Anilist API again down for the 3rd time now this month

I’m not against AniList at all, it’s genuinely one of the best anime tracking/community platforms out there.

But this is now the 3rd API outage this month, and it highlights a bigger issue for 3rd party app developers.

Apps should never rely entirely on a single provider, especially AniList alone.

Developers really need backup sync/support options like

  • SIMKL
  • MAL
  • Kitsu
  • Anime-Planet, etc.

so users aren’t completely locked out whenever AniList’s API goes down.

AniList as a platform is great, but

  • the API ecosystem has remained heavily tied to its GraphQL setup for years
  • and repeated downtime/issues are probably going to happen more often in the future.
  • Redundancy and multi-provider support should honestly become standard practice now.

Is it just me or v2 Beta of SIMKL, feels very futuristic!

I know, I know! There is a bit learning curve needed!

You might need to spend just few minutes, exploring the site.. because its packed with soooooooo many cool stuffs!

But I swear, I havent seen such a site/app before with these many features, filters, sorting, tracking, etc all packaged together in one site!

How is that even possible?

I came back to this site, because they finally added rewatch tracking! Loved it!

Users who paid $60 for Trakt VIP!

Those users, slowly noticing, most of the features are being removed.... like:

  • List collaboration removed
  • Rewatch tracking very simplied
  • Library collection feels removed
  • CSV export & backup removed
  • Limits on watchlists
  • Getting banned on both forum and reddit
  • API Always down
  • Watch History complicated now
  • and many more....

You can only choose one!

Let’s be honest!!!!

Lately, Trakt doesn’t feel like the same platform anymore....

(The original founder seems missing in action, features keep disappearing, and there have been too many API issues, outages, and random errors.) - feels like either it got acquired or v3 ui is very buggy...

Meanwhile, SIMKL... once the underdogm seems to be improving fast with great features, strong anime support, and an active developer/community presence.

Which one do you think is actually better right now, has the more sustainable future for tracking movies, TV shows, and anime?

The only problem right now with SIMKL is, its run by a small team and most of its amazing feature are behind v2 beta..

And SIMKL also does need a bit learning curve to understand the website...

(but I realized that you can also get the Free SIMKL Pro for LIFE, if you visit the site for 20 days)

.

.

And also, why are users still using trakt? is there something, I am unaware of?

How do you track TV Shows, Movies, Anime watchlist?

I’m curious how everyone here keeps track of everything they watch because my watchlist is honestly getting out of control.... lol

Every time I open Netflix, Crunchyroll, Prime Video, or even YouTube, I end up adding more stuff to my “plan to watch” list instead of actually finishing anything lol.

Sometimes I forget what episode I stopped on, sometimes I can’t remember if I already watched a movie, and anime season releases make it even worse....

Right now there is a mix of different apps/sites depending on what I’m watching:

  • SIMKL → probably the easiest for tracking TV shows, movies, and anime together
  • IMDb → mostly for ratings, reviews, and watchlists
  • TV Time → really good for episode tracking and reminders
  • Criticker → underrated but the recommendations are surprisingly accurate
  • MyAnimeList → my main anime tracker
  • MyDramaList → for Kdramas and other Asian dramas

The problem we still face is to keep jumping between apps because no single one feels perfect for everything 😭

So now I’m wondering what everyone else here uses.

Do you keep everything in one app/site or split it up between movies, TV shows, anime, and dramas?

Do you care more about recommendations, ratings, social/community features, stats, or just simple tracking?

Small request to App & Site developers: Please support MAL, AniList, and SIMKL sync

I honestly think this is one of the most important features anime streaming sites/apps can add.

A lot of sites eventually:

  • shut down,
  • stop getting updates,
  • get abandoned,
  • or the developers lose interest over time.

When that happens, users can lose years of watch history, completed anime lists, ratings, progress tracking, and everything they built up over time. Switching to another app becomes super annoying because there’s usually no easy way to export or transfer everything.

If apps supported MAL, AniList, or SIMKL syncing, it would help a lot because:

  • people could easily switch between different apps/sites
  • watch progress stays synced across devices
  • users don’t lose their lists if a platform dies
  • it makes cross-platform watching way easier
  • users feel safer investing time into the app

A lot of people already use multiple apps for streaming, tracking, recommendations, and discovering anime. Sync support would make the whole experience way smoother.

This feature honestly helps both users and developers long term. Users get freedom and backup for their data, and developers make their platform more attractive and trustworthy.

Also, some of these platforms already have public APIs with a lot of useful features developers can use, like:

  • rating data
  • scrobbling & check-ins
  • playback management
  • connected IDs for easier integrations between apps/services
  • watchlist syncing
  • automatic progress tracking
  • recommendations and metadata
  • and a lot more

So it’s not just about syncing a list anymore. These APIs can help build a way better ecosystem between streaming apps, tracking apps, and different devices.

I really hope more streaming sites start treating this like a standard feature instead of an extra thing.

Always have your anime watchlist backed up!

Often a common mistake, that many users make is, using the site's watchlist feature for keeping track of what to watch!

Not many users are aware, but there are sites like MALsync, SIMKL Sync, etc.

That helps you, to keep track of your watchlist & always is backed up! (never lost)

Any Letterboxd for TV Shows?

2-3 years ago, there were several news articles about

  • "Letterboxd plans to bring logging of TV shows to the platform later this year."
  • "Letterboxd announces TV series reviews coming in 2024"
  • "Letterboxd to add TV show ratings later this year"

Dont think it might be coming anytime soon.. Was expecting:

  • Episode & Seasons tracking
  • Rewatching tracking
  • Custom Lists creations for episodes
  • and few more

I am still hoping, it would be added soon!!!

In the mean time, any alternatives, that are Letterboxd For TV Shows, here are few that I found, any thoughts on these:

  • TV Time
  • SIMKL
  • BetaSeries
  • Next Episode
  • Episode Calendar
  • MyDramaList
