Rejection sensitivity and socio-sexual expectations

I wanna know if anyone here has had similar experiences:

In my senior year of college, I was infatuated with a friend of mine. He and I had been hooking up for a couple months and I believed that what I felt was genuine affection. I learned later that I am really sensitive to any sort of rejection--even perceived rejection. I take it way too hard and personally, and it becomes an intrusive thought for the rest of my life. (OCD is fun, eh?) I also later learned that I just enjoy spending time with people. You might even say that quality time is my love language.

One day, I went to support him at a campus bench-press competition. I couldn't care less about bench-pressing. I didn't care about the crowd of muscular, "conventionally attractive" men around me. I just wanted to convince my friend to agree to spend more time with me.

Before he went out, I casually asked him if he'd like to do something this weekend and, annoyed, he pointed out this tall, ripped Adonis of a man and said something along the lines of, "Why don't you ask him?"

Well, I actually knew the Adonis guy already. He and I were on the residence hall advisory board together.

I was crushed and FUMING. So, I went straight up to "Adonis" and asked if he had any plans that night. He told me where he was going to be and I said, "great, see you then."

I got all dolled up and met him at the noisy, crowded bar. Barely five minutes into insufferable small talk, he suggests we hook up. And because I'm still feeling the hurt from earlier, I nonchalantly responded, "Sure, let's go." He seemed really surprised, which made me giggle, because, yeah, it's not the most "romantic" or subtle way of going about things XD

Long story, short: we hooked up and it was terrible. He was attractive, sure, but I wouldn't say I was attracted TO him. I barely knew anything about him. Ultimately, we agreed that it was a one-off thing and went about our lives.

I didn't even tell my friend about it. What was the actual victory here? I craved genuine human connection and replaced it with the most boring, impersonal sex I've ever had.

But it took years to learn that what I was actually experiencing was the AroAce spectrum/umbrella. I firmly believed that whirlwind romances and spontaneous sex was what everyone wanted, so for YEARS I threw myself into relationship after relationship. I'd date and realize I hated it, breaking the guy's heart and feeling like there was something evil about me. I put myself in situations where I felt I had the upper hand, and thus, no risk of being rejected. So unhealthy.

So, yeah. Those are some of the experiences and lessons I had to learn to become a more genuine, healthy version of myself. I wish society would stop framing these desires as universal. They can cause so much damage, you know?

Anyway, I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences! <3

Grossed out by family vloggers

After watching a few documentaries and exposés around religious fundamentalism and the birther movement, I’ve seen way more mommy and family vloggers than I ever thought could (or should) exist.

Like, I get that vlogging is popular among the LDS specifically due to their penchant for record-keeping evolving with the internet and social media.
But other folks who wake up and think, “you know what would be fun AND make us lots of dirty money? Pimping out our kids’ personal lives and our family drama for all the world to see and judge.”

I can tell you that much of my childhood was panic attacks and subsequent punishment—events that should never be public. And now there are moms that eagerly antagonize their kids to get “juicy content.” How is this not child abuse? Why is this not banned?

One mommy vlogger issued an apology to her followers for not having filmed in four hours because she was experiencing stress and grief over a recent miscarriage. For the love of god, woman, take a fucking break!

And imagine being the kid or kids who are being raised by a TV personality and manager instead of a loving, caring parent. Your most private moments are permanently accessible and exploitable by strangers all over the world, including those in your neighborhood and school.

The most fucked up part is the birther movement in it all. Pregnancy and live birth videos rake in a lot of views and advertisers. So before their first kid says their first word, they’re already planning another. Like the first one didn’t count ‘cause they wanna see how many more views they can get with the second.

It creeps me out to no end and I wish this genre would die out—either from a cultural shift by realizing the practice is completely unethical, or by policy that protects the children above all else.

I’m interested in your experiences and thoughts around this phenomenon, especially as ND folks who spend so much time masking already…

LF book recommendations about Norway

Long story, short: I’m looking for nonfiction books about Norway—not just about the Vikings 😅

I’ve been casually learning the language on Duolingo—I know, it’s not great, I’m gonna try out Mango and Norskappen—in the hopes of visiting someday.

But what I’m missing is context. I’ve seen all the Viking and WWII docs, but I’m sure there’s more to Norway than those two lol

I want to read about the culture, architecture, ecology, notable figures, groundbreaking legislation and movements, how the current political system functions, the Svalbard seed vault, etc.

