Things I wish someone had told me

If you are visiting bangalore for the first time or already living here coming from other states:

  1. Never take autos or cabs directly near the bus/railway station. Always walk for 100 meters if you can and book it from uber. Never ola or rapido. If you have luggage, book it while you are in the bus/train 5 mins before your arrival.

  2. Try to learn at least a few basic words in kannada like anna, change illa (no change), (put area name) ge bartira? while trying to catch a local auto. Chances of you getting scammed is very less.

  3. Find a reputable broker from an actual firm who can understand your language if you are renting a house. Don't go with local brokers.

  4. Use BMTC buses as much as possible. It's simply the best transport system.

  5. Never ever take the bridge in majestic during late nights and early mornings to reach a particular BMTC bus platform. Always go from the ground. You will save a lot of money and harassment from transgenders and beggars who target in bulk when you take the bridge as it's shorter than walking downstairs.

  6. Always keep at least 200-300 rupees in cash at least while taking an auto. You'll save a lot of headache from drivers who only need cash.

  7. If you can afford a water purifier, go for it even if you are planning to stay for a few months. You can go with subscription based ones. There are many. Else, the best thing is to go and get the water from 5rs water centers which are all over bangalore and the quality is a lot better than purifier water.

  8. Never ever drink tap water directly. Tds levels in Bangalore are crazy high.

For everyone else:

  1. Get your water tanks cleaned at home including the sump at least once in a year.

  2. Clean your washing machines using scale removers every 3-6 months.

  3. Clean your kitchen and bathroom drains every 1-3 months using drain cleaners which will melt the hairs and other things stuck. This will be a lifesaver and prevents floodings or blocked drainage.

  4. Get a water tds machine - costs just 200 rs. It will show you if your home/purifierwater is good for drinking or cooking or even showering if you have dandruff or hairloss problems.

  5. Don't go with paid anti virus or anti malware tools like Kaspersky, avast etc. windows defender is the best one and comes free for all windows machines.

  6. instead of drilling a lot of holes on the walls for various purposes, get double tape hooks. This will save you money when you are vacating and avoids a lot of hassles with the landlord.

I guess that's it. If you want know more about anything else, I'll be happy to answer.

Combating email spoofing

Has anyone here were able to combat spoofed emails sent from your own address if the domain is using cPanel?

I understand that the domain has to be properly authenticated with spf, dkim, dmarc and bimi(as an extra security). Respectfully , I also am not looking for any advice on using external services such as Google workspace or O365 because I know they are really good at combating such spam.

I understand about training email filters or spam assassin to combat spam for incoming emails but the problem with spoofing is, anyone can simply modify the header to be abc@example.com to send it to abc@example.com from any IP or a cheap vps or from hacked sites.

This question is mainly for cPanel users who were able to successfully combat spoofing. I am working in the web hosting/sysadmin field from past 8 years but haven't been able to figure this out. I never had root access though.

Reporting sender IPs/domains to third party hosting providers is a nightmare in itself and takes up a lot of time.

Is there any setting in WHM or through root ssh access wherein if an email was sent from the same address, before delivering that message, cPanel performs the sending IP/domain/header checks and block such emails automatically?

Please do not bash me here because even though I have worked in this field for many years, I never had root access and looking at exim configurations, I am a bit scared to make any changes on my test vps running cPanel to break more email functionality.

I also know that we can use incoming email filters or third party inbound relay services like barracuda but I mainly want to know if there is any way I can protect the accounts from spoofing on a cPanel which doesn't use any kind of inbound spam filters.

Pros in this sub, have you found a way to combat this? Would really appreciate all of the helpful comments.

How do you find clients when you're not based where they are?

I run a small web design business from India and most of my work has been through referrals or word of mouth so far.

I want to start working with clients in the US, UK, and other Western countries, but I'm finding it hard to break in since I don't have a local presence or network there.

I tried Google Ads for a bit, but the CPC for web design keywords is brutal and it just doesn't make sense financially when you're earning in rupees.Burned through budget pretty fast without much to show for it.

For anyone who's grown a service business across borders, how did you do it? Did you find a local partner, build trust through content, run ads that actually worked, something else?

Also curious if being upfront about being overseas helps or hurts when pitching to clients.

Appreciate any advice, trying to figure out the right approach here.

[Hiring] - Looking for a business partner

I run a web design and development studio in India.

I build and manage everything (design, dev, hosting, ongoing maintenance) but I'm not based in the US and it's tough to land clients there without someone local doing outreach.

Looking for someone in the US (or UK/Canada/Australia) who's good at finding small businesses that need a website or a redesign.

