Suggestions for good books on the history of feminist movements in India

I’m interested in reading good books on the history of feminism in India. Prefer scholarly, well written books. I have leave for a few days, so would like to finish it over the week. Open to discussing books too!

Am I the kameeni for telling my parents that I will prioritize my career goals over my ability to financially support them?

I (23F) am from a middle class family. Both my parents have recently retired, so I’m the only earning member in the family (my younger brother will graduate after 2 years). They have a modest pension and savings.

I graduated from an NLU and have been working in a law firm for the last year. However, my plan has been to clear my student loan (which I have done) and join the Army (through CDS or JAG entries).

I had a conversation with my parents recently. They do not want me to quit my law firm job and join the Army. They feel that the law firm pay will be helpful for the family, and that I’d be able to better support my brother’s education. However, although the Army’s pay is not that high, it’s something that I’m passionate about and really motivated in pursuing.

They are also concerned about the safety of joining the Army and whether I’ll be in situations of risk (which to be frank is a possibility but I’ll be trained and will be doing my duty as required or ordered).

I told my parents that I will follow my career choices regardless of my ability to financially support them. And out of whatever I earn, I will try my best to support them. They got offended and think that I’m being an ungrateful.

I don’t mind supporting my parents financially. I will continue to do so in any way I can. But I feel it’s unreasonable of them to expect me to compromise on my career aspirations just for the sake of finances. They seem disappointed in me although I’ve done my best of being a good daughter who’d make them proud.

Any tips to address this situation?

(Edit: I will be balancing Army prep with my job. I will not be quitting my job until I get selected for the Academy)

Query regarding choice of arms - CDS Entry

I (23F) want to join the Army. I have applied to CDS and JAG.

I’m more interested in CDS because of the diversity of roles. I’m interested in outdoorsy, adventurous roles such as Artillery, Aviation, Military Police and Ordnance. How is allotment of service done? Is it on merit, based on performance in OTA?

What are some things to consider as a female Army aspirant?

I (23F) am a lawyer working in a corporate law firm’s litigation practice. I’ve been thinking about joining the Army and have applied for CDS and JAG entries. I’ve always wanted to be involved in public service (aim was to be an IPS Officer but UPSC attempt ended in a close disappointment) and have been sensing the urge to become an Army Officer, and serve the country. My perspective on the Army, however, is shaped by the men in my life. I’m an unapologetic, outspoken feminist. I’m ambitious and career oriented. What is a career in the Army like for women? What are a few important things to consider as a woman preparing to join the Army?

Occasional pangs of regret on failing to clear UPSC

I (23F) am working in a corporate law firm and graduated from a good NLU. Throughout law school, I wanted to be an IPS Officer and prepared for UPSC accordingly. I also balanced leadership roles, sports (mainly athletics and basketball), moot court competitions, debates, academics and internships and got a PPO too.

I gave UPSC with a lot of confidence, aspiring to be an IPS Officer. I cleared prelims and was confident about doing well in Mains. But destiny had other plans for me and I was very unwell when I had to appear for Mains. I had typhoid and could not give my best. I was utterly disappointed with myself for failing to be at my 100%.

I went ahead with my corporate law firm job. I was staffed with an excellent litigation team, have am generally considered to be a high performer (in fact, I’m burning the midnight oil at work right now). I really do not think I have it in me to give UPSC once again. But I keep thinking about serving the country, and working towards service of the public.

A few months ago, I signed up for the Indian Army CDS and more recently, JAG. I’m focused on getting recommended and joining the Army. Hoping for the best, and an opportunity to live a life less ordinary.

Transitioning from Tier 1 Corporate Law Firm to Army JAG

I (23F) have been working in a Tier 1 corporate law firm for over a year, as part of the disputes team.

I’m a good performer, and can work under pressure, where the stakes are high. My original plan was to work in a corporate law firm for 3-4 years and then join a good chamber. But lately I have strongly been thinking about the Indian Army JAG, and have applied for it recently. Is there anybody else aspiring for JAG? Wanted to understand what the career prospects are like for women and the overall experience.

Guidance needed on Indian Army - JAG

I (23F) graduated from an NLU last year (several medals and top 5% ranking in my batch) and am working in the litigation team of a tier 1 law firm, in Delhi. I also qualified CLAT PG last year but decided not to pursue LLM.

Indian Army JAG notification is out and I’m considering it. I have a few questions:

  1. What are the prospects like for women through the JAG Entry?
  2. Is permanent commission an option or a possibility?
  3. What are the selection standards like? I’ve competed in athletics throughout school and college (state level) and go to the gym regularly.
  4. What is JAG service like? Is it challenging or mundane? Will I get to grow, particularly as a lawyer?
  5. Are there any other JAG aspirants here? Would like to connect.

Getting married early - is it worth going ahead? (23F and 23M)

My boyfriend and I have been in a relationship for the last 6 years, and have known each other and our families for even longer than that. I graduated from an NLU last year and have been working in a T1 law firm in Delhi. He is serving in the Army, after passing out from IMA and NDA. We both belong to Delhi and our families are from the same Rajput community.

We are strongly thinking of getting married, considering that both of us have graduated and financially independent. The long distance aspect of the relationship will remain because I will continue to live in Delhi whereas he will be serving as per his postings and training courses. We both are really keen on taking things forward and seeing where married life leads us.

I understand we are both quite young to get married but are there any considerations we should think about before going forward? We have informed our parents informally about our intention to get married, but want to start taking things forward and get married by next year.