(In English, for now, please lol)

Thanks in advance! 💚

What movie(s) continue to negatively impact you?

The Truman Show (1998) scarred me when I was little.

It convinced me that it was at least possible that everyone in my life was actually filming me. I'd look at people and wonder if they watched me tweeze my eyebrows in the mirror this morning. I was further convinced whenever I would get into an argument with an authority figure because what they were telling me didn't make any logical sense. (i.e., do as I say, not as I do; because I said so, etc.) I began to believe people would behave in ways contrary to reality because it was a plot point to see how I would react to it.

I still look at random objects and wonder if they're cameras...

What movies messed you up in ways that exacerbated (or played on) your OCD?

I get irritated when I’m sexualized because, to me, it’s objectification

(35cisF) I haven’t come out to everyone in my life yet, but I just moved apartments so I introduced myself to my openly queer neighbors as AroAce.

My first-met neighbors are a gay couple and one of them asked what “my deal” was, and I said, “oh, just kinda doing the aroace thing. Ya know.” To which he replied, “yeah, I sensed something up with you.” (Did I have a fucking tattoo on my forehead? I was wearing shorts, an oversized t-shirt, flip-flops, and my hair was up in a bun. What, exactly, was “up with me”?) Why assume a stranger’s sexuality? 😵‍💫

They introduced me to their trans-fem friend. She also asked my deal, to which I replied, “Aroace.” And since then, she’s felt the need (for some reason) to share with me some pretty intimate details of her sex life. Unsolicited and irrelevant to the topic at hand. 😨

Then today, I was changing in front of my open window. (It was early morning and my window is high up and faces a bunch of greenery, but I have ordered the privacy window film lol.) Anyway, I see her head pop up briefly ‘cause she had to jump to peek and I hit the deck. I try to laugh it off as an oopsie, but what followed sort of confirms my anxiety…

I went outside to apologize to HER for my inappropriate changing in front of an open window. She replied, “oh, I didn’t see. What were you doing?”

Me: “Changing.”
Her: “Changing what?”
Me: “My shirt.”
Her: “Did you have a bra on?”
Me: …”what?”
Her: “Just wanted to know if I missed anything good.”
Me: 🤢 “No, nothing. See ya later.”

My ex doesn’t know I’m AroAce yet, and he keeps roping my butt into the things he likes about me. (We parted on good terms.) But I’m waiting for a good time to tell him one of the main reasons our marriage didn’t work 😆

[EDIT: I didn’t know I was aroace when I got married. I only recently figured it out.]

I’ll send a “sending good vibes” video to one of my guy friends and he’ll say something about the weather and me being hot 😑

Can I not just exist as a human fucking being?! Say something about my awesome SpongeBob shirt!

In closing, thank you for letting me blow off some steam. My fellow aroace stoners are welcome to join me in the Ether of smoking a bowl to quell our individual or collective rage 💚😮‍💨

What would the LIFE board game look like if it were designed by AroAces?

*Hints joint* okay, but what if the game of LIFE was designed without amatonormativity and compulsory heteromonogamy? So, instead of marriage and children being part of the required path, what are some other milestones of life? Like those based on some sort of personal or professional fulfillment, ya know?

For extra points: try to take away the capitalism, too. Like instead of getting money on paydays you get something cool, like a rare book collection or a free buffet of your favorite food?

I love this game ('cause RPG-ish), but I hate that none of it really applies to me.

DAE Become Exhausted after One Task?

Most mornings I get up to feed the cat, give him his meds, etc, then go back to bed to think about what I can do next.

I wait until I get hunger pangs before eating something. But when I go to the kitchen, I have a sink of dirty dishes. Fuck.

Okay, so I wash the dirty dishes. That was exhausting, so, back to bed. Still hungry.

Yesterday, I spent the day navigating public transportation and when I got home I crashed for five hours.

Does anyone have any insight as to why I’m so exhausted after completing a common household or daily task? Like, I need a break before moving on to the next thing 😵‍💫

This Nerd Needs Book Recommendations 🤓📚🍄

Greetings!

I’m interested in trying psilocybin but I gotta know what I’m getting into first. I’m looking for science-backed books about psilocybin. If they’re peer-reviewed, even better, but I understand legal limitations stymie research.

So far, I’ve found two that seem to pop up everywhere—are these worthwhile and reliable?

