Poverty helmet

My friend gave me this FMA airsoft helmet and scrim last year when I showed up to the 48 hour LARP sesh with my ballistic helmet. I’ve been using it for long days/overnight LARPing. Idk what the opinion on these things are but it’s been fine so far.

It’s an airsoft replica of a ballistic helmet so the summers are a little tough with no vents, but I guess it works out when it’s pouring which happens a lot here. Retention is good, has that little ratcheting wheel. The pads are just okay. But it hasn’t cracked or anything.

I will probably just get a real bump helmet one of these days, I’ve just been fine with this so I held it off. If you really have no money after buying NODs this isn’t so bad.

Windows XP Task Pane on Windows 11

I made a real functioning Windows XP task pane that works on Windows 11.

You can technically just install it and the other prerequisites (if you want the XP ribbon) on a normal Windows 11 setup and it’ll work fine. It’ll just look kinda goofy because the Task Pane is always XP themed regardless of what the rest of Windows looks like.

If you actually want the rest of Windows 11 to look like XP too, I have all that stuff on my site as well. Most of my original setup came from MrAmayoskens YouTube tutorial, which I have linked there.

I also made my own tutorial that you can basically follow alongside the video. It has some extra tweaks I’ve done, stuff I changed or added myself, and fixes/workarounds for parts of the original tutorial that have gotten outdated over time.

The Task Pane is up there to download, along with the other stuff I’ve made, and I put up a short video showing it and the rest of the setup working too.

Update to Zillennial age regression setup + Windows 11 that looks like Windows XP

Here’s an update to my Zillennial age regression battlestation.

I’ve added some stuff to the top shelf, like my fanny packs and Sonny floppy camera, got some more PSP stuff, and used 3M Dual Lock to stick my controller adapters right onto the side of the cubby where the PC sits. I also updated the 3D printed USB floppy drive holder so it works with different types. Then I repurposed old prints of it to put my lamp and PSP stuff on while giving space to put things under it all.

CRT: Gateway EV910B
LCD: Gateway FPD1520
Keyboard: Keychron R6
Mouse: Microsoft Optical 1.1A
Speakers: Boston Acoustics BA635
PC: FLP02 case, Ryzen 7 5700X, RTX 1660 Super

It’s not a powerhouse but it plays emulators and 2000s games just fine.

Also that’s Windows 11 . It’s all mods, programs, and changing settings to make it look and behave more like XP.

I followed a YouTube tutorial for most of the original setup, but I’ve made a bunch of my own tweaks since then and even made some programs to add more functionality. The XP Task Pane is a real working task pane in Windows 11. It’s not just for show.

I put a short video on my site showing the Task Pane and the rest of the setup working. I also put together the full tutorial there to use alongside the original YouTube video, plus downloads for the programs I made and the other stuff I used, so you can do the same thing if you want.

LARP corner

I bought a better desk for my guns, so I repurposed my old one for this setup. There’s still some spillover.

Gateway 400 select + EV500 + Windows 98SE. No graphics cards. Just completely stock. Lego Rock Raiders runs good on it so I consider that a win.

Fell in love with “trash”

KAK upper rifle gas 16in barrel, with Midwest industries rail and AO precision bolt carrier group.

PSA lower with magpul furniture.

LaRue MBT2 trigger.

Super Safety.

Minus the accessories it was only around $600. Then I ended up liking it more than I expected and started using it at night. Gave it a BCM stock and Rifle speed gas block.

Is it more accurate than my DD and LaRue? No. Does it work, is it accurate enough, and is it fun? Yes

Relax

If you want a whole room or computer setup to be Frutiger Aero, more power to you. However, you don’t need to stress yourself out just because someone in the comments might say “erm actually that lamp you have is Y2K.” Also you don’t need to tell yourself “If I buy one more thing then it’ll be perfect” every week.

People in the 2000s had a setup that was 75% Y2K and 25% Frutiger Aero. We held on to things longer back then. Growing up I had an aqua mouse for a beige CRT and a Frutiger Aero looking lamp all on a wood desk. Real rooms were a mix of styles, not a carefully planned aesthetic.

Just enjoy your stuff.

This place doesn’t even feel like Reddit

This place is like people that heard of Reddit, got on Reddit, saw how cringe it was, and decided to come here. You get everything from like MAGA people and actual leftists (not just liberals) debating. But I will say, typically, people on Reddit are like really snarky and annoying on this site or think like everything's super deep. These behaviors usually get attributed to people on the left. But I can say, even when the debates are something about healthcare and stuff like that, even the people on the left aren't super annoying about it. Meanwhile someone is being a snarky dork to me on another ub, calling me anti-intellectual over me not caring about neocities sites not being mobile friendly.

