How do you internally experience music?

I’ve been wondering how other people internally experience music. I realized my own experience seems unique, or at least uncommon, so I’m curious whether anyone relates.

To be clear, I’m not talking about synesthesia. I don’t literally see shapes or colors or anything like that. This feels more like my brain instinctively translates music into physical spaces, movement, entities, and environments.

When I listen to a song, it often becomes a physical world. Songs don’t just sound energetic, calm, heavy, or emotional. They become places, entities, or environments with their own rules.

Sometimes a song feels like a living thing with its own personality, movement, and physical presence. Other times it’s the environment itself. A song might exist inside a certain kind of room, landscape, or structure, and the environment becomes inseparable from the music.

Movement is a huge part of it. I don’t just hear rhythm as the beat. Rhythm includes syncopation, how everything interacts through time, how the melody locks into the rhythm section, how instruments answer each other, how lyrical phrasing resolves, and how the entire song unfolds. My mind seems to translate those things into physical motion: how something moves, collides, vibrates, drifts, accelerates, or occupies space.

Sometimes these worlds are immediate and incredibly vivid, almost as if the song arrives with them already attached. Other times it’s more of a feeling or atmosphere that I have to mentally translate into a visual or physical landscape that best matches what I see the music doing.

Genre doesn’t seem to matter much to me. I gravitate toward certain styles, but songs from completely different genres can inhabit similar worlds if they move through time in a similar way.

I’m curious: Does anyone else experience music this way? Do songs create places, environments, or physical worlds in your mind? Do you experience music as movement, textures, or spaces rather than just emotions? If not, what is your internal experience of listening to music like?

I find it fascinating that we all hear the same sounds, but our minds may be constructing very different internal experiences. I’d love to hear how other people experience music.

I read in Mozart: Reign of Love that Symphonies were often chaotic in the 1700s, with people playing cards, making out, and chatting during them. Are there other accounts of this? If so, at what point did symphonies become stuffy?

In Mozart Reign of Love, Jan Swafford posits that operas and symphonies were a social gathering, often being up to 6 hours long. The music was written such that it was lowkey and allowed people to socialize with occasional big numbers to capture attention.
They mention people would be talking, playing cards, making out and hanging out similar to a modern day bar.
Are there other accounts of this? Is it accurate? Are there any paintings depicting this?

If so, at what point did these shows become like they are today, everyone dressed up, not making a peep.

Did anybody else feel that the quality tanked in Season 6?

Just finished my first watch and was quite disappointed by the last season.

The writing suddenly felt very clunky, people teleporting left and right, the soundtrack was noticeably worse and at some point i simply couldn‘t stand June‘s „intense whisper“ anymore. Overall a real letdown after an incredible series.

Is this an unpopular opinion here or do others experience it the same way?

"All Time Top Songs"-playlist contains songs i've never heard before...

16 songs by some shitty house band named Sammy & Lesen whom i've never streamed, never even heard of before. "Good God" CCM/worship-crap by Herty Bentil, "Yap yap" by Sincerely Collins, "Watch" by Twenty3 TC and "Satellites" by Bright Righteous.

All of this is music i would never listen to deliberately. I've deactivated them in the playlist, but now i'm wondering if my account has been hacked and used by some bots farming plays for those artists? Has this happened to anybody else? Should i contact the Spotify customer service?

Eine Bekannte hat in 1130 diese "Sendung" im Postkastl gehabt. Der Text war bereits markiert. Hat das noch wer bekommen? Weiß wer was zu der Initiative?

How did we ever accept to live like this?

Just one walk through Vienna's inner city and i'm completely fed up with how many huge ass cars spew poisonous gas right in our faces, rape our ears with their noise (idiots honking like absolute dimwits as soon as it's above 20°C add to that) and take up soooo much fucking space.

Where did we as a species go wrong? I don't get it how we allow ourselves to diminish our quality of life so significantly. And don't even get me started on the climate crisis and biodiversity collaps that will inevitably blow everything up in the next couple of decades... we're so goddamn fucked!
