Gen Z and the French Quarter

Gen Z is notoriously drinking less alcohol than previous generations. Is this starting to affect tourism to the French Quarter and subsequently is the Quarter starting to see business closures?

Just curious. I’m up in Philly and went to the Jersey Shore this past weekend. Absolutely dead at all bars. 15 years ago The Situation was in those bars punching fat chicks out. Bartenders at several places told me the younger generations just aren’t coming out so there is no late crowd anymore.

Curious if there has been a downturn is arguably the most notorious party/drinking neighborhood in America ….. maybe the world.

What is happening?

This was Hemingways and Seaside Social on a Friday night this past weekend. Probably between the 9pm-11pm time frame.

Is this normal to be so …… vacant?

How long has this been going on?

Place: Tonalli — Dish: Molcajete Caliente

This is from Tonalli in Pennsport. It’s a hot lava bowl filled with meats, veg, shrimp, beans, sauce etc. you make tacos out of it

It’s a little spicy and absolutely amazing. It’s also only like 36 bucks and fed two people with leftovers. BYOB, which is always nice.

It might be one of the best things I’ve eaten in a while.

Don’t sleep on this place.

This might be the wrong sub …..

Is there a business putting on. A rotation of specific ethnic cooking classes? Maybe one week French. Next week Cambodian. Next week Patagonian. Etc etc etc.

Korean Recommendation

I spent 10 months in South Korea (Kunsan City …. Mostly.) I more or less consumed bulgogi everyday. I have gone to several places in the city and have been given different takes on what they say is bulgogi.

What I’m looking for is a spread of small plate kimchis, the white sticky rice, the bulgogi beef/chicken etc, and the lettuce leafs to wrap the former all up in a little package.

This is almost exclusively what I got from various place in Kunsan City.

Anyone have a line on this in our city.

I’d really like to take the misses.

Trillium Summer

This is what Sam Adams Summer Ale tasted like in 2010 way before it turned into the thick syrupy crap it is today.

Serious 2010 era Sam Summer mini keg vibes.

Just canceled Amazon.

Between data centers and rancid treatment of staff, fuck Amazon. I can manage my way to the store for batteries or whatever. We all put pants on for our stuff before this crap company.

I invite you all to ditch Amazon as well.

Dogfish Head

So I’m going to loose allot of folks here considering craft beer is not something everyone is into these days and my reference will go back at least 17 years BUT Dogfish Head is no longer “off centered beer.”

Back when I was first getting into craft beer and going to the Dogfish Head Brewery (was a row home basically) they had truly wild experimental beers. They would make ancient recipes from Egypt, they invented the Randall, etc.

They even made a beer where they chewed the grain and the enzymes in saliva broke the sugars down. Hard pass on that but A for creativity.

I just went down there over 4th of July and the brewery exclusives were run of the mill stouts, pale ales and lager. Nothing inventive or “off centered.”

Shame.

Sport fandom is weird af.

It’s pretty much the only profession where other grown adults will cheer for you while you do your job AND they will spend money to watch you do it.

Can you imagine if we woke up in a world where people were paying money to watch some guy named Frank perform his duties as a welder. They gather at his shop, paid admission and cheered as he fired up the arc. They had heated disputes about Franks ability to weld better than Steve, a rival welding business. They bought merch emblazoned with Franks Welds Are Number One.

It would be insane. Yet, if you just change the job to Football and whoever is the popular football guy; no one bats an eye.

It’s crazy.

Maryland Breweries Worth Stopping At?

I have something going on in Huntington WV here soon. I live in Philly. On the way back from WV we are going to stop at a random MD town to visit a brewery, maybe two if they are in the general district.

We will be coming across 68, entering MD near Friendsville, then popping on 70 around Hancock and then clear into Baltimore. I’d like to not stay in Baltimore since we already go there allot.

Anyone have any brewery recommendations inbetween Freindsville and Baltimore?

Big into West Coast IPA’s, Brett Beers, American Pale Ales. Huge into cask ale. Any notable cask ale joints? Doesn’t even have to be a brewery.

First Roll Attempt. Not Shapely.

Made some Eel Avacado, Tuna Avacado, and Tuna Cream Cheese (because fuck it).

It was much hard than expected. How do I get the perfect tube shape. If I press hard I get this oval shape. If I don’t press it falls apart. If I go inbetween it’s still slightly oval and sometime falls apart.

What am I doing?

Looking for the best Mackerel

I recentlyish had Mackerel sushi. I’m wonder who has a really good mackerel nigiri or sashimi in South Philly. Trying to keep it South Philly since we like to walk.

Looking for just a regular take out place or dine in that is a hyper expensive, and tough to reserve, Omakase experience.

Ginza has historically been my go to for sushi needs however they just don’t serve it.

Recs?
