Looking for gentle horror movies to introduce the genre

Try to remember the very first "horror film" you ever watched, that tapped into new emotions but didn't scar you for life.

Instead, you were thrilled by the new sensation and wanted to try other horror movies.

I'm trying to introduce a friend to the horror genre, but my threshold for scares and violence is much higher by now.

Could you recommend some gentler horror movies to introduce to a newbie? Can be as mainstream as you want.

TTRPG - single day events vs weekends

An ad appeared on my FB feed, from Ravenwood Tabletop, TTRPG Adult Summer Camp. 3 nights and 15 hours of gaming. Looks amazing, but pricey.

Just wondering if there are any single-day TTRPG events where you pay and sign up for gaming sessions? Montreal or Toronto area.

[Mothership] comic book story or series

Please feel free to remove, as it is not about role-playing.

I supported MoSh since I saw the Kickstarter ad on Facebook. I have the box set and some of the major addons from TKG.

My hobby is writing comic book stories, and I would love to collaborate with an artist(s) to produce a Mothership comic story. We can start small, like an 8-pager.

Anybody else think this is a good idea? Please post in this thread, I don't check my messages often.

IJW: Two Mules for Sister Sara [1970]

Never seen this one before, but it starred Clint Eastwood and Shirley MacLaine and had music by Ennio Morricone. A crowd-pleaser for sure, and good chemistry between Eastwood and MacLaine. The musical motif includes a mule-like sound, which was interesting. I suppose I skipped this film because it's not part of the Man with No Name Trilogy. But in fact it was quite enjoyable, had lots of action and was under two hours. I would recommend.

Looking for movies where the protagonist has visible scars on his face

I've seen movies like Darkman (Liam Neeson) and all the Joker related movies. I'm interested in the concept of being ostracized by society due to disfigurement.

Where Eagles Dare [1968]

I caught this on TCM a couple weeks ago, first time I'd seen it. I remember reading some of Alistair MacLean's other books in high school, so this was low-risk.

Genre: action / adventure / war

Directed by Brian G. Hutton

Main cast: Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood and Mary Ure

Bonus cameos: Ingrid Pitt as "Heidi Schmidt". Derren Nesbitt (I recognized him from 'The Prisoner' series) as one of the bad guys.

As promised, there is non-stop action in this film. Lots of plot twists, so you need to pay attention. The film runs long, 2 hr 38 min. Richard Burton is the main star, he wears many hats. It was released in the U.S. in March 1969, so this would have been (one of) their summer blockbuster popcorn movies. We don't get these types of movies nowadays, so I recommend checking it out. 7/10

Performance: Richard Burton is great as the main character 'Major John Smith,' head of the commando team. Clint Eastwood is there for box office; he plays 'US Army Ranger Lieutenant Morris Schaffer'. Schaffer believes that Smith has a secret agenda.

Plot summary: Set during World War II, it follows a Special Operations Executive team charged with saving a captured American General from the fictional Schloß Adler fortress, except the mission turns out not to be as it seems.

The next time 'The Guns of Navarone' is on TCM, I'll watch that too.

Old school family diner

Looking for a classic Canadian diner in Mississauga or Oakville that serves traditional food like BLT sandwiches, grilled cheese, hot chicken sandwiches, apple pie, baked potato, that sort of thing. Not "fusion" with other types of cuisine. Would prefer local family owned, but if there's a franchise that does this I would try that too.

[Hiring] need a sounding board - plot structure

Long post coming up!

I'm working on a 20-page standard comic (not webtoon or manga) and I'm very close to completing the plot structure.

I took a course at Joe Kubert School so I understand the process for pitching and scripting comics. Just wrapping up my first 8-page story which I'll submit to an editor for consideration.

Where I'm at: I have a Rashomon-style plot structure, where a single event is re-told from different character's perspective, leading up to the big reveal at the end. So I've spent a lot of time plotting out the key events and making sure they overlap in meaningful ways.

Where I'm stuck: determining the sequence of events, so that it's engaging for the reader, and increasingly significant. Even the first event, I have some doubts about it.

What I'm looking for: some real-time Zoom sessions so I have someone to bounce off ideas and be inspired.

Non-negotiable: English is your first language, so we can brainstorm in real-time.

Time Zone: I'm in the Eastern time zone (North America). So the closer you are, the easier it will be to coordinate Zoom sessions. If you're in the Pacific zone, perhaps we can meet on the weekend.

Genre: think of Rashomon type movies. Last Duel, Weapons, Pulp Fiction.

If you made it this far, please post a link to your online portfolio (comics you've written). Looking forward to working with you! We can discuss your hourly rate.