You bring the leads and close the deal, I handle all the technical work and client delivery.

This would work as a commission split, open to discussing percentage based on experience. Ideal if you already know small business owners, do local sales/marketing, or have a network you can tap into.

Drop a comment or DM me with a bit about your background and how you'd approach finding clients. Happy to share examples of past work. Thank you!

Honest answers needed please

I am a noob at bash scripting but I ask LLMs to generate me commands or scripts after giving my detailed requirements. I then run them on a test server and if everything looks good, I run it on the production.

Seeing soo long commands, loops and conditions makes my head spin as I am a non coder. How are you guys able to remember every command or logic etc? Part of me thinks is because I use windows instead of a Linux distro and I am very comfortable using windows. I have tried dual booting my pc with multiple Linux distros but end up not using it after a day or two.

I know a few people who used to come up with long scripts for any specific task within minutes. How do you guys do that of the top of your head? Are there any tips or tricks for a noob like me? Thank you!

Supabase local instance

Hey guys, sorry if this a noob post. I am very new to supabase as most of my previous projects were built using php and mysql and WordPress .Ever since I started vibe coding, every AI tool refers to supabase and their $25/month plan for one project is not affordable for me yet as these are all hobby projects.

I was planning on buying a vps (8/16GB ram and 6 cpu cores) for a month and then upgrade it to a year if things to well.

Is anyone currently self hosting supabase for multiple projects of yours? How has been the performance and server resource usage/issues so far? Should I instead go for a higher powered server, like 16GB RAM and 8 CPU cores? Thank you!

Amazon has started Amazon Vines- check your emails for an invite

Amazon India has started Amazon Vines which is an invite only program. Sellers give you free products for a review/feedback exchange. Unfortunately I was not selected but it's a great program to get stuff for free and save a lot of money. So check your amazon registered emails for an invite link. Happy savings!

Too many errors/bugs post build with tanstack?

Is anyone else facing too many bugs with the new tanstack workflow? My prompts are very detailed and I give specific instructions but it looks like lovable is unable to solve many of these bugs. I was not facing such issues before they introduced tanstack. Anyone else facing this?

Converting prepaid to postpaid for priority plan

I had recharged for a year a couple months ago. My current speeds are around 10-20Mbps (not MB/s). It's too slow right now. If I want to upgrade to post paid, will I get any refund or less bill? Also, has anyone actually gotten more speed after upgrading? The speed I posted are inside my home and outside I get around 2X of that, nothing great. I also have a jio number where I get around 200Mb/s at home and more outside.

CAs working on taxes/gst, what is the go to tool you use for checking gst rates?

Hey everyone, i hope you're doing well.

I am currently building a free tool to help CAs and common citizens to verify the updated and current gst rates across all products/services. I was referring to the main gst site for slabs but the page said it was updated in 2023.

I also heard about quarterly notifications sent by the government if gst rates for particular products/services get updated but for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to subscribe to those notifications.

Is there a better place/website I can use or subscribe to so that I can update my tool regularly with up to date gst rates? Thank you very much!

Some things I have learned so far and some more about cPanel migration - Part 1

When vibecoding thing boomed, I didn't even know what supabase was. It felt like an outsider to me as I mainly hosted mine and my clients' sites in cPanel. So far I have done a good number of projects and here's what works best in the long run.

  1. If you are an agency, if a client wants a portfolio site which doesn't get updated more often, ask lovable to build the static site, export the code to GitHub, download it locally, build it and only publish the final dist (output) files to public_html.

Ask lovable to secure the site, especially the contact form. Place the config.php file outside the home directory which contains your cPanel's SMTP credentials for contact forms.

  1. If you plan to host more personal and clients' sites, purchase a reseller server from a good company with good lve limits. It would be worth it in the long run.

  2. for point 1, you could do it via cloudflare workers or another solution but if you're used to cPanel, you would have full control of your sites files and database. I prefer this almost all the time unless the project really needs supabase.

  3. ask lovable to not place any api keys, credentials etc on the front end code.

  4. Once the site is hosted in your cPanel, enable cloudflare proxy (cdn) to protect it in the long term. Free plan is more than enough for even larger sites.

  5. Instead of using Google recaptcha on contact forms, use cloudflare turnstile. It's free and provides better protection than recaptcha and also doesn't irritate your visitors much.

That's all for today. I'll share more tips as I come across them. Happy vibe coding!

Majority of Local vendors are scammers!!

