Smart thermostat suggestions with no C wire?

My current thermostat is battery operated. I bought an ecobee but realized that I can’t use it because I have no C wire. I’m renting and the furnace is in the ceiling I can’t access it, so I can’t install an adapter either. Basically back to square one.

I want a smart thermostat but not sure if a battery operated version exists that doesn’t burn through batteries.

Any suggestions on the best way to upgrade?

No furnace access, am I screwed?

I live in an older home. The current thermostat uses 4 wires with no C wire. The furnace is on the roof and unfortunately I have no way to access it. Am I just screwed and can’t use a smart thermostat here? Or is there some sort of workaround?

Guys who went bald and grew it back, what was that experience like?

I’ve had a receding hairline since I was a teen, but my hair was still fairly thick. In recent years, it has been thinning out. I started using minoxidil and that has helped, but I still find myself self conscious about it and wear hats frequently. I am considering shaving it, but afraid to commit to it. I’ve always felt like I’ll have to do it eventually but that when I do it’ll be for good. That’s a lot of pressure.

I’m wondering for anyone who has been in my shoes, shaved it, didn’t like it, and then grew it back, what was that like? How long did it take? How awkward was it while it grew back? Basically what am I in for if I decide to try it out and don’t like it?

Building engagement while working on reactivity

I’ve been working on some foundational stuff with my dog reactive dog. Lots of marker training, redirection, some obedience, and engagement in play. We’ve been working on this every day for about 4-6 weeks and I’m seeing improvements around the house and in the yard (which is adjacent to a busy, loud road that offers regular noise distractions). She gets excited about it and will bug me if we are late for her regularly scheduled play engagement sessions.

I’ve also started taking her out to big box store parking lots once or twice a week to work on engagement in new settings with lower distraction. In these environments, I can get her to take food and do some obedience drills and loose leash walking, but I can’t get her to engage in play. I got like 30 seconds of play out of her last weekend before she stopped to observe the environment again. That’s the best I’ve gotten so far.

My goal is to help redirect that reactive arousal when she sees other dogs to a toy so she can learn a better way to manage that arousal. But I obviously can’t do that until she is willing to engage with a toy in a different setting.

What should I be doing to build that engagement? Is it just a matter of time and reps at home and trying it in a low distraction area outside of the home until she is willing? Are there specific engagement or play games that I should be teaching to help build that drive? Or is there something I’m missing that would help here? I just don’t really know how to move things along and am feeling a little plateaued in my training currently.

How do you build your portfolio when you work with confidential data?

I’ve never created a portfolio before but anticipate entering the job market again and am considering it. I’ve done a lot of work in SQL and PowerBI in my current role, but all of the data I work on is regulated and confidential. It’s also complex and the idea of recreating these procedures and dashboards using a public approximation of data sounds time consuming and I’m not confident in the value add.

So I guess my question is, how are you all doing it? Is it worth the time and effort? Are you rebuilding from scratch, or how are you getting it from your work environment to an accessible environment post-leave?

Opinions on financing options for franchise opportunities

I’m looking into a few franchising opportunities and looking at financing. I don’t have the cash in full for any of them, so I’d either need to take out a loan to cover part of the startup costs, or dip into my retirement accounts. As I understand, my options are SBA loans, personal business loans, or ROBS program.

I don’t have any entrepreneurs in my life that I can ask, so I’m looking for opinions on the pros and cons of these funding options for franchising opportunities. Are any better than others? Are any considered terrible ideas? Any other insight you can share on funding I’d appreciate.

Turbo smart 50/50 BOV without tune?

Considering picking up a bov and looking at the Turbosmart 50/50. I am not tuned yet. Do I need a tune to run an aftermarket BOV like this or will I be fine until I add additional mods?

What resources did you find most helpful in your learning?

I’m working through reactivity with one of my dogs and it is a roller coaster. Sometimes I feel like she’s doing great and then others I feel frustrated or confused. I have a high level view of the blueprint I’m trying to follow, but sometimes find myself questioning whether I’m making progress.

There is so much conflicting info out there about reactivity. What did you find most helpful as you were learning how to fix reactivity or working through it with your dogs?

Replacing negative battery terminal

Replacing the old battery and the negative terminal is corroded to hell. No way I get this thing fully clean. Anyone ever replaced the terminal? Not sure if I need a particular terminal because of the BMS sensor or if I can just throw a generic one in there.

Renting with evidence of termites

We are renting a townhouse in Southern California. New to the state in the last year, never dealt with termites before. I found a couple of swarmers in the house last fall and reported it but the property management just said to keep an eye out.