- Your Psilocybin Mushroom Companion by Michelle Janikian (2019)
- The Psilocybin Connection by Jahan Khamsehzadeh (2022)

Thank you! 💚

LF Tiny Home Contractor/Supplier Recommendations 🏡

Hey neighbors!

I’m starting the early stages of planning a small, sustainable home build here in Tompkins County.

I’m looking for recommendations for tiny‑home builders or suppliers who are familiar with local codes and can work with under‑400 sq ft models that include a loft. The home will be on a permanent foundation and built to code—not on wheels or anything mobile.

Long‑term, my goal is to build something that fits into the landscape and supports the local ecosystem: native plants, good watershed practices, low‑impact design, etc. I’ll be coordinating with Cornell Cooperative Extension for the ecological side of things.

I’ll probably be financing through a VA construction‑to‑perm loan (likely through Veterans United), so bonus points if the builder has experience with VA requirements or is open to getting approved.

If you know any local contractors, design‑build folks, or tiny‑home suppliers who do good work in this size range—or if you’ve built something similar yourself—I’d love to hear your experiences.

Thanks in advance! 💚

Where to Learn about Sustainable Building in Tompkins County?

Hello, Folks of Ithaca (Ithacans?)!

I’m a disabled veteran /slash/ neuroscience student planning to put down long‑term roots in Tompkins County. I’m looking at rural parcels and want to approach the land with care—ecological restoration, native planting, watershed protection, and low‑impact living are all vital to my plans. (Like a solar-punk green witch tiny home commune 🤣)

Before I get too far into the process, I’m keen to learn from people and organizations in the area who focus on:
- ecological restoration and native species
- sustainable building practices
- land stewardship and soil health
- watershed protection
- invasive species management
- incentives for using solar, etc.
- community‑based sustainability projects

I’m especially interested in groups or initiatives that can help me understand how to build in a way that respects the land and contributes positively to the surrounding ecosystem and community.

If you know of local nonprofits, cooperatives, educational programs, county resources, or community groups that align with these values, I’d really appreciate your recommendations. I’m hoping to learn from people who’ve been doing this work here for a long time. 💚

Did Sertraline Make Me a Vampire? 🧛🏻‍♀️

I’m already super pale and pasty, and I reapply sunscreen throughout the day, and I slink from shadow to shadow 😅, but I feel like since I started the meds a couple years ago, my skin is DRAMATIC about UV exposure. It takes seconds for me to feel like my skin is peeling itself off, it burns that much. It takes less than five minutes of exposure to cause a burn 🤦🏻‍♀️

I know this is listed as one of the side effects, but to this extreme? Sheesh.

Has anyone else experienced this?

p.s. Should I perhaps move to a more pharmaceutically favorable clime, like Scotland? 😂 💙☁️

For months, I've been dealing with harassment by the landlord and his cronies property management team. I've sought advice from everywhere I could think of (within my budget), which means reaching out to non-profit legal aid societies who couldn't seem to agree on which areas of NY they helped. I always seemed to be "outside their network."

I submitted an intake form online to this free legal aid society and they called to schedule an over-the-phone intake with a paralegal a week later. Okay, I re-explain the situation to the paralegal, who schedules another phone appointment with a lawyer, who apparently hasn't read my intake form or the information I provided the paralegal. So, once again, I'm explaining the entire situation over the phone and all she can say is, "tell the AG."

Fine. I remember visiting the NYS AG site months ago and deciding to wait to get more info and advice before using the "submit a complaint" feature. (I wanted to make sure my complaints were valid before wasting the AG office's time.)

Well, that was a naive attitude because it appears the AG can't help, either! I go to the website to file a complaint and just look at the options! My complaint is about management’s harassment and interference with tenant organizing, but there is no link to submit a complaint! The click journey ends with "Unlawful evictions" and that's not what I'm dealing with!

So, I called the number on the site and it was the same cyclical hell, but worse! The pre-recorded voice kept suggesting going to the website.

What hell have we wrought upon our own people? And for what?

My neighbors and I continue to be ignored and/or harassed, our rights merely a shadow on the cave wall.

Okay, now that the rant is over, deep breaths. 😮‍💨

At this point, I’m still taking advice, but it appears my only option is to wait until things get “actionably” worse. (I also accept good vibes. 💚)

Edit: I live in Upstate NY, not NYC 😕