This post is for people who constantly get scammed from local vendors and lose their hard earned money. All positive/negative feedback/discussion is welcomed but please know that this is not only my personal experience(happened too many times) but to many others I know of.

Just because I look somewhat soft from the outside (spectacles, shoes and good looking clothes and soft talking), we should not be taken for granted by these local vendors. They really do hike the price or try to scam us when we look like this.

Today I tried to buy 10 kgs of oninon, 2kgs of garlic, 2kgs of mango and was scammed initially and this is how this all happened and how I was able to save money.

For garlic 2kgs, the weighing machine's tray (the one in yellow/red color) itself weighs around 500g (I was shocked), and on top of it, the machine was hovering between 1300gms to 1900 gms without the tray and with the tray, it was 2550gms. I politely asked him to reset it to zero and when he did, 2kgs of onion went down to 1352 grams. Mind you, he was quoting 200 per kg and on top of that, he told me he had added 250gms extra as a good will. For 1.3kgs, I was essentially paying the price of 2kgs. I was furious but kept my calm and told him what kind of business is this and indirectly told him why many people prefer online.

When he realized that he was caught, he was scolding his helper saying what kind of job you are doing etc and all that bs and apologized to me many times. I knew he and the helper were both trying to con me from the way they were talking from the beginning.

Important: If the vendors try to speak to you very very nicely, assume that they are trying to scam you. Shop owners who are very strict with pricing (take it or leave it offer) are most of the times genuine and these road side auto walas who sell onions and other fruits/vegetables in bulk are the main people who try to scam.

For onion, I asked him to reset and check again. It was at 8.45kgs instead of 10Kgs 200rs per 10kg). He added more and made it 10.2gs.

Another vendor for mangoes - Instead of 2Kgs, he had put 1780gms and I realized it only after reaching home and checking the weight myself. So I lost around 80rs here.

Irony - The flower guy who is just below my building to whom I call him "anna" everyday, he has been scamming me for a long time. I had bought 1Kgs worth of flowes and he said he had added 250gms extra just because I am a regular and a friend and then when I checked the next day (none was spent so far), it was 922 grams. So I lost around 60rs and god knows how much I have lost over the years.

To compare this, I checked the weight of 4Kgs tomatoes which I had ordered from blinkit yesterday and they had actually added 100gms extra or maybe around 90grams if we exclude the carry bag. I regularly order from blinkit and even though I feel like I pay some extra money to blinkit, I always ordered it mainly for convenience and I think I may order most of the items from them to just get that peace of mind.

To verify the correct weight, I spent close to an hour checking different kitchen weighing machines and finally got a good one for 434 rs and it is doing an amazing job. I ordered it from Amazon now and got it delivered in 7 mins and was super excited to verify it. I am sure I am going to save a lot of money this way in the future.

Simply put - If someone is trying to be very nice to you, be aware. They're going to scam you for sure. If you DO get scammed after checking the actual weight, make a list of that vendor in your notes so that you never visit them again. Try different stores or order online and see how that goes.

Bonus - My phone weighs exactly 218grams as displayed on amazon. So I was not scammed here xD

Pics and videos and the link for the weighing machine for reference in my comments. Feel free to research the weighing scale on your own if you prefer. I just wanted to save 1 hr of time for everyone xD.

Hoping this would help someone. Stay safe.

RD other use cases?

I still have a one year subscription with RD and I am totally fine with less availability of movies/tv shows as I don't watch that many. Other than caching torrents, has anyone else used it for other purposes? Like file sharing, storage etc? Sorry if this is a noob question. Thank you!

Are there still people in this sub earning less than 1L per month?

Late twenties with 7 yoe. I keep seeing posts about people earning 30,40 and 50L+ every time. Are there even people like me earning less than a lakh per month? I make close to 60k post deductions and honestly some of these posts creeps me out sometimes. Curious to know if others are in the same boat as me.

I am not going to pitch anything because there is nothing to pitch yet.

I have been spending a lot of time in this space and keep seeing the same frustrations come up. People spending more than they should, going in circles, not knowing why something did not work the way they expected.

I am putting together some resources and working on a way to make the whole experience smoother and less expensive. The idea is solid but before I go any further, I want to make sure I am solving something people actually care about rather than something I assume they care about.

If you have built anything with Lovable or other AI tools, I would genuinely appreciate two minutes of your time by sharing your honest opinion on this. Completely anonymous, no email needed, no pitch at the end.

If you want to share more or talk about your experience feel free to comment below. Every response helps.

Thanks everyone who takes the time to help me get more clarity on your pain points. Genuinely appreciate it and it will directly shape what gets built.
