformatics?

I have recently started learning bioinformatics as I am going to use it in my master's thesis. I know intermediate level of python and linux. I've been reading research papers in areas that interest me (mostly single-cell transcriptomics and computational biology).

My idea is to download the raw or processed datasets provided by the authors (from GEO, supplementary files, etc.) and then try to reproduce their analyses and figures by following the methods described in the paper....to understand biological question and the computational workflow rather than just following tutorials.

Is this a good way to learn bioinformatics?

How closely should I try to reproduce the published results?

How much time should be spent on reproducing existing work versus doing independent exploratory analyses?

Or is this not the right way to proceed and I can do something better to learn?

I feel sooo stuuupiiiddd

I am a final year masters student. My masters thesis is going to be in bioinformatics. My thesis supervisor sent me a few research papers along with a research proposal and told me that I should read them and dig out other research papers of my interest, make a state of art and present it in the lab meeting which was day before yesterday(it didnt went well). Today he called me to meet in his office and for 40 mins he explained me how I am actually supposed to dig out papers of my interest, how my state of art should have fallen under the three categories mentioned in the research proposal he mailed me earlier. What made me feel stupid is that how he was explaining me the most basic things(things which we were taught in the 2nd year of bachelors)....is this the kind of image he has of me in his mind...that I am so unaware of the most basic things! He wasn't rude or impolite cause I already told him that I have severe anxiety issues and he has clearly mentioned that he doesn't wants to be responsible for someone's bad mental health, otherwise i think he would have been more strict with me. I feel like banging my head on the wall right now!

Feeling lost about the future..

I am a final year master's student, this year I'll be working on my thesis and will graduate next year. My thesis is going to be in the field of bioinfo. I was not doing mentally very well during my initial academic years, so my GPA is not that good, and as far as I know, getting a job in academia is very tough because of the competition, and I feel like I don't stand a chance there. So, the other thing I am left with is industry and scientific writing. I am planning to do a PhD. Should I freelance to get into scientific writing, or is there any online course that I can take to learn it and then gain experience? It would be very helpful if people working in scientific writing could give me some insights. Will scientific writers be replaced by AI in the future? Or is there any other thing that I can do to avoid unemployment after a PhD? I know this post might sound a little vague, but all these things have been storming around in my head for the last few days.

I studied everything before the exam, revised everything 5 times, I am not overexaggerating...yes 5 times. Went to give my exam next morning and went blank, wasn't able to write anything for about 15 mins, my hands were shaking. I score low despite studying, it happens every time. This is hampering my life now. When I tell this thing to people around me they just think that I am giving an execuse for being lazy.