Nothing since then until yesterday when we noticed frass falling from the ceiling and collecting on the couch directly below. I’ve reported to property management and they suggested submitting a maintenance request about it, but I am wondering if there is any risk to us or pets from the environment? I’m going to submit the request, but just curious whether I need to worry about anything as a renter aside from just doing my part to report?

Also am I able to just like fill that kick out hole to prevent the frass from falling on the couch or what can be done about that? Anything?

What battery are you running?

Had the car 5 years now and don’t know how old the battery actually is, but I’m starting to get corrosion on the negative terminal and went out to a dead battery today. Charged it up and drove around fine but thinking I need to replace it.

What brand/size battery are you all running now? Are the odyssey batteries actually worth the extra money, or should I just strap a duralast in and call it a day? I live in SoCal so I don’t need to worry about the winter or anything. Just need something I don’t have to think about.

Best way to manage underwater auto loan?

I am trying to help a family member figure out how to manage their underwater auto loan. They don’t want to get rid of the car, but their loan is a high interest rate on a sum larger than the car is valued (bad credit when they bought it plus some rollover when they were forced to sell their last car due to divorce). The goal is to reduce interest rate and get it paid off as quickly and reasonably as possible.

I don’t think they can get an auto loan for the full amount. They’re looking at personal loans and quoted 9% for $32,500 from SoFi. I’m trying to evaluate if that’s a good option.

Would they be able to reduce their effective interest rate by getting an auto loan for the car’s current value and then a personal loan to cover the gap? Or would it make more sense to just do a big personal loan with an auto loan length term? Are there any downsides to splitting the loans?

What is the best course to learn foundations of training?

I am a hobbyist trainer interested in transitioning my career to professional dog training eventually. I’ve read books, watched many hours of YouTube, browsed this subreddit, etc in my learning journey. I’ve been working with my own dog on obedience and reactivity and have seen some improvements But I still feel fragmented in my learning. Nothing is very clear about progression or covers all of the bases. I don’t know what I don’t know and I want to find someone to teach me how to do this stuff.

I can’t enroll in person classes or go to a dog training school, so I’ve turned to courses. I’m looking for a course that will teach me the things I would need to know to become a professional - a clear breakdown of training best practices, how to be a better trainer, the order of operations getting a dog to be well trained and well behaved, etc.

The ones I’m looking at are Dog Training Decoded by Michael Ellis and The Cornerstone Collection by TWC. The TWC course is much more expensive and a lot harder to understand what value it brings, but I’ve seen lots of suggestions for it.

Has anyone used these courses? Are they valuable for what I’m trying to learn? Are there better alternatives aside from a training school or being hired to learn full time under a trainer, neither of which are an option for me?

What is the best online course to teach me the foundation of good dog training?

I am a hobbyist trainer interested in transitioning my career to dog training eventually. I’ve read books, watched many hours of YouTube, browsed this subreddit, etc in my learning journey. I’ve been working with my own dog on obedience and reactivity and have seen some improvements, both in my training and hers. But I still feel fragmented. Nothing is very clear about progression. Nothing really covers all of the bases. I’m frequently caught in an “I don’t know what I don’t know” trap and I just want to find someone to teach me how to do this stuff.

I don’t really have the opportunity to do in person classes or go to a dog training school or something, so I’ve turned to courses. I’m mainly just looking for a clear breakdown of training best practices, how to be a better trainer, and the order of operations getting a dog to be well trained and well behaved. I’m not necessarily looking for sport direction, but more so to understand how to teach a dog properly.

I’ve identified a couple, but I’m not sure if either is right.

Just paid off my ST. What mods do I buy first?

Just paid off the car and told myself I’d wait to do any mods til then. It’s my DD, a 2016 ST with ~56k. Good condition with no issues that I am aware of. The car is currently bone stock. I have bought a short throw adapter and the shifter bushings for both sides of the linkage, but haven’t installed yet.

What do I buy first? Don’t want to go crazy, just want to have a little more fun with it. Was thinking a BOV of some sort to start, but it seems like an AP and a tune are the usual first suggestions? Where would you start if you were in my shoes wanting to just slowly start having more fun with the car while keeping it daily drivable?

Training Frequency

I’m learning to train my own dogs on some obedience and some behavioral issues. How frequently should I be working with them? I see board and trainers doing full behavioral overhauls in 6-8 weeks and that seems absolutely impossible. Obviously I’m not a professional and it will take me more time, but how much should I realistically be working with my dogs to achieve training goals? And a follow up question: how long should I be training with them each session?