So it is nice to see people here are more normal regardless of opinions. It truly feels like a different site. People aren’t as snarky and smelling their own farts here even if they have takes you don’t like.

My summer EDC.

Wheel Of Fortune fanny pack

Smith and Wesson Shield

Nokia 3210

Gerber Dime multitool

PSP

PSP headset and spare battery

I just started carrying inside the fanny pack instead of a belly band. I ordered a trigger guard holster for this thing.

Its so tiresome that every hobby on reddit is gate kept if you use AI for literally anything

https://preview.redd.it/ue1c9gbn33dh1.png?width=649&format=png&auto=webp&s=81d0261522fc78900542bda25d4f37efab4521c6

I use AI as a coding co-worker because it can root through my PC at 1am or do busy work while I focus on other things. I don't have a LLM on my phone. Ive seen in retro/CRT subs people putting LLMs in old stuff and using the cmd prompt to talk to it.

Also....People in the 2000s wanted more AI if anything.

Some people are “idea guys”

And that’s okay.

If you come up with the idea, test it out, find something wrong, go through the process of fixing it or come up with workarounds to a issue, add more features, and repeat for a week(s); it’s your project now even if AI types the code. In any other context this would be called being a project manager. A movie director doesn’t say the lines, yet still his movie. Same difference.

I’m in a discord server that makes GTA V mods, and some guy got ran out for using AI even though his mods were amazing and he disclosed they were AI in the descriptions and readme. So the question is how come all the real coders can’t simply make cool things like that? They can call this guy lazy even though he spent hour bug testing and refining mods, but they can’t outdo him?

It just really rubs me the wrong way when people are like “oh, you have no skill”. My buddy uses AI, and he is a mechanic at a tuner shop, do his irl skills not count because he didn’t learn python or lua?

USB Floppy 5.25 Mount

I made this USB floppy mount for my FLP02. It works with all 4 that I tested from Amazon. Some work connected to the motherboard header from an adapter some need to be snaked out the back to a USB 2 port. First 2 pics taken with my floppy disk camera.

There’s different levels to AI usage.

If you’re using AI pictures or videos to make like a joke, I don’t think it’s that bad. What really annoys me is people that make AI “art” and try to pass it off as like some cool thing that they made. There’s nothing interesting about AI art. If you’re a company that uses AI art or just some guy that’s trying to monetize AI art, fuck you. But some guy showing you a picture of Peter Griffin doing 9/11 while smoking a blunt is not something to get worked up about.

That also brings me to my next point being vibecoding. There’s people that just make complete slop that’s broken and they don’t test it. They just throw it out there and it sucks. RPCS3 had an issue with people doing this. I think it’s generally shitty to do that, but there is a flipside that’s going to ruffle some feathers.

In regard to making apps, updates to apps, scripts, websites, etc. But even then your only payment should be in clout not money. I think it’s fair to give you a pat on the back if you made something cool that works even if you didn’t literally type out that code, I’m not paying you for it though.

I think the real distinction is hobbyist aren’t the ones you should be mad at unless it’s art they’re trying to pass off as “serious” or releasing broken programs that only work on their PC 50% of the time. A lot of people are “idea guys” in some fields and their skills are in other buckets. If my mechanic vibe coded a free fallout 3 mod that works I’m not going to say he has no skills. He’s better at his job than plenty of software developers/engineers are at their job.

FLP02 Nostalgia Sleeper

Hello all,

My nephew told me I should share my setup, so here it goes.

At first I wanted a 90s setup. But halfway through the Zillennial age regression hit and I thought “Why don’t I just make this like MY childhood?” I inherited the old family computer and used it until 2013, so that’s what I ended up recreating.

The setup uses a Gateway EV910B CRT, Gateway FPD1520 LCD, Boston Acoustics BA635 speakers, a Telex M40 desk mic($6 and works great with sound suppression turned on), and a matching Gateway keyboard and mouse.

The computer is a sleeper, but not really. It’s a SilverStone FLP02 with a Ryzen 7 5700X, GTX 1660 Super, and Gigabyte B550 inside. Enough power to run my emulators and late-2000s games at max settings which is all I wanted.

I painted the DVD drive bezels heirloom white, and the floppy drive is actually a USB floppy mounted behind a 3D printed carrier that presses the eject button. I redesigned the part to fix some warping, but I’ve been too lazy to swap it in.

And yes, this is Windows 11. I followed a tutorial and a bunch of extra tweaks to make it look and behave like Windows XP. Overall the setup is less “2000s advertisements” and more “the family PC I actually grew up with.”
